Neuropsychological analyses of comorbidity between reading disability and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: in search of the common deficit.

Measures of component reading and language skills, executive functions, and processing speed were administered to groups of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; n = 113), reading disability (RD; n = 109), both RD and ADHD (n = 64), and neither RD nor ADHD (n = 151). Groups with RD exhibited pronounced deficits on all measures of component reading and language skills, as well as significant weaknesses on measures of verbal working memory, processing speed, and response inhibition. Groups with ADHD exhibited weaknesses on all response-inhibition and processing speed task

Childhood exposure to polybrominated diphenyl ethers and neurodevelopment at six years of age.

Mixtures of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are present in indoor environments. Studies of the developmental effects of exposure to these chemicals in large prospective mother-child cohorts are required, with data on prenatal exposure and long-term follow-up of the children. We aimed to investigate the relationship between prenatal and childhood exposure to PBDEs and neurodevelopment at the age of six years. We determined the levels of PBDEs and other neurotoxicants in cord blood and dust collected from the homes of children for 246 families included in the PELAGIE mother-child cohort i

Neurocognitive impairment in obstructive sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a common disorder with far-reaching health implications. One of the major consequences of OSAS is an impact on neurocognitive functioning. Several studies have shown that OSAS has an adverse effect on inductive and deductive reasoning, attention, vigilance, learning, and memory. Neurocognitive impairment can be measured objectively with tests such as the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised, the Psychomotor Vigilance Task, the Steer Clear Performance Test, and tests of repetitive finger tapping. In children, OSAS may cause attention-deficit hyper

Executive function abnormalities in pathological gamblers.

BACKGROUND: Pathological gambling (PG) is an impulse control disorder characterized by persistent and maladaptive gambling behaviors with disruptive consequences for familial, occupational and social functions. The pathophysiology of PG is still unclear, but it is hypothesized that it might include environmental factors coupled with a genetic vulnerability and dysfunctions of different neurotransmitters and selected brain areas. Our study aimed to evaluate a group of patients suffering from PG by means of some neuropsychological tests in order to explore the brain areas related to the disorder

Sex-Specific Associations between Maternal Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies and Cognitive Development in Preschool Children: A Prospective Cohort Study.

Background: An association between maternal thyroid dysfunction throughout pregnancy and the subsequent risk of neurodevelopmental abnormalities in offspring has been demonstrated. However, the potential effects of maternal thyroid autoimmunity on neurodevelopment in the absence of maternal hypothyroidism remain unclear. Therefore, in this study, we explored the association between maternal thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) positivity and cognitive development in preschool children. Methods: A total of 1849 mother-child pairs were recruited from the Ma'anshan Birth Cohort (MABC) Study. Durin

Eye-tracking working memory intervention in young people with severe dyskinetic cerebral palsy: a pilot study.

Working memory (WM) is fundamental to learning, reasoning and everyday functioning and is frequently impaired in cerebral palsy (CP). In severe dyskinetic CP, profound motor and speech impairments limit access to reliable cognitive assessment and intervention. Eye-tracking technology may provide an accessible interface for computerised cognitive training. This study examined the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of adaptive eye-tracking WM training in four young people with severe dyskinetic CP (14-20 years; all female). Participants completed a 5-week intensive Cogmed training (five sessio

Cognitive profile in BECTS treated with levetiracetam: A 2-year follow-up.

INTRODUCTION: Benign epilepsy with centrotemporal spikes (BECTS) is a common epileptic syndrome in childhood, characterized by brief and infrequent partial motor seizures, with or without generalization and mostly recurring during sleep. Because of its favorable efficacy, tolerability, and safety profile, levetiracetam (LEV) monotherapy is often administered in these patients. Long-term effects of LEV therapy and its influence on cognitive functions remain controversial. PURPOSE: This evaluated the changes in the cognitive profile of children with BECTS treated with LEV monotherapy for 2 year

Association between descending pain modulatory system and cognitive impairment in fibromyalgia: A cross-sectional exploratory study.

BACKGROUND: The successful regulation of sensory input to the central nervous system depends on the descending pain modulatory system (DPMS). For the effective regulation of sensory input to the central nervous system and behavioral responses to pain, the DPMS is required. Its connection to fibromyalgia (FM)-related cognitive dysfunction has not yet been investigated. Therefore, this study tested whether measures of verbal fluency, sustained attention, and short-term and working memory could distinguish FM patients from healthy controls (HC). Additionally, it investigated, using a standardized
