OBJECTIVE: Transcatheter valve-in-valve is an accepted treatment in high-risk patients with degenerative stented bioprostheses in the aortic position. Experience in treating stentless valves is, however, limited. Our aim was to determine the feasibility and single-center outcome of balloon expandable SAPIEN valve placement in degenerated stentless aortic valve bioprostheses.
METHODS: From February 2010 to January 2014, 10 patients with failing stentless bioprostheses underwent transcatheter aortic valve implantation using the Edwards SAPIEN transcatheter heart valve (SAPIEN, SAPIEN XT, and SA

We hereby present the case of a patient with severe aortic stenosis who underwent in her previous medical history a mitral valve replacement with a mechanical valve (Omnicarbon 27), and progressively developed a severe aortic stenosis. This patient was judged inoperable and then scheduled for CoreValve Revalving System implantation. Despite a good positioning of the CoreValve, an acute, severe mitral regurgitation developed soon after implantation as a consequence of the impaired movement of the mitral prosthesis leaflet. A condition of cardiogenic shock quickly developed. A good mitral prosth

OBJECTIVE: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation has been used to treat high-risk patients with bioprosthetic valve degeneration (valve-in-valve). We report our experience with transcatheter aortic valve implantation in the treatment of degenerated biologic aortic valve prostheses and discuss factors that can influence the outcome.
METHODS: From February 2009 to October 2011, 278 patients underwent transcatheter aortic valve implantation, of whom 23 underwent a valve-in-valve procedure with the Edwards Sapien valve to treat a failing bioprostheses in the aortic position. Eight of these valv

UNLABELLED: We here sought to assess thrombotic and hemorrhagic complications and associated risk factors during pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum in women with prosthetic heart valves (PHV).
METHODS: The retrospective cohort study covered January 2011 to December 2022. The objective of the study was to assess the risk factors and frequency of thrombotic and hemorrhagic complications during pregnancy, delivery, and the postpartum period in women with PHV based on the experience of one perinatal center. We included 88 pregnancies with 77 prosthetic heart valves (PHV), which were divided into

We report a case of 24-year-old man with single ventricle congenital heart disease and concomitant familial Fabry disease who developed progressive subaortic stenosis 22 years after Fontan procedure. Despite stable ventricular volumes, subaortic stenosis developed due to Fabry disease-related myocardial hypertrophy. He underwent pulmonary arterial trunk reconstruction with valved conduit and Damus-Kaye-Stansel (DKS) anastomosis. Postoperatively, smooth outflow tracts and stable valve function were observed. This case highlights the impact of Fabry disease on ventricular outflow tract obstructi

OBJECTIVES: Patients with symptomatic mitral valve disease unsuitable for repair can be sufficiently treated with surgical mitral valve replacement. The decision between biological and mechanical mitral valve replacement can be difficult, especially due to the question of the lesser of 2 evils: anticoagulation versus reoperation.
METHODS: This single-center, retrospective study included all patients undergoing mitral valve replacement between 2001 and 2020. Thirty-day mortality and periprocedural complications were analyzed. Propensity score matching adjusted for age, gender, weight, height,

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter pulmonary valve implantation is usually performed from a femoral venous - transfemoral - approach, but this may not be the optimal vascular access option in some patients. This study aimed to determine which group of patients might benefit from an internal jugular - transjugular - approach for transcatheter pulmonary valve implantation.
METHODS: This multicentre retrospective study included all patients who underwent attempted transcatheter pulmonary valve placement in the right ventricular outflow tract between April 2010 and June 2012 at two large congenital heart

BACKGROUND: All present biological cardiovascular prostheses are prone to progressive in vivo degeneration, which can be partially impaired by decellularization. The administration of statins may provide an additional beneficial effect. We provide the first in vivo data on the effect of statins on decellularized cardiovascular implants.
METHODS: Wistar rats with aortic valve insufficiency (day 14) were fed either with a pro-calcific diet (group C; n = 17), or the same diet additionally supplemented with simvastatin (group S; n = 16). Aortic conduits from Sprague-Dawley rats were detergent-dec

In a 56-year-old lady, a carcinoid tumor of the terminal ileum metastasized to regional lymph nodes, and the liver was removed by hemicolectomy in 2002. Following a history of cutaneous flushing, diarrhea, and bronchoconstriction 3 years later, a somatostatin therapy was instituted. As flushing and diarrhea resolved and levels of urinary excretion of 5-hydoxyindoleacetic acid decreased, shortness of breath was progressive and prompted a cardiac exam. Despite poor resolution, echocardiography revealed a thickening of the tricuspid valves (TK) with reduced mobility along with right atrial (RA) a

In silico trials are a promising way to increase the efficiency of the development, and the time to market of cardiovascular implantable devices. The development of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) devices, could benefit from in silico trials to overcome frequently occurring complications such as paravalvular leakage and conduction problems. To be able to perform in silico TAVI trials virtual cohorts of TAVI patients are required. In a virtual cohort, individual patients are represented by computer models that usually require patient-specific aortic valve geometries. This study a

BACKGROUND: Subclinical leaflet thrombosis is diagnosed using multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) and is characterised by a meniscal-shaped hypoattenuated lesion of one or more leaflets. Transcatheter aortic self-expandable valves are commonly manufactured with pliable pericardium over a nitinol frame that forms leaflet and extra-leaflet components such as the valve skirt. Little is known about extra-leaflet hypoattenuated lesion localisation, including that at the anatomical sinus level. Thus, the main aim of this study was to describe leaflet and extra-leaflet (anatomic sinus and subval
