Diagnostic Performance of CT-like Images for Lumbar Pedicle Screw Planning and Spinal Canal Area Measurement: A Comparative Study with Conventional CT and MRI.

Background: Although magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides excellent soft-tissue contrast for most spinal evaluations, computed tomography (CT) is still always required for preoperative planning to assess osseous anatomy and determine surgical device size, increasing the radiation exposure and workflow complexity. CT-like images enable visualization of precise bone morphology without ionizing radiation. In addition, these images often provide CT myelography-like contrasts, allowing the simultaneous depiction of the spinal canal area (SCA). This study aimed to evaluate whether CT-like image

Biologically adaptive radiation oncology in oligometastatic and oligoprogressive disease: MR- and CBCT-guided adaptation, molecular imaging, dose painting, biomarkers, and AI.

Oligometastatic disease (OMD) and oligoprogression are clinically actionable states in which local treatment of limited tumour burden can prolong disease control for selected patients. Randomised phase II trials support metastasis-directed therapy (MDT), usually stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT/SABR), in several settings, but the effect is not uniform across tumour types. SABR-COMET and two non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) trials showed progression-free or overall-survival gains, whereas NRG-BR002 did not improve progression-free or overall survival in newly oligometastatic breast cancer

Biomechanical Characterization of Porcine Lower Limb Arteries for Preclinical Evaluation of Peripheral Vascular Devices.

PURPOSE: Peripheral artery disease (PAD) predominantly affects the lower extremities, where complex biomechanical deformations during limb flexion contribute to disease progression and treatment failure. While human and cadaver studies have characterized these deformations, preclinical device testing requires large-animal models that replicate human arterial anatomy and biomechanics. Swine are commonly used, yet their biomechanical comparability to humans remains poorly defined. METHODS: We performed a detailed morphometric and biomechanical analysis of the external iliac (EIA), superficial f

Inter-software variability in CT organ-dose calculation under identical scan conditions: implications for users and dose evaluation in the Japanese population.

Organ dose calculation software offers a convenient way to estimate organ and effective doses in computed tomography (CT) for radiation risk assessment. However, even under identical scan conditions the estimates differ among software packages, and users must understand these differences when applying the results. We quantified the magnitude and causes of inter-software differences and evaluated typical doses for the Japanese population. Three packages-NCICT, WAZA-ARI v2, and VirtualDose CT-were compared under identical conditions (120 kV, 1 s rotation, pitch 1, no tube current modulation) for

Multiscale Modeling of a Geometrically Tunable Shunt for Growing Pediatric Patients With Single Ventricle Physiology.

BACKGROUND: Univentricular circulations are initially established with the placement of a fixed-diameter blood shunt to facilitate physiologic stability during growth. This fixed-diameter shunt (FDS) is geometrically static in a dynamically growth-driven environment. The neonatal cardiovascular hemodynamics are sensitive to the presence of the FDS and its fluidic and resistive properties, which creates significant interdependency and mortality risks. Thus, we have developed a geometrically tunable shunt to mitigate these hemodynamic challenges. Here, the tunable shunt is established by computa

Robotic-Assisted versus Manual Diagnostic Cerebral Angiography: Comparative Outcomes and Learning Curve in a Large Single-Institution Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Diagnostic cerebral angiography (DCA) exposes neurointerventionalists to substantial occupational radiation. Robotic-assisted cerebral angiography (RCA) offers operator-dose reduction and a foundation for telerobotic stroke care, but comparisons to manual DCA have only been evaluated in smaller feasibility cohorts. METHODS: We performed a single-institution retrospective cohort study between September 2021 and May 2023, comparing 214 procedures using the CorPath GRX system against 636 manual DCA controls. Primary outcomes were procedural efficiency (room, procedure, and fluoroscop

Correlation between Posterior Tibial Slope and Functional Outcome in Postoperative Anterior Cruciate Ligament Patients.

BACKGROUND: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries cause significant functional impairment, and while surgical reconstruction is the standard of care, outcomes vary. The osseous anatomy of the knee, specifically the posterior tibial slope (PTS), is a key factor influencing knee biomechanics and graft strain. AIM: To evaluate the correlation between PTS and functional outcomes in patients following arthroscopic ACL reconstruction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This tertiary center-based prospective observational study included 54 patients (mean age - 27.54 ± 6.66 years) aged 18-50 years with conf

Integrated physiological, photochemical and anatomical responses reveal divergent drought-response strategies among herbaceous peony cultivars.

