Heat stress and protection from permanent acoustic injury in mice.

The inner ear can be permanently damaged by overexposure to high-level noise; however, damage can be decreased by previous exposure to moderate level, nontraumatic noise (). The mechanism of this "protective" effect is unclear, but a role for heat shock proteins has been suggested. The aim of the present study was to directly test protective effects of heat stress in the ear. For physiological experiments, CBA/CaJ mice were exposed to an intense octave band of noise (8-16 kHz) at 100 dB SPL for 2 hr, either with or without previous whole-body heat stress (rectal temperature to 41. 5 degrees C

Intraoperative auditory monitoring in acoustic neuroma surgery.

Intraoperative auditory monitoring is a useful adjunct that is currently evolving. Near-field monitoring techniques such as electrocochleography and direct eighth nerve compound action potential are being used more frequently. The use of these two techniques is compared in 26 patients undergoing hearing preservation acoustic neuroma resection. Overall, 9 (35%) of the 26 patients had their hearing preserved. Three (23%) of the 13 with electrocochleography monitoring and 6 (46%) of the 13 with direct compound action potential monitoring had hearing preserved after surgery. Although there was a s

Scopolamine impairs acquisition and facilitates consolidation of fear conditioning: differential effects for tone vs context conditioning.

Cholinergic antagonism impacts selected learning tasks. To understand where scopolamine exerts its action, learning tasks differentially sensitive to hippocampus and amygdala lesions were used. Hippocampal lesions prevent context fear conditioning without effect on tone conditioning. These lesions also produce a time-dependent retrograde deficit in context conditioning. The amygdala is necessary for both tone and context conditioning. To examine the possibility that cholinergic antagonism mimics hippocampal damage or amygdala damage, rats were given scopolamine (1 mg/kg) either before or after

Novel rat cardiac arrest model of posthypoxic myoclonus.

We describe the time course of and pharmacology associated with auditory-induced muscle jerks following cardiac arrest in rats. The data indicate that several key features of this model mimic those of human posthypoxic myoclonus. Similar to the human form, the muscle jerks appear in the rats following an acute hypoxic episode (cardiac arrest). Initially, it is known that both spontaneous and auditory-induced myoclonus are present in these animals; some cardiac-arrested rats also exhibit seizures. Over the first few days after the arrest, episodes of both the seizure activity and spontaneous my

A study on the phase spectral analysis of middle latency response and 40-Hz event-related potential in central nervous system disorders.

The synchrony measure method, or SM method, a phase spectral analysis described by Fridman in 1984 for ABR, was applied to 40-Hz event-related potential (40-Hz ERP), and was found to be a useful method for automatic detection in predicting hearing thresholds across the audiometric frequencies. Although 40-Hz ERP was claimed by Galambos to be the summation of middle latency responses (MLR), its origin is still controversial. Moreover, only a few articles have reported on the clinical use of 40-Hz ERP in patients with neurological disorders. We recorded ABRs, MLRs, and 40-Hz ERPs in 59 patients

Hearing loss and pneumococcal meningitis: an animal model.

Clinical studies of predisposing factors in the development of hearing loss secondary to bacterial meningitis have produced conflicting results. An animal model of meningogenic labyrinthitis was developed for more precise study of these parameters. Rabbits were inoculated intrathecally with 10(5) pneumococci to induce meningitis. Hearing thresholds were measured using auditory-evoked responses to 1 kHz, 10 kHz, and click stimuli before infection and every 12 hours thereafter. Profound deafness occurred in all subjects at an average of 48 hours following infection. The incidence and severity of

[Estrogen protects the dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra against damage induced by 6-hydroxydopamine].

Substantial evidence strongly implies that sensory gating P50 (also called P50 auditory evoked potential, P50) and dopaminergic neurotransmitters are related. In animal experiment, P50 can be recorded in an awake and quiet state with freedom of movement. Until now there is lack of animal experimental data on the supportive effect of estrogen on function of dopaminergic neurons in substantia nigra (SN) in physiological state. In the present study, female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were used as subjects. The animals were divided randomly into four groups: (1) control group (normal animals); (2) Pa

Otoacoustic Emissions.

Otoacoustic emissions are low-intensity sounds that are produced in the cochlea and transmitted through the middle ear apparatus to the ear canal. They can be detected and extracted from the background noise in the ear canal through the use of a sensitive microphone and selective filtering or averaging techniques. The technical aspects of emission recording are very similar to those associated with the detection and capture of auditory evoked potentials. Emissions provide an acoustic link to a physiological window through which we can view the auditory periphery using frequency-specific stimul

Can auditory brain stem response accurately reflect the cochlear function?

