Female Primary urethral carcinoma is a rare malignancy frequently diagnosed at an advanced stage. Surgery, the most common treatment modality, is associated with substantial functional impairment. Here, we present the case of a 45-year-old HIV-positive woman with locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma infiltrating the bladder, vagina, and left obturator muscle, treated with definitive concurrent chemoradiotherapy combining fractionated external beam radiotherapy and weekly cisplatin. Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is a heterogeneous disorder. A variety of histopathological subtypes occur, and the molecular mechanisms associated with these subtypes can differ. Only a small fraction of all RCC is accounted for by inherited cases (e.g. von Hippel-Lindau disease, Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome, hereditary leiomyomatosis renal cell cancer), but such cases can pose specific clinical management issues and offer opportunities for early cancer detection and prevention. Furthermore, inherited RCC syndromes have provided important paradigms to study the molecular basis of renal tumourigenesis.

OBJECTIVES: Are newer histologic investigations helpful in the evaluation of the prognosis of vulvar carcinoma?
METHODS: 147 primary squamous cell carcinomas of the vulva were examined for overall- and disease-free survival (mean observation 59.6 months).
RESULTS: A significance in prognosis was found for FIGO-stage, a new-created histologic grade, p53- and vimentin-expression and amount of T-lymphocytes in tumoral stroma. Unfavourable prognosis was detected for tumors with elevated growth fraction, high proliferating cell-compartment (S + G2 + M) and increased cytokeratin-8-expression.

Hereditary elliptocytosis (HE) is a heterogeneous group of red-cell disorders. One class of HE patients was shown to have a mutated erythrocyte membrane skeletal protein 4.1 gene. We have recently shown that human protein 4.1 contains multiple isoforms with novel sizes, functions, and tissue-specific expression. Here, we report the subregional localization of this gene to human chromosome 1p33----p34.2, based on the fractional length, by nonradioactive in situ hybridization.

Myasthenia gravis, malignant thymoma, multiple schwannomas and monoclonal IgA gammopathy coexisted in a 54-year-old Japanese man. Serum acetylcholine receptor antibody activity was located in the IgG fraction, but not in the paraprotein peak. It was speculated that all these disorders might fall under the spectrum of the diseases associated with thymic abnormality or that some growth factors might induce neoplasms and activation of B cell clones of autoantibodies (including acetylcholine receptor antibody) in this case.

Decrease in the activity of hexokinase was found in soluble fraction of stomach smooth muscles of rabbits with alloxane diabetes. Administration of insulin into intact rabbits led to distinct decrease in the activity of lactate and malate dehydrogenases in cells of the stomach fundal part. In smooth muscles of rabbits with alloxane diabetes pyruvate was formed from lactate at a higher rate (increase in content of LDH1 and LDH2) and after administration of insulin into the animals--lactate was formed from pyruvate at an increased rate.