Drought responses involve coordination across organs and functional levels, yet integrated cultivar strategies remain poorly resolved in herbaceous peony. Five cultivars, 'Fen Guan' (FG), 'Jing Wang Fen' (JWF), 'San Dian Hong' (SDH), 'Cai Xia' (CX) and 'Xiao Ou' (XO), were exposed for 30 d to nominal target regimes of 65% (CK), 45% (mild drought, LD), 25% (moderate drought, MD) and 5% (severe drought, SD) of substrate maximum water-holding capacity. We quantified leaf water and functional traits, pigment and membrane status, antioxidant enzymes and osmolytes, chlorophyll fluorescence, and leaf

Sex disparities in coronary angiography findings of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest complicating acute coronary syndromes.

OBJECTIVES: Sex-based disparities have been widely reported in the management and outcomes of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), often complicating acute coronary syndromes (ACS). While previous studies have demonstrated that female patients are less likely to undergo invasive coronary angiography (ICA) or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), little is known about potential differences in coronary anatomy or PCI strategies in this context. The authors sought to evaluate sex-related differences in ICA findings and PCI management among OHCA survivors with angiographically confirmed ACS.

A prospective comparative study of different nephrolithometric scoring system for nephrolithiasis to predict stone free status and complications in supine PCNL.

The significant rise in stone disease has led to an increased popularity of percutaneous nephrolithotomy for the management of substantial stone burdens. Despite ongoing advancements in technology and surgical methods, overall complication rates of PCNL have gone up. For the best decision-making and well-informed patient counselling, a precise assessment of treatment success is essential. CT scans offer high-resolution spatial imaging that precisely characterizes stone size and distribution, pelvicaliceal anatomy, anomalies, and anatomical relationships. With these measurable stone and patient

End-tidal CO2 changes during short breath-hold maneuvers: Variability, paradigm effects, and spirometric correlates.

Breath-hold functional MRI (bh-fMRI) is a widely used method for mapping cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR). Normalization of BOLD signal changes to end-tidal CO₂ changes (ΔpetCO₂) is suggested to improve between-subject comparability. The aim was to characterize magnitude and variability of ΔpetCO₂ during short breath-hold maneuvers. Twenty healthy volunteers participated in this study. Ten of these participants performed five breathing paradigms: baseline breathing, and end-expiratory breath-holds of 6, 9, and 12 s, as well as a deep breathing maneuver, each repeated seven times. petCO₂ was re

Value of contrast-enhanced colosonography in the assessment of anorectal malformations.

BACKGROUND: Anorectal malformations are common congenital anomalies. Accurate preoperative imaging of fistulous connections is crucial for surgical planning. Traditional imaging uses ionizing radiation and often requires sedation. Contrast-enhanced colosonography, based on the application of ultrasound contrast agents, has been developed to overcome these limitations while still providing high-resolution structural information for the evaluation of anorectal malformations. The indications of laparoscopically assisted anorectoplasty for recto-bulbar urethral fistulas remain debated. OBJECTIVES

Clinical efficacy of manual reverse closed reduction and robot-assisted cannulated screw fixation for valgus-impacted osteoporotic femoral neck fractures in the elderly: a retrospective cohort study.

Achieving anatomical restoration in valgus-impacted femoral neck fractures remains a clinical challenge, particularly in the elderly. This retrospective study evaluated a "dual-optimization" strategy-integrating manual reverse closed reduction with robotic-assisted internal fixation-compared to conventional in-situ freehand fixation. Seventy-two patients were divided into the reduction-assisted (RA, n = 36) and in-situ freehand (IF, n = 36) groups. While the RA group required longer operative times (1.74 ± 0.63 h vs. 1.29 ± 0.37 h, p < 0.05), it demonstrated superior technical precision with s

Handheld three-dimensional scanning in medical education: Feasibility of student-generated donor-based digital 3D models.

This descriptive feasibility study examined whether medical students could generate anatomically coherent digital three-dimensional (3D) models from donor dissections using a handheld surface scanner. Two second-year medical students used an Artec Space Spider scanner to generate digital 3D models of four anatomical structure groups: heart, brachial plexus, spinal cord, and celiac trunk. Anatomical accuracy was defined as the presence of expected curricular structures and quantified using structure-presence scores (proportion of expected curricular structures identifiable in each model). Comparison of urodynamic outcomes by hysterectomy technique: A cross-sectional study.

Although hysterectomy significantly alters pelvic anatomy, its long-term effects on bladder function, pelvic floor integrity, and urethral sphincter activity remain controversial. Previous studies have reported inconsistent findings, often limited by surgical variability, heterogeneous study populations, and differing definitions of detrusor hypocontractility. This study aimed to determine whether urodynamic results-specifically, detrusor contractility, urethral sphincter function, and pelvic floor function-differ according to hysterectomy technique. We conducted a retrospective, single-center
