OBJECTIVE: To explore the regeneration characteristics after cauda equina transection.
METHODS: Fibrin glue was chosen to repair transected left L6,7 roots in cat, and right roots in situ of the transected ends were served as the control. The characteristics of regeneration were observed by immunohistocytochemistry and morphometric analysis.

PURPOSE: Course and pathophysiology of a typical syndrome after irradiation of the cauda equina were studied.
PATIENTS AND MATERIALS: 7 patients with irradiation damage of the cauda equina were examined clinically and neurophysiologically.
RESULTS: After a mean delay of 5 years and 6 months all patients developed an ascending lower motor neuron weakness of the legs without pain, in part accompanied with mild sensory and sphincter symptoms. Electromyography, evoked potentials and neurography were important for the differential diagnosis to tumor infiltration. The course was progredient.

In this prospective study, 72 patients with the clinical diagnosis of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis underwent routine preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and neurologic consultations. The correlation between inner ear pressure and cochlear function was investigated in guinea pigs with unilaterally obliterated endolymphatic sacs and ducts. In 11 animals that developed endolymphatic hydrops, auditory thresholds as monitored by auditory evoked action potentials had increased with recruitment. A consecutive series of patients with normal activity and a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (10 male and 31 female) underwent extensive ophthalmological examination including visual evoked potentials (VEPs) and a new test of contrast sensitivity, which is described in detail. We studied the effect of the opiate antagonist naloxone on the recovery of cats injured with a 400-g-cm impact injury to T-9. The animals were evaluated by recording somatosensory evoked potentials and performing weekly neurological examinations. Several dose schedules were followed.
