Disseminated Rosette-Forming Glioneuronal Tumor with Spinal Drop Metastasis, a Uniquely Aggressive Presentation of Rare Tumor.

BACKGROUND: The rosette-forming glioneuronal tumor (RGNT) is a rare World Health Organization grade I tumor, most often originating in the fourth ventricle and characterized by a predominant glial component, as well as a neurocytic component. Despite its benign grading, there are a few documented cases of RGNT displaying more aggressive behavior with malignant characteristics. CASE DESCRIPTION: Herein, we describe a uniquely aggressive presentation of RGNT in a 49-year-old man initially presenting with obstructive hydrocephalus with lesions in the right frontal lobe, fourth ventricle, and lef…

Straight sinus dural arteriovenous fistula presenting with reversible parkinsonism: A case report and literature review.

RATIONALE: A dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) refers to an abnormal direct connection between an intracranial artery and a dural venous sinus. A DAVF presenting with parkinsonism is rare, and is therefore easily misdiagnosed. Therefore, early consideration of DAVF in the differential diagnosis of reversible parkinsonism is necessary. PATIENT CONCERNS: We present the case of a 51-year-old male with progressive parkinsonism. DIAGNOSES: He was diagnosed as straight sinus occlusion. Imaging studies revealed a DAVF associated with cerebral hypoperfusion of the lenticular nuclei and frontal lobe…

Neuropathologic correlates of regional brain volumes in a community cohort of older adults.

The objective of this work was 2-fold: to generate macrostructural brain signatures of age-related neuropathologies in a community cohort of older adults and to determine the contribution of brain macrostructure to the variation in antemortem cognition after accounting for the contributions of neuropathologies and demographics. Cerebral hemispheres from 165 participants of 2 cohort studies of aging were imaged with magnetic resonance imaging ex vivo (mean age at death = 90 years; standard deviation = 6 years). The volumes of white matter and 42 gray matter regions were measured. The same hemis

Interplay Between Conceptual Expectations and Movement Predictions Underlies Action Understanding.

Recent accounts of understanding goal-directed action underline the importance of a hierarchical predictive architecture. However, the neural implementation of such an architecture remains elusive. In the present study, we used functional neuroimaging to quantify brain activity associated with predicting physical movements, as they were modulated by conceptual-expectations regarding the purpose of the object involved in the action. Participants observed object-related actions preceded by a cue that generated both conceptual goal expectations and movement goal predictions. In 2 tasks, observers

The role of the right inferior frontal gyrus in the pathogenesis of post-stroke psychosis.

Psychotic symptoms have previously been reported following right hemisphere brain injury. We sought to identify the specific neuroanatomical … nical evidence from patients with structural brain lesions implicating damage to the right inferior frontal lobe in the generation of persistent psychosis following stroke. We suggest that preexisting psychiatric disease provided a behavioural susceptibility to develop delusions in these individuals.

This series of meta-analyses examined structural abnormalities of the hippocampus and other brain regions in persons with PTSD compared to t … a-exposed controls. Pediatric samples with PTSD exhibited significantly smaller corpus callosum and frontal lobe volumes compared to controls, but there were no group differences in hippocampal volume. The overall findings suggested a dimensional, developmental psychopathology systems model in which: (1) hippocampal volumetric differences covary with PTSD seve …

Familial frontotemporal dementia with ubiquitin inclusion bodies and without motor neuron disease.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is the second most common degenerative dementia after Alzheimer's disease and its Lewy body variant. Clinical pathology can be subdivided in three main neuropathological subtypes: frontal lobe dementia, Pick's disease and FTD with motor neuron disease (MND), all characterised by distinct histological features. Until recently the presence of ubiquitin-positive intraneuronal inclusions in the dentate gyrus, and the temporal and frontal cortex was usually associated with the MND type. Such inclusions were also observed in a few sporadic cases of FTD without or with p…

[Idiopathic dural arteriovenous fistula of the superior sagittal sinus associated with intracerebral hemorrhage: a case report].

