[Effectiveness of urethroplasty in strictures and distraction defects of the membranous urethra: a systematic review and meta-analysis].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the outcomes of urethroplasty for strictures and distraction defects of the membranous urethra through a systematic review and meta-analysis, and to supplement these findings with a neural network analysis to identify key predictors of success. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten original studies (totaling 930 patients) meeting criteria were included. The primary outcome was defined as the absence of restenosis, confirmed by urethrography/cystoscopy. Proportions were meta-analyzed using logit transformation and a random-effects model (for I >50%). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis

Radioprotective effects of ethanolic extract from walnut kernel internal septum on lethal X-ray exposure in Wistar rats.

This study assessed the radioprotective efficacy of an ethanolic extract from the walnut kernel internal septum (Juglans regia L.) in Wistar rats exposed to a lethal X-ray dose of 6.73 Gy. The extract was administered at 400, 1600, or 6400 mg/kg, either 2 h before (pre-treatment, n = 7 per group) or after (post-treatment, n = 9 per group) irradiation, with survival monitored over 30 and 60 days. In pre-treated rats, the high dose (6400 mg/kg) consistently provided full protection, surpassing radiation-only controls which showed significant mortality (42.9 ± 7 % at 30 days and 28.5 ± 7 % at 60

Primary cilium restricts TGF-β/SMAD signaling induced RIBEs in the co-culture model.

Transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) is the predominant cytokine responding to ionizing radiation and participates in radiation induced bystander effects (RIBEs). Primary cilia (PC) coordinates with multiple signaling pathways, exhibit specialized functions in TGF-β signal transduction. Our previous studies using a medium transfer model revealed that PC modulates RIBEs by restricting TGF-β signaling. To further investigate PC's mechanistic role in RIBEs, proton microbeam radiation (MR) and partial radiation (PR) were used to arrange the co-culture bystander system. Key methodologies included s

ON101 counteracts oxidative stress and inflammation in radiation-induced dermatitis through Keap1/Nrf2 signaling.

Radiation-induced dermatitis (RID) remains a significant and challenging side effect of radiotherapy, with few effective topical interventions. This study investigates ON101 as a therapeutic candidate for RID, focusing on its modulation of the Keap1/Nrf2 signaling pathway. Using a murine model of radiation-induced skin injury, topical application of ON101 substantially reduced skin damage, as evidenced by decreased wound severity scores, preserved body weight, and improved histopathological outcomes. Histological analyses using H&E and Masson's trichrome staining revealed that ON101 and its ac

Ultrafast power doppler ultrasound enables longitudinal tracking of vascular changes that correlate with immune response after radiotherapy.

Rationale: While immunotherapy shows great promise in patients with triple negative breast cancer, many will not respond to treatment. Radiotherapy has the potential to prime the tumor-immune microenvironment for immunotherapy. However, predicting response is difficult due to tumor heterogeneity across patients, which necessitates personalized medicine strategies that incorporate tumor tracking into the therapeutic approach. Here, we investigated the use of ultrasound (US) imaging of the tumor vasculature to monitor the tumor response to treatment. Methods: We utilized ultrafast power doppler

Immediate Irradiation Induced Cerebral Water and Hemodynamic Response in Whole Brain Radiotherapy.

PURPOSE: Effects of clinical radiotherapy are often studied between or after irradiations. The current study's aim was to monitor an immediate irradiation response in cerebral water and hemodynamics in patients treated with whole brain radiotherapy (WBRT) and to assess the response's individuality. METHODS: We used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to monitor changes in cerebral water, oxyhemoglobin (HbO), and deoxyhemoglobin (HbR) during the irradiation of 31 patients (age 69.3 ± 12.5 years, 16 females) receiving WBRT. The radiation dose delivered to a patient during a single mea

Dose optimization in newborn abdominal radiography: Assessing the added value of additional filtration on radiation dose and image quality using an anthropomorphic phantom.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal radiographs remain useful in newborns. Given the high radiation sensitivity of this population, it is necessary to optimize acquisition techniques to minimize radiation exposure. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the effects of three additional filtrations on radiation dose and image quality in abdominal X-rays of newborns using an anthropomorphic phantom. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Abdominal radiographs of an anthropomorphic newborn phantom were performed using acquisition parameters ranging from 55 to 70 kV and from 0.4 to 2.5 mAs, without and with three different additional filtrations:

Monte Carlo study of organ doses and related secondary cancer risk estimations for patients undergoing prostate radiotherapy: Algerian population-based study.

The present study aimed to assess organ doses and the associated cancer risks related to secondary radiation (photons and neutrons) exposure during 3D Conformational Radiotherapy (3D-CRT) for patients with prostate cancer in Algeria. To this purpose, a detailed geometric Monte Carlo (MC) modeling of the LINAC, combined with a hybrid whole-body phantom was carried out. The secondary radiation doses were calculated in patient's organs, both within and outside the field. The obtained doses were used to estimate the Lifetime Attributable Risks (LARs) for cancer incidence for out of field organs, u

Overexpression of SIRT6 regulates NRF2/HO-1 and NF-κB signaling pathways to alleviate UVA-induced photoaging in skin fibroblasts.

Skin photoaging, resulting from prolonged exposure to sunlight, especially UVA rays, has been identified as a key contributor to age-related skin degeneration. However, the mechanism by which UVA radiation induces skin cell senescence has not been fully elucidated. In this investigation, bioinformatics technology was employed to identify SIRT6 as the core hub gene involved in the progression of skin photoaging. The study evinced that prolonged exposure of cutaneous fibroblasts to UVA radiation results in a marked reduction in the expression of SIRT6, both in vivo and in vitro. Knockdown of SIR

Radiation-induced sarcomas following childhood cancer - A Canadian Sarcoma Research and Clinical Collaboration Study (CanSaRCC).

