Enhanced reading time efficiency by use of automatically unfolded CT rib reformations in acute trauma.

Rationale of this study was to evaluate whether unfolded rib images enhance time efficiency in detection of rib fractures and time efficiency in patients with acute thoracic trauma. 51 subsequent patients with thoracic trauma underwent 64-slice computed tomography. 1mm thick axial slices were reformatted using a commercially available post-processing software application generating rotatable unfolded rib images. Diagnostic accuracy was evaluated by 3 readers and compared to multiplanar reformations of the original CT images. Reformation and evaluation times were recorded. 116 rib fractures wer

Modeling and correction of bolus dispersion effects in dynamic susceptibility contrast MRI.

PURPOSE: Bolus dispersion in DSC-MRI can lead to errors in cerebral blood flow (CBF) estimation by up to 70% when using singular value decomposition analysis. However, it might be possible to correct for dispersion using two alternative methods: the vascular model (VM) and control point interpolation (CPI). Additionally, these approaches potentially provide a means to quantify the microvascular residue function. METHODS: VM and CPI were extended to correct for dispersion by means of a vascular transport function. Simulations were performed at multiple dispersion levels and an in vivo analysis

Quantitative analysis of the cochlea using three-dimensional reconstruction based on microcomputed tomographic images.

The aim of this study was to provide data on various dimensions of the normal cochlea using three-dimensional reconstruction based on high-resolution micro-CT images. The petrous parts of 39 temporal bones were scanned by micro-computed tomography (CT) with a slice thickness of 35 μm. The micro-CT images were used in reconstructing three-dimensional volumes of the bony labyrinth using computer software. The volumes were used to measure 12 dimensions of the cochlea, and statistical analysis was carried out. The dimensions of cochleae varied widely between different specimens. The mean height an

Automatic localization of solid organs on 3D CT images by a collaborative majority voting decision based on ensemble learning.

PURPOSE: Organ segmentation is an essential step in the development of computer-aided diagnosis/surgery systems based on computed tomography (CT) images. A universal segmentation approach/scheme that can adapt to different organ segmentations can substantially increase the efficiency and robustness of such computer-aided systems. However, this is a very challenging problem. An initial determination of the approximate position and range of a target organ in CT images is prerequisite for precise organ segmentations. In this study, we have proposed a universal approach that enables automatic loca

Does hepatic vein transit time performed with contrast-enhanced ultrasound predict the severity of hepatic fibrosis?

Previously published data suggest a hepatic vein transit time (HVTT) threshold of more than 24 s can distinguish mild to moderate from advanced fibrosis. In this study, we attempted to validate HVTT as a noninvasive index of hepatic fibrosis. Patients were scanned using real-time, pulse-inversion mode following bolus injections of the contrast agent Definity. HVTT was correlated with the degree of fibrosis obtained from contemporaneous liver biopsy. The study population included 40 patients with chronic liver disease and five healthy volunteers. Mean HVTT correlated with histologic grade as fo

[Acetabular fractures].

Treatment of acetabular fractures requires extensive knowledge of the bony anatomy, the amount of possible exposure of the bone with the selected approaches and fracture type-dependent indications of operative treatment. Classification of the fracture with detailed analysis of the fracture morphology is the basis for decision making and planning. The primary treatment aim is the anatomic reconstruction of the acetabulum which results in optimal long-term results. The basis of this overview is the presentation of standard treatment concepts in acetabular fracture surgery. Beside characteristics

Total arch replacement for a distal arch aneurysm with aberrant right subclavian artery.

Aberrant right subclavian artery is a rare condition with a prevalence of 0.5%-2.0% of the population. We report a case of distal aortic arch aneurysm with right subclavian artery. A 75-year-old man who was asymptomatic was referred to our hospital for a thoracic aortic aneurysm. Computed tomography showed a 55-mm fusiform aneurysm of the distal arch and an aberrant right subclavian artery. Total arch replacement was performed via median sternotomy with antegrade selective cerebral perfusion and hypothermic circulatory arrest. We reconstructed the aberrant right subclavian artery in the normal

Observer variation in the evaluation of lumbar herniated discs and root compression: spiral CT compared with MRI.

Spiral CT is considered the best alternative for MRI in the evaluation of herniated discs. The purpose of this study was to compare radiological evaluation of spiral CT with MRI in patients suspected of herniated discs. 57 patients with lumbosacral radicular syndrome underwent spiral CT and 1.5 T MRI. Two neuroradiologists independently evaluated 171 intervertebral discs for herniation or "bulge" and 456 nerve roots for root compression, once after CT and once after MRI. We compared interobserver agreement using the kappa statistic and we performed a paired comparison between CT and MRI. For d

[Microsurgical removal of deep vascular malformations using sonar-stereometry].

The advantages of a new, dynamic sonar technology in open stereotactic microsurgery are demonstrated by means of three surgical procedures for deep-seated vascular malformations that are not easy of access. With this method, targets can be aimed at without using rigid, obstructive pointing devices as in conventional stereotaxy. On the contrary, it is possible to take advantage of preformed anatomical spaces reaching the lesion most carefully by means of light-weight, free-hand on-target instruments. The spatial information, correlated with a CT data set, is displayed in real time with an accur

NeuroFAIR curator: an AI-assisted framework for metadata enrichment, quality screening, curation prioritization, and FAIR readiness of brain tumor MRI data.

PURPOSE: Public brain tumor MRI datasets are widely reused for classification and segmentation, but their metadata structure, technical annotation consistency, image quality, and FAIR readiness are seldom evaluated within a unified workflow. This study proposes NeuroFAIR Curator, an AI-assisted framework for metadata enrichment, computational quality screening, sample prioritization, and FAIR readiness assessment. The framework is intended for data stewardship and does not determine the clinical correctness of tumor annotations. METHODS: NeuroFAIR Curator was evaluated on BRISC 2025, a two-di

Evaluation of 3D fat-navigator based retrospective motion correction in the clinical setting of patients with brain tumors.

PURPOSE: A 3D fat-navigator (3D FatNavs)-based retrospective motion correction is an elegant approach to correct for motion as it requires no additional hardware and can be acquired during existing 'dead-time' within common 3D protocols. The purpose of this study was to clinically evaluate 3D FatNavs in the work-up of brain tumors. METHODS: An MRI-based fat-excitation motion navigator incorporated into a standard MPRAGE sequence was acquired in 40 consecutive patients with (or with suspected) brain tumors, pre and post-Gadolinium injection. Each case was categorized into key anatomical landma

Identifying Voxels at Risk for Progression in Glioblastoma Based on Dosimetry, Physiologic and Metabolic MRI.

Despite the longstanding role of radiation in cancer treatment and the presence of advanced, high-resolution imaging techniques, delineation of voxels at-risk for progression remains purely a geometric expansion of anatomic images, missing subclinical disease at risk for recurrence while treating potentially uninvolved tissue and increasing toxicity. This remains despite the modern ability to precisely shape radiation fields. A striking example of this is the treatment of glioblastoma, a highly infiltrative tumor that may benefit from accurate identification of subclinical disease. In this stu
