Use of pulsed shortwave diathermy and joint mobilization to increase ankle range of motion in the presence of surgical implanted metal: A case series.

STUDY DESIGN: Case series. BACKGROUND: Traditionally, all forms of diathermy have been contraindicated over metal implants. There is a lack of research-based evidence for harm regarding the use of pulsed shortwave diathermy (PSWD) over orthopedic metal implants. Because PSWD is an effective modality for deep heating, we investigated whether ankle range of motion (ROM) could improve with the cautious use of PSWD and joint mobilizations, despite orthopedic metal implants being in the treatment field. CASE DESCRIPTIONS: Four subjects presented with decreased ankle ROM due to extensive fractures…

[Experimental analysis of neutral, asymmetric and constraint liners for total hip replacement: investigation of range of motion and protection against joint instability].

AIM: Recurrent dislocation after total hip replacement is a severe complication, which requires specific treatment and implants. The purpose of the present study was to compare a constraint liner with an elevated rim and standard liner regarding their range of motion and dislocation stability. METHOD: With a test device, range of motion until impingement (ROM (Imp)) and dislocation (ROM (Lux)) were experimentally analyzed using the above-mentioned insert types of a commercial total hip system. On the basis of movement combinations associated with dislocation, the ROM was determined. Further m…

Demonstration of periventricular brain motion during a Valsalva maneuver: description of technique, evaluation in healthy volunteers and first results in hydrocephalic patients.

There has long been a need for a sensitive and predictive parameter in the evaluation of hydrocephalic patients. Our goal was to assess vent … by measuring lateral ventricular size over time. All volunteers showed marked periventricular brain motion. The lateral ventricular area was reduced under the Valsalva maneuver by an average of 18% (SD 7) in healthy volunteers, while remaining practically constant in the patient group. Differences were statistically significant with a p<0.0001. The Valsa …

Inertial representation of angular motion in the vestibular system of rhesus monkeys. II. Otolith-controlled transformation that depends on an intact cerebellar nodulus.

1. We recently studied the spatial representation of angular motion signals in rhesus monkeys by examining the orientation of postrotatory vestibuloocular responses during tilt of the head and body relative to gravity after constant-velocity rotation about an earth-vertical axis. We have reported that low-frequency angular motion signals in the vestibuloocular reflex (VOR) of rhesus monkeys are spatially transformed such that they remain invariant relative to gravity. In the present study we examine the properties of these inertial vestibular signals by employing similar stimulation conditions…

[Mechanical dynamic ankle passive motion for physical prevention of thrombosis? Changes in hemodynamics in the lower pressure system with new dynamic splints].

The use of mechanical ankle exercise devices with continuous passive motion (CPM) of the ankle joint can improve venous reflow in the lower limbs after operations. Duplex ultrasonography allows the observations of blood flow velocity and flow volume during continuous movement of the devices. We tested two different CPM devices for ankle movement in a preclinical study on 10 healthy, uninjured people and saw the following changes in the deep venous system in the common femoral vein: after 5 min of motion the velocity of the venous reflow was increased to 112.5% and the flow volume passing the f…

A biomechanical study of thoracolumbar spinal fractures with bone in the canal. Part II. The effect of flexion angulation, distraction, and shortening of the motion segment.

In the second part of this biomechanical study of thoracolumbar spinal fractures with bone in the neural canal contract force on the spinal cord--meningeal complex was measured with relation to varying fracture wedge depth, flexion angulations, and distraction and shortening of the fracture model motion segment. The removal of progressively deeper vertebral body wedges did not change the measured contact force/depth of penetration characteristics, however, the resistance to flexion angulation was decreased. Distraction of the motion segment an average of 5.2 mm increased significantly the cont…

[Prevention of motion sickness with a transdermal therapeutic system containing scopolamine. A randomized, comparative double-blind study in the German Federal Navy].

To test the prophylactic value of anti-motion sickness drugs, a randomized double-blind trial was undertaken on 46 young, healthy, male volunteer marines. Comparison was made between a transdermal therapeutic system (TTS) containing as the effective agent scopolamine (TTS-scopolamine) and proprietary meclozine tablets. An artificial "sea voyage" served to produce motion sickness, each subject sitting by himself on an artificially tilting "island", on two days for 30 minutes. Without treatment, 19 of the 46 subjects developed symptoms of motion sickness requiring treatment. After administration…

Comparison of SAF calculations using GATE/Geant4 and MCNPX: impact of respiratory and cardiac motion in a 4D Voxelized Phantom for internal dosimetry.

This study investigates Specific Absorbed Fractions (SAFs) for internal dosimetry using a dynamic 4D XCAT phantom to quantify the influence of physiological motion. The model incorporates 13 respiratory phases over a normal 5.2 s cycle, with voxel-based material definition, and additionally includes cardiac beating within the same framework. Respiratory motion was found to significantly affect lung dosimetry. The self-absorbed fraction in the lungs showed the largest variation, reaching 13.74% at 2.018 MeV. Cross-irradiation of nearby organs was also sensitive to breathing motion, with relativ…

A comparison of the mechanical properties of the deltoid and trapezius muscles and shoulder range of motion in competitive young swimmers across different swimming strokes.

BACKGROUND: Competitive swimming is a sport that places a high level of repetitive load on the shoulder complex and requires intensive use of upper extremity movements. Different swimming strokes may demonstrate distinct differences in shoulder joint biomechanics and muscle activation patterns, which may lead to stroke-specific adaptations in shoulder joint range of motion and the neuromechanical properties of muscles. However, studies examining shoulder joint range of motion together with the biomechanical properties of shoulder girdle muscles assessed by myotonometry according to swimming st…

A hydroxyapatite-based synthetic bone graft reduces intervertebral motion at 12 months, as measured by CT-RSA, in a porcine model of ACDF.

INTRODUCTION: Pseudarthrosis remains a significant complication after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF), often causing revision surgery. Synthetic bone grafts (SBGs) offer an alternative to autografts, but objective methods for assessing intervertebral motion (IVM) are needed. Computed tomography-based radiostereometric analysis (CT-RSA) enables precise measurement of cervical IVM. RESEARCH QUESTION: Does a hydroxyapatite-based SBG reduce cervical IVM compared with control in a porcine ACDF model measured by CT-RSA? MATERIAL AND METHODS: Six adult female mini-pigs underwent two-…