Auditory brain stem response (ABR) and compound action potential (CAP) recordings have been used in animal research to determine hearing sensitivity. Because of the relative ease of testing, the ABR test has been more commonly used in assessing cochlear lesions than the CAP test. The purpose of this experiment is to examine the difference between these two methods in monitoring the dynamic changes in auditory function after cochlear damage and in detecting asymmetric hearing loss due to unilateral cochlear damage. ABR and CAP were measured in two models of cochlear damage: acoustic trauma indu

Multimodal Biophotonics of Semiconducting Polymer Nanoparticles.

Biophotonics as an interdisciplinary frontier plays an increasingly important role in modern biomedical science. Optical agents are generally involved in biophotonics to interpret biomolecular events into readable optical signals for imaging and diagnosis or to convert photons into other forms of energy (such as heat, mechanical force, or chemical radicals) for therapeutic intervention and biological stimulation. Development of new optical agents including metallic nanoparticles, quantum dots, up-conversion nanoparticles, carbon dots, and silica nanoparticles has contributed to the advancement

Comparison of thyrotropin concentrations measured by bulk acoustic wave technology and chemiluminescence in hyperthyroid cats and cats with non-thyroidal illness.

ObjectivesA thyrotropin (also known as thyroid-stimulating hormone [TSH]) assay using bulk acoustic wave (TSH-BAW) technology is a sensitive and specific test for diagnosing hyperthyroidism; however, the effect of various types of non-thyroidal illness (NTI) have not been evaluated with this assay. The objectives of this study were to compare serum TSH concentrations using the TSH-BAW and a currently available TSH chemiluminescent immunoassay (TSH-CLIA) in hyperthyroid cats, cats with NTI and healthy cats, as well as to compare sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing hyperthyroidism. Methods

Challenges of Cochlear Implant Use for Spatial Hearing in Children and Adolescents With Asymmetric Hearing Including Single Sided Deafness.

This study aimed to determine hearing benefits and challenges for children using cochlear implants (CIs) in one ear and acoustic hearing in the other (bimodal hearing) through hearing aids (HA-CI) or normal hearing (single-sided deafness/SSD-CI). Participants were 34 children with CIs [MAge (SD)=12.2 (3.2) years] and 6 peers with typical hearing/controls [MAge (SD)=13.8 (1.7) years]. Side of better hearing (aural preference) was measured by word recognition in quiet and noise, and spondee-word recognition thresholds in noise co-located/0° or separated (left/right 90°). Self-reported hearing wa

Positive suggestions via headphones during general anesthesia for the improvement of vegetative & cognitive postoperative course parameters in elderly orthopedic patients - a randomized controlled double-blinded trial (POSSUDEL).

BACKGROUND: Postoperative delirium and cognitive deficits are significant surgical complications, especially in elderly patients. The reported incidence of postoperative delirium is variable but notably high in cardiothoracic, orthopedic, and general surgery. The etiology of postoperative delirium is known to be multifactorial, with prevention being the most effective strategy currently available. This study aims to explore the potential benefits of positive suggestions delivered via headphones during general anesthesia on the incidence of postoperative delirium and improving postoperative pai

Dual-task costs of listening while driving in older adults with and without audiometric hearing loss: Behavioural and neurophysiological outcomes.

Age-related hearing loss may increase listening difficulties in challenging listening conditions (e.g., speech-in-noise), limiting cognitive resources available to perform common, complex multitasking behaviours like listening while driving. Older adults with hearing loss may compensate by increasing prefrontal cortex (PFC) activation in response to multitasking demands. Few realistic, controlled studies have examined how competing attentional demands of listening while driving affect performance and brain activation, and how these patterns may differ between older adults with and without audi

NADH against noise-induced hearing loss: Evidence from models of "temporary" and "permanent" deafness.

Exposure to different types of noise for varying durations can lead to damage in different parts of the auditory pathway, such as synapse and hair cell loss, resulting in temporary or permanent threshold shifts. Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) involves intricate mechanisms in its pathogenesis, with oxidative stress and glutamate excitotoxicity considered important factors. Currently, there is a lack of effective drugs for NIHL. This study exhibited noise-induced hidden hearing loss (NIHHL) and noise-induced permanent hearing loss in CBA/CaJ mouse models and found that pre-administration of N
