Sagittal alignment of the cervical spine in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis treated by posteromedial translation.

PURPOSE: To analyze postoperative changes in the cervical sagittal alignment (CSA) of patients with AIS treated by posteromedial translation … normokyphotic and 67 % had a CSA in the physiological range. Sagittal balance of the thoracolumbar spine was not significantly modified postoperatively. However, the procedure significantly changed the position of C2 in regard to the CHVA (C2-CHVA), which reflects headposition (P = 0.012). At last follow-up, the patients sagittal imbalance was not sign …

Symptomatic calcifying pseudotumor of the thoracic spine that resolved with the indomethacin treatment: a case report.

STUDY DESIGN: Case report. OBJECTIVE: To report a rare case of calcifying pseudotumor of the thoracic spine that resolved completely with Indomethacin treatment. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: A 48-year-old male patient presented with a complaint of left T9 radiculopathy. Computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance images showed a calcifying pseudotumor of the thoracic spine. The nature of this disease remains unknown. This lesion behaves as a tumor-like lesion that is probably inflammatory in nature with a bone-forming potential. METHODS: The patient was treated conservatively with Indome…

Grade three disc degeneration is a critical stage for anterior spondylolisthesis in lumbar spine.

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about when and how progressive spondylolisthesis occurs. In this report segmental motion related to age and disc degeneration at L4/5 disc was investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 637 patients with low back and/or leg pain underwent radiologic and MRI examinations simultaneously. Because 190 patients with conditions which might impede accurate measurement were excluded, 447 patients, comprising 268 men and 179 women, were included; age range, was 10-86 (mean: 53) years. Three radiologic parameters slip in neutral position (mm), sagittal translation (mm), and segm

Osteoporotic characteristics persist in the spine of ovariectomized sheep after withdrawal of corticosteroid administration.

A validated ovine model of osteoporosis achieves severe bone loss in a relatively short period. This study investigated if osteoporotic features persist in this model after cessation of corticosteroid administration. Methods. Osteoporosis was induced in nine ewes by chronic corticosteroid injection, ovariectomy, and low calcium diet. Six ewes were used as controls. Bone mineral density (BMD) of the lumbar spine (LS) and body weight were assessed at regular intervals. After five months, corticosteroid treatment was withdrawn systematically over one month. Three months later, all animals were eu…

Anterior minimally invasive extrapleural retroperitoneal approach to the thoraco-lumbar junction of the spine.

BACKGROUND: The anterior approach to the thoraco-lumbar junction of the spine allows therapeutic interventions on post-traumatic, infectious, and neoplastic vertebral lesions from T11 to L2 combining spinal cord decompression, corporectomy, and vertebral body fusion. However, this approach also has a reputation for damaging the intervening anatomic structures (lungs, peritoneum, and diaphragm). The objective of this study was to show that both nervous structure decompression and anterior vertebral reconstruction can be achieved via an anterior minimally invasive extrapleural retroperitoneal (A…

Features of the lumbar spine on magnetic resonance images following sectioning of filum terminale.

OBJECT: Spinal cord tethering due to a thickened filum terminale is a well-described entity that can be treated surgically. Postoperative MR imaging of the lumbar spine is performed for unrelated issues or for the development of new symptoms suggestive of cord retethering. A lack of radiological criteria for successful detethering makes interpretation of postoperative MR images challenging. The delineation of postoperative radiological characteristics of a sectioned filum terminale is therefore valuable to clinicians managing these often complex cases. METHODS: The clinical data for 16 patien…

The short-time structural plasticity of dendritic spines is altered in a model of Rett syndrome.

The maturation of excitatory transmission comes about through a developmental period in which dendritic spines are highly motile and their number, form and size are rapidly changing. Surprisingly, although these processes are crucial for the formation of cortical circuitry, little is known about possible alterations of these processes in brain disease. By means of acute in vivo 2-photon imaging we show that the dynamic properties of dendritic spines of layer V cortical neurons are deeply affected in a mouse model of Rett syndrome (RTT) at a time around P25 when the neuronal phenotype of the di…

MRI of the lumbar spine at 7 Tesla in healthy volunteers and a patient with congenital malformations.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate sequences that are established at lower magnetic field strengths for lumbar spine imaging at 7 Tesla (7 T) MR imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The lumbar spine of five healthy volunteers and a patient with spina bifida and meningocele were evaluated at 7 T. The examination included a T2-TSE (turbo spin echo), a 3D-DESS (double-echo steady-state sequence), a 3D-CISS (constructive interference in steady-state sequence), and a 3D-VIBE (volumetric interpolated breath hold examination) sequence. Imaging quality was evaluated by two raters on a three-…

Avulsion-fracture of the anterior superior iliac spine with meralgia paresthetica: a case report.

We present a rare case of avulsion-fracture of the anterior superior iliac spine with meralgia paresthetica in a 16-year-old male basketball player. He had sensory disturbance affecting his left lateral thigh 10 days after the injury. Tinel's sign was elicited on percussing the avulsed bony fragment of the anterior superior iliac spine. He underwent open reduction and internal fixation. The lateral femoral cutaneous nerve was noted to be entrapped by one third of the avulsed bony fragment. That fragment was removed, and the remaining portion was reduced and fixed with 2 screws. At week 6, the …

Cervical spine bone mineral density as a function of vertebral level and anatomic location.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Bone mineral density (BMD) measurements acquired from quantitative computed tomography scans have been shown to correlate with bone mechanical properties such as strength, stiffness, and yield load. There are currently no reports of BMD as a function of anatomic location within each vertebra. PURPOSE: The overall objective of this study was to characterize BMD in the cervical spine as a function of level and anatomic location. STUDY DESIGN: Cervical spine BMD was evaluated in vivo using a clinically relevant age group. PATIENT SAMPLE: Twenty-two subjects (13 women and 9 …

Magnetic resonance imaging of the lumbar spine with axial loading: a review of 120 cases.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the imaging findings of patients with clinical symptoms of lower back pain who underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lumbar spine with axial loading. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We examined 120 patients by MRI, before and after axial loading, using a compression device that applied 50% of their body weight for a load time of 5min. The dural sac cross area (DSCA) was examined by two experienced radiologists before and after axial load, and their findings were compared. Degenerative abnormalities within and adjacent to the spinal canal were also analyzed. RESULTS: A…

Paget disease of the spine: an evaluation of 101 patients with a histomorphometric analysis of 29 cases.

INTRODUCTION: Paget's disease of bone (PDB) is the second most frequent metabolic bone disease with the spine being a common site of manifestation. Still, neither the disease's etiology nor reasons for its manifestation at preferred skeletal sites are understood. The aim of the current study was therefore to perform a histologic and histomorphometric analysis of PBD biopsies of the spine to achieve a more detailed understanding concerning PDB activity and characteristics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Out of 754 cases with histologically proven PDB, 101 cases were identified to have involvement of t…