A case was reported of a surgically removed idiopathic dural arteriovenous fistula of the superior sagittal sinus associated with intracerebral hemorrhage. Dural arteriovenous fistula of the superior sagittal sinus is said to be rare. Only 9 cases have been reported in detail so far. A 46-year-old male was referred to our clinic complaining of left motor weakness of sudden onset. He had no history of head injury. CT scan revealed subcortical hemorrhage in the right frontal lobe. enhanced CT scan showed string-like enhancement in the margin of the hemorrhage. Right internal carotid angiogram di…

Global and Parallel Cortical Processing Based on Auditory Gamma Oscillatory Responses in Humans.

Gamma oscillations are physiological phenomena that reflect perception and cognition, and involve parvalbumin-positive γ-aminobutyric acid-ergic interneuron function. The auditory steady-state response (ASSR) is the most robust index for gamma oscillations, and it is impaired in patients with neuropsychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and autism. Although ASSR reduction is known to vary in terms of frequency and time, the neural mechanisms are poorly understood. We obtained high-density electrocorticography recordings from a wide area of the cortex in 8 patients with refractory epilepsy.

A Heteromodal Word-Meaning Binding Site in the Visual Word Form Area under Top-Down Frontoparietal Control.

The integral capacity of human language together with semantic memory drives the linkage of words and their meaning, which theoretically is subject to cognitive control. However, it remains unknown whether, across different language modalities and input/output formats, there is a shared system in the human brain for word-meaning binding and how this system interacts with cognitive control. Here, we conducted a functional magnetic resonance imaging experiment based on a large cohort of subjects (50 females, 50 males) to comprehensively measure the brain responses evoked by semantic processing i

Dissociation between frontal and temporal-parietal contributions to connected speech in acute stroke.

Humans are uniquely able to retrieve and combine words into syntactic structure to produce connected speech. Previous identification of focal brain regions necessary for production focused primarily on associations with the content produced by speakers with chronic stroke, where function may have shifted to other regions after reorganization occurred. Here, we relate patterns of brain damage with deficits to the content and structure of spontaneous connected speech in 52 speakers during the acute stage of a left hemisphere stroke. Multivariate lesion behaviour mapping demonstrated that damage

Phonological ambiguity modulates resolution of semantic ambiguity during reading: An fMRI study of Hebrew.

OBJECTIVES: The current fMRI study examined the role of phonology in the extraction of meaning from print in each hemisphere by comparing homophonic and heterophonic homographs (ambiguous words in which both meanings have the same or different sounds respectively, e.g., bank or tear). The analysis distinguished between the first phase, in which participants read ambiguous words without context, and the second phase in which the context resolves the ambiguity. METHOD: Native Hebrew readers were scanned during semantic relatedness judgments on pairs of words in which the first word was either a

Shared neural processes support semantic control and action understanding.

Executive-semantic control and action understanding appear to recruit overlapping brain regions but existing evidence from neuroimaging meta-analyses and neuropsychology lacks spatial precision; we therefore manipulated difficulty and feature type (visual vs. action) in a single fMRI study. Harder judgements recruited an executive-semantic network encompassing medial and inferior frontal regions (including LIFG) and posterior temporal cortex (including pMTG). These regions partially overlapped with brain areas involved in action but not visual judgements. In LIFG, the peak responses to action

Decreased insular connectivity in drug-naive major depressive disorder at rest.

BACKGROUND: The insula has extensive links to the fronto-limbic circuit and associated regions, which is involved in the neurobiology of major depressive disorder (MDD). However, few studies are designed to examine the insular connectivity in MDD. This study was performed to examine the insular connectivity in drug-naive MDD directly by using the insular cortices as seeds. METHODS: Functional magnetic resonance imaging data were obtained from 44 drug-naive MDD patients and 44 healthy controls at rest. The functional connectivity (FC) method was used to analyze the images. RESULTS: Significan
