Eight patients with severe hydrochloric acid injury of the esophagus and stomach had early esophagogastrectomy. Four patients survived and 6 to 8 weeks later underwent successful substernal colon replacement. The value of early diagnosis and subsequent aggressive surgical management of patients who have ingested hydrochloric acid is stressed.

In a prospective study the authors correlated the degree of hematuria and of blunt abdominal trauma with the results of emergency excretory urography. A random sample of 143 patients from a centralized psychiatric emergency service with a catchment area of one million people was studied. A two-stage interview was conducted for diagnosis of DSM-III-R eating disorders. Of those reporting active bingeing, 14.5% were men, and 22.4% were women. No cases of anorexia nervosa were discovered. Bulimia nervosa was diagnosed in 3.0% of the women and 2.6% of the men. Race and marital status were unrelated to bingeing or to any eating disorder diagnosis. Many patients never had discussed their eating behaviors before with a therapist.

Two cases of cervical spine fractures presenting as cardiac arrest in one case and as a coma with pneumonia and cervical osteomyelitis in the other are discussed. There were 56 deaths following trauma in the adult Accident and Emergency Department of the University Hospital, Nottingham, over a 5-year period from 1983 to 1987. Forty-six of these deaths followed road-traffic accidents. The trauma deaths made up 16% of all adult deaths and 0.13 per thousand new attenders. The present study was carried out at the Department of Surgery, All India Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital, New Delhi, between January 1982 and October 1984. Of 469 patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) from ruptured intracranial aneurysms, 31 had large intracerebral haematomas and were treated as emergency cases at the University Central Hospital, Kuopio, Finland during 1979-1985.
