We report the first case of eosinophilic pleural effusion due to Anisakis spp. infection in a 39-years-old European subject hospitalized for worsening dyspnoea and abdominal and thoracic pain. Lung CT scan showed bilateral pleural effusion; thoracentesis revealed significant eosinophilia (45%), with normal eosinophils in the blood. Microbiological tests on pleural effusion were negative for bacteria, SARS-CoV-2, tuberculosis, fungi and parasites. The patient used to eat raw fish; Western blot was positive for Anisakis spp. in blood and pleural effusion. In the era of globalization, unusual par

Although originally performed on patients with refractory tuberculosis and malignant pleural mesothelioma, extrapleural pneumonectomy may be used to treat patients with pleural dissemination of other malignancies, including thymoma and NSCLC. Patients who present with stage IV NSCLC caused by malignant pleural effusion may be considered for EPP following induction chemotherapy if they demonstrate no mediastinal nodal or distant metastases and have adequate cardiopulmonary reserve. EPP for NSCLC should be performed by experienced teams at experienced centers to minimize the morbidity and mortal

An endemic outbreak of melioidosis developed in southern Taiwan following a flood caused by a typhoon in July 2005. A total of 27 patients were diagnosed with the acute and indigenous form of pulmonary melioidosis. Parapneumonic pleural effusions were noted on chest X-rays in six patients. Thoracentesis was done in three patients and all revealed lymphocyte predominance in differential cell count. Burkholderia pseudomallei was isolated in the pleural effusion in one of them. All three patients survived after antibiotic treatment. Lymphocytic pleural effusion is generally seen in tuberculosis o

A 35-year-old woman who had been suffering from ascites more than 3 months after the delivery of her first baby, developed generalized edema, pyrexia, pleural effusion, and right lower abdominal pain. The laboratory data revealed 5.6 g of 24-hour urinary protein, increased ESR and CRP, a positive skin test for tuberculosis, and a positive culture fortuberculous bacilli from pleural effusion. A renal biopsy showed mild proliferative glomerulonephritis, IgA and C3 depositions along the capillary loop, in the mesangium and also in the focal tubular basement membrane, and scattered membranolysis o

A 74-year-old man developed with left pleural effusion and was suspected of benign asbestos pleural effusion and tuberculous pleurisy. Because of elevation of ADA level in the pleural effusion, diagnostic treatment for tuberculous pleurisy by anti-tuberculosis drugs was performed. However, right pleural effusion, cutaneous/mucosal lesions, leukocytopenia, and fever elevation occurred. The pathology of skin biopsy was consistent with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Since clinical findings did not improve even after discontinuation of all drugs, he received steroid therapy was started and cl

Pleuritis is a common initial clinical manifestation of tuberculosis. It is associated with an accumulation of a variety of cytokines in the pleura and pleural fluid. We have recently shown that these proinflammatory cytokines induce the pleural mesothelial cell to produce large amounts of nitric oxide, a nitrogen intermediate that has been shown to have a tuberculocidal effect. TGF-beta has also been found in situ in tuberculous effusions and pleural tissues and is thought to suppress the immune response and promote tissue repair. This study examined the effects of TGF-beta on cytokine-induce

The incidence of new cases of extrapulmonary tuberculosis has remained constant, despite the decline in new cases of active pulmonary tuberculosis. This might be due to a delay in recognition, and particularly a lack of consideration of tuberculosis when the presenting symptoms are other than respiratory. Extrapulmonary tuberculosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of bone, joint, genitourinary tract and central nervous system (CNS) diseases. To determine factors that might delay recognition and identification, 62 patients having extrapulmonary tuberculosis during 1969-1972 a

Before discussing the epidemiology of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) and particularly urogenital tuberculosis (UGTB), unification of the terminology is necessary. The term 'urogenital tuberculosis' is preferable to 'genitourinary tuberculosis', as renal and urinary tract tuberculosis is more common than genital tuberculosis. Some understand the term 'extrapulmonary tuberculosis' as a specific tuberculosis (TB) lesion of all organs excluding the bronchus, lungs, pleura and intrathoracic bronchopulmonary lymph nodes, but others consider pleural TB as one form of EPTB - and it is a reason for