BACKGROUND: Radiation-induced sarcoma (RIS) is a late toxicity of radiation therapy (RT) usually associated with poor prognosis. Due to ongoing improvements in childhood cancer treatment and patient outcomes, RIS may become more prevalent notwithstanding evolving indications for RT. Due to limited reported studies, we sought to review our experience with RIS in survivors of pediatric cancer. METHODOLOGY: Data were collected on RIS patients following treatment for childhood cancer (initial diagnosis <18 years) identified in the CanSaRCC database. Additionally, details on the protocol guidance

Development of high-throughput systems for biodosimetry.

Biomarkers for ionising radiation exposure have great utility in scenarios where there has been a potential exposure and physical dosimetry is missing or in dispute, such as for occupational and accidental exposures. Biomarkers that respond as a function of dose are particularly useful as biodosemeters to determine the dose of radiation to which an individual has been exposed. These dose measurements can also be used in medical scenarios to track doses from medical exposures and even have the potential to identify an individual's response to radiation exposure that could help tailor treatments

Preliminary efficacy of [90Y]DOTA-biotin-avidin radiotherapy against non-muscle invasive bladder cancer.

PURPOSE: Bladder cancer represents 3% of all new cancer diagnoses per year. We propose intravesical radionuclide therapy using the β-emitter 90Y linked to DOTA-biotin-avidin ([90Y]DBA) to deliver short-range radiation against non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Image-guided biodistribution of intravesical DBA was investigated in an animal model by radiolabeling DBA with the 68Ga and dynamic microPET imaging following intravesical infusion of [68Ga]DBA for up to 4 h and post-necropsy γ-counting of organs. The antitumor activity of [90Y]DBA was investigated using a

Research progress on mechanism and dosimetry of brainstem injury induced by intensity-modulated radiotherapy, proton therapy, and heavy ion radiotherapy.

Radiotherapy (RT) is an effective method for treating head and neck cancer (HNC). However, RT may cause side effects during and after treatment. Radiation-induced brainstem injury (BSI) is often neglected due to its low incidence and short survival time and because it is indistinguishable from intracranial tumor progression. It is currently believed that the possible mechanism of radiation-induced BSI includes increased expression of vascular endothelial growth factor and damage of vascular endothelial cells, neurons, and glial cells as well as an inflammatory response and oxidative stress. At

IFNgamma-inducible CXCL10/CXCR3 axis alters the sensitivity of HEp-2 cells to ionizing radiation.

Radiotherapy is a conventional approach for anti-cancer treatment, killing tumor cells through damaging cellular DNA. While increasing studies have demonstrated that tumors generated the tolerance to radiation and tumor immune system was found to be correlated to radiotherapy resistance. Therefore, it is critical to identify potential immune factors associated with the efficacy of radiotherapy. Here in this study, we evaluated the sensitivities of different tumor cells to radiation and determined HEp-2 cells as the radio-resistant tumor cells for further investigation. IFNgamma as a key regula

Does Internal Mammary Node Irradiation for Breast Cancer Make a Significant Difference to the Diameter of the Internal Mammary Artery? Correlation with Computed Tomography.

OBJECTIVE: Lymphatic irradiation in breast cancer improves locoregional control and has been shown to decrease distant metastasis. However, irradiation also accelerates the formation of atherosclerosis and can cause stenosis, not only in the coronary arteries but also in the internal mammary artery (IMA). The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of radiation on IMAs via computed tomography (CT). METHODS: We reviewed the data of 3,612 patients with breast cancer treated with radiotherapy (RT) between January 2010 and December 2016. We included 239 patients with appropriate imaging

Morphological and functional changes in neonatally X-irradiated thyroid gland in rats.

Exposure to ionized radiation in childhood has been recognized as a risk factor for the development of thyroid cancer and possibly for other thyroid disorders. However, the effects of neonatal radiation exposure on thyroid morphology and functions have never been explored despite its potential importance. One-week-old male Wistar rats were subjected to cervical X-irradiation at 6 and 12 Gy. Animals were examined at the ages of 2, 8 and 18 weeks old. For comparison, 8-week-old rats were cervically X-irradiated at the same doses. Thyroid histology was examined by computer-assisted microscopy to

Diagnostic Radiation Exposure in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease.

BACKGROUND: Because of the chronic and relapsing nature of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which often requires characterization with CT scan, IBD patients might be exposed to a large amount of radiation. As a cumulative effective dose (CED) ≥ 100 mSv is considered significant for stochastic risks of cancer, it is important to monitor and control the radiation exposure of the IBD patients. In the present work, we aimed to quantify the mean CED in IBD patients to assess any harmful effects of radiation. METHODS: This study includes 200 IBD patients, identified retrospectively, from the outpa

UV Protection by Natural Products: C. myrrha Oil Versus Sunscreen.

Exposure to various types of ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun has been linked to skin cancer. Use of sunscreen can reduce the damaging and carcinogenic effects of UV radiation. However, multiple chemicals in sunscreen can trigger allergic responses, making people less inclined to use sunscreen. Thus, finding natural, plant-based alternatives to sunscreen with similar efficacy has become an important area of research. Myrrh oil, extracted from the shrub Commiphora myrrha, has been used in the treatment of topical wounds and studies have shown that it may provide protection against solar
