Electrophysiologic effects of 50 mg iv ajmaline were evaluated in 10 patients with atrioventricular nodal reentrant paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT) utilizing the slow pathway for antegrade and the fast pathway for retrograde conduction. Ajmaline terminated the PSVT in all 10 patients in 17 to 165 sec (mean 94 +/- 49 sec): by ventriculoatrial block in eight, AH block in one, and intra-atrial reentry in one patient. At post-mortem examination the lungs of 30 intravenous narcotic addicts were compared to two groups of 30 age- and sex-matched controls with no history of narcotic abuse. High doses of intravenous immune globulin produced meaningful clinical responses in three patients with altered immune function. One patient had a history of repeated infection with gram-positive pneumococci, another patient had second-degree burns and previously undiagnosed chronic leukemia of unknown etiology, and the third patient had frequent infections of the intestinal tract with symptoms of malabsorption and gluten intolerance. In 11 healthy volunteers the kinetics of theophylline and the plasma levels and the urinary excretion of its metabolites were studied before and after treatment with erythromycin for 10 days. The bioavailability of oxytetracycline (OTC) and chlortetracycline (CTC) was studied in non-fasting calves. The availability of OTC was found to be 5% and of CTC 37% after oral administration of 10 mg/kg. The availability was reduced when the drugs were given in a milk replacer or in cow's milk. Standard cervical carotid arteriography was performed on 36 patients and compared with results of noninvasive Doppler arterial imaging and intravenous angiography (IVA). Seven cases of infective endocarditis (IE) due to anaerobic or microaerophilic bacteria were seen in a period of 42 months at Rancho Los Amigos Hospital (Downey, California), representing 10.6 percent of the total number of 66 cases that carried the diagnosis of IE. Acute intracranial hypertension may respond to intravenous mannitol, but frequent administration can cause cerebral edema or renal problems. The pharmacokinetics of alfentanil (R39209), a new short-acting opioid analgesic, have been studied in eleven patients.