Th1 cell-mediated adaptive immune response is very important but may not be sufficient to control Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) infection. The roles of the various T cell subsets and cytokines in the inflammatory processes are not clearly elucidated. We investigated whether Th1, Th22 and Th17 cells mediated cellular immunity at the local site of M. tuberculosis infection in patients with tuberculous pleurisy (TBP). The results showed that the cytokines IFN-γ and IL-22 but not IL-17 were elevated in tubercular pleural fluid. Following stimulation with immune-dominant peptides of

Patients with pulmonary tuberculosis develop pleural effusions with a high protein content. Pleural mesothelial adherens junctions promote mesothelial cell-cell adhesion and contribute to pleural integrity. In the present study we have investigated the effect of mycobacterium (BCG) on mesothelial cell adherens junction proteins and pleural permeability. BCG enhanced pleural mesothelial cell (PMC) release of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and decreased electrical resistance across the PMC monolayer. Neutralizing antibodies to VEGF significantly restored the drop in PMC electrical re

Open parietal pleural biopsy was made in 223 patients with pleurisy. The biopsy specimens were histologically and microbiologically studied (Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MT) being found). The etiology of pleurisy was established to be tuberculous in 118 patients, nonspecific in 96, cancerous in 9. The detection rate of MT in the biopsy specimens with histological evidence for tuberculosis was no more than 53.8%.

Epidemiological studies identified the relationship between air pollution and pulmonary tuberculosis. Effects of lung-deposited dose of particulate matter (PM) on culture-positive pulmonary tuberculosis remain unclear. This study investigates the association between lung-deposited dose of PM and pulmonary tuberculosis pleurisy. A case-control study of subjects undergoing pleural effusion drainage of pulmonary tuberculosis (case) and chronic heart failure (control) was conducted. Metals and biomarkers were quantified in the pleural effusion. The air pollution exposure was measured and PM deposi

INTRODUCTION: Due to its rarity and severity, tuberculous polyseritis is a diagnostic challenge that can lead to serious complications. Portal vein thrombosis is an uncommon complication that is often overlooked. This case report illustrates this association in an immunocompetent patient.
OBSERVATION: A 31-year-old male gold miner with a history of tuberculosis infection was admitted with dyspnea, chest pain, a productive cough, and signs of tuberculosis impregnation that had developed over the course of two months. Physical examination revealed massive left pleurisy, moderate ascites, and pe

INTRODUCTION: this work aims to bring out the epidemiological characteristics of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) in the province of Larache (Morocco) and to investigate the effect of gender and age on its localization and treatment outcome.
METHODS: it consists in a retrospective study based on 2962 cases of EPTB, reported during the period 2000 to 2012.
RESULTS: the mean age was 31.74 ± 18.83 years, with a median age of 26. Males are more affected by this form of tuberculosis, with a male to female sex-ratio of 1,15. The EPTB affects particularly the young population whose age is between

Tl-201 lung uptake in 74 patients (85 lesions) and pulmonary perfusion in 105 patients were studied to evaluate clinical usefulness of Tl-201 lung uptake and perfusion lung scintigraphy in pulmonary tuberculosis, using a scintillation camera with a mini-computer system. As indices of Tl-201 lung uptake, lung (lesion) to upper mediastinum uptake ratio (L/M) and visual grading were used. L/M in pulmonary tuberculosis was 1.96 +/- 0.66, which was significantly larger than 1.04 +/- 0.24 in healthy controls and lower than that in heart diseases with left heart failure and idiopathic interstitial pn

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB), a multisystemic disease with protean presentation, remains a major global health problem. Although concurrent pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) cases are commonly observed clinically, knowledge regarding concurrent PTB-EPTB is limited. Here, a large-scale multicenter observational study conducted in China aimed to study the epidemiology of concurrent PTB-EPTB cases by diagnostically defining TB types and then implementing association rules analysis.
METHODS: The retrospective study was conducted at 21 hospitals in 15 provinces i
