STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review.
PURPOSE: A 5-year longitudinal study documenting and comparing patterns of traumatic spinal injuries (TSIs) observed in developing countries.
OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE: Current knowledge of the patterns and epidemiology of TSI are based on evidence from developed countries and there is a lack of data from developing countries to enable a comparison of information to formulate healthcare policies.
METHODS: A review of case records of all patients treated at a tertiary level trauma center over a 5-year period (2015-2019) was performed. Epidemiological, clinica

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is recognized as a factor of morbidity and mortality in trauma patients suffering from severe blunt traumatic brain injury (TBI). The administration of pharmacological prophylaxis is broadly accepted as an effective therapy to prevent VTE events in trauma patients. Regardless of its ascertained efficacy, the risk of hematoma progression complicates the therapy in patients suffering from TBI: therefore, the optimal time to start prophylactic anticoagulation in these patients remains controversial.
METHODS: All primary admissions to our level-1-trauma ce

PURPOSE: Facial fractures are a harbinger when it comes to airway management. Facial fractures can cause airway obstruction or preclude the use of intubation. We aim to examine the etiologies, types of facial fractures, and the risk factors that may lead to requirement of an advance airway.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed of all facial fractures in the adult population in a level 1 trauma center in an urban environment (University Hospital in Newark, NJ). Patient demographics were collected, as well as location of fractures, concomitant injuries, and course of hospital sta

BACKGROUND: Pediatric cervical spine injuries (CSI) are rare but potentially devastating sequelae of blunt trauma. Existing protocols to evaluate children at risk for CSI frequently incorporate computed topography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); however, the clinical value of performing both remains unclear.
METHODS: Single-center retrospective review of pediatric trauma patients who underwent both CT and MRI of the cervical spine between 2001 and 2015. Based on radiographic findings, CT and MRI results were grouped into one of three categories: no injury, stable injury, or unstabl

PURPOSE: The paranasal sinuses are complex anatomical structures of unknown significance. One hypothesis theorizes that the sinuses, in the event of a traumatic injury, function as a crumple zone to distribute and absorb energy to protect the brain and other critical structures. The current study investigates the association between frontal sinus (FS) volume and the severity of cerebral insults following craniofacial trauma.
METHODS: All patients with FS fracture admitted to a level 1 trauma center from 2011 to 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. FS volumes were measured from computed tomogra

Adverse perinatal health outcomes are heightened among women with psychosocial risk factors, including childhood adversity and a lack of social support. Biological aging could be one pathway by which such outcomes occur. However, data examining links between psychosocial factors and indicators of biological aging among perinatal women are limited. The current study examined the associations of childhood socioeconomic status (SES), childhood trauma, and current social support with telomere length in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in a sample of 81 women assessed in early, mid, and l

BACKGROUND: Inferior vena cava filters (IVCF) for venous thromboembolic prophylaxis in high-risk trauma patients is a controversial practice. Utilization of IVCF prophylaxis was evaluated at a level 1 trauma center. Daily cost of IVCF prophylaxis, time to IVCF, duration between IVCF and chemoprophylaxis, and number of patients needed to treat (NNT) to prevent pulmonary embolism (PE) was calculated.
METHODS: A retrospective review of prophylactic IVCF over a 5-year period (2010-2014). Demographic, physiologic, injury, procedural, and outcome data were abstracted from the administrative trauma

BACKGROUND: No guidelines exist for the evaluation of patients after near hanging. Most patients receive a comprehensive workup, regardless of examination. We hypothesize that patients with a normal neurologic examination, without major signs or symptoms suggestive of injury, require no additional workup.
METHODS: We reviewed medical charts of adult trauma patients who presented to a Level I trauma center between 1995 and 2013 after an isolated near-hanging episode. Demographics, Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score, imaging, and management were collected. Patients were stratified by neurologic exa

BACKGROUND: Although computed tomography (CT) has become the preferred diagnostic modality, immediate surgical intervention is often required for severely injured patients with minimum preoperative radiographic evaluation. The utility of postoperative CT (postop-CT) for the identification of undiagnosed injuries and its impact on patient management remain unclear. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the utility of postop-CT for the identification of clinically significant injuries in patients who underwent an emergent life-saving procedure.

BACKGROUND: Emerging literature suggests that closed head injuries may be an important etiology of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST). Fractures over the dural sinuses, in particular, may predispose such patients to this secondary complication. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence and characteristics of CVST resulting from skull fractures overlying cerebral venous sinuses at a single tertiary care center.
METHODS: A retrospective review of consecutive patients presenting to our institution with skull fractures from blunt head trauma between 1 January 2009 and 31 Decem

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Degeneration of the atlantodens and atlanto-axial joints is associated with cervical spine pain and may also be associated with an increased risk of dens fracture. However, there is paucity of literature describing the prevalence of specific degenerative changes in the atlantodens and atlanto-axial facet joints.
PURPOSE: To document age-related degenerative changes of the cervical spine in a large cohort of patients.
STUDY DESIGN/SETTING: This is a retrospective cohort study.
PATIENT SAMPLE: Adult trauma patients were admitted to our Level 1 trauma center.

BACKGROUND: Longitudinal symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are often characterized by heterogeneous trajectories, which may have unique pre-, peri- and post-trauma risk and protective factors. To date, however, no study has evaluated the nature and determinants of predominant trajectories of PTSD symptoms in World Trade Center (WTC) responders.
METHOD: A total of 10835 WTC responders, including 4035 professional police responders and 6800 non-traditional responders (e.g. construction workers) who participated in the WTC Health Program (WTC-HP), were evaluated an average of 3,
