Antimicrobial Envelopes for Cardiac Device Infection Prevention: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized and Matched Studies.

INTRODUCTION: Cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED)-associated infections are a significant procedural complication. Antibacterial envelopes have emerged as a potential strategy to mitigate this risk, though the evidence regarding their prognostic benefit remains inconclusive. OBJECTIVES: We performed a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and propensity score-matched cohorts evaluating the efficacy of the adjunctive use of antimicrobial envelopes in preventing CIED-related infections compared to standard prophylactic measures alone. METHODS: We searched through PubMed

A framework towards implementation of sequencing for antimicrobial-resistant and other health-care-associated pathogens.

Antimicrobial resistance continues to be a growing threat globally, specifically in health-care settings in which antimicrobial-resistant pathogens cause a substantial proportion of health-care-associated infections (HAIs). Next-generation sequencing (NGS) and the analysis of the data produced therein (ie, bioinformatics) represent an opportunity to enhance our capacity to address these threats. The 3rd Geneva Infection Prevention and Control Think Tank brought together experts to identify gaps, propose solutions, and set priorities for the use of NGS for HAIs and antimicrobial-resistant patho

Impact of infection prevention interventions on neonatal bloodstream infections and mortality in Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Bloodstream infections (BSIs) are a major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality in low-resource settings, yet most are preventable. However, few studies evaluated the effectiveness of multimodal interventions in preventing healthcare-associated BSIs (HA-BSIs) in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). METHODS: We conducted an implementation study in a NICU in Northern Ethiopia from January to June 2024, using a pre-and post-intervention design. Multimodal prevention strategies consisted of infection prevention and control (IPC) trai

Airborne Aspergillus fumigatus contamination in an intensive care unit: Detection, management and control.

Intensive care unit (ICU) patients are often extremely vulnerable to suffer an infection from airborne pathogens. Therefore, an environmental outbreak of Aspergillus fumigatus in an ICU should be handled in a concise and efficient way. In this short report, we describe an outbreak of A. fumigatus in the ICU of a Belgian secondary care hospital. Following initial detection of a humidity problem and airborne A. fumigatus, the department of infection prevention took urgent measures for damage control and resolution of the problem. As such a timely resolution has been provided, with assurance of a

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Syphilis Summit: Difficult Clinical and Patient Management Issues.

Despite over a century of clinical experience in diagnosing and managing patients with syphilis, many thorny clinical questions remain unanswered. We focus on several areas of uncertainty for the clinician: the role of serologic tests in diagnosing syphilis and assessing syphilis treatment responses, and the risk of neurosyphilis and ocular syphilis in patients with syphilis. We also address whether clinical approaches should differ in patients who are, and are not, infected with HIV. The current increases in syphilis rates in the United States and elsewhere underscore our urgent need to defin

Antimicrobial Stewardship in Neonates: Challenges and Opportunities.

Neonatal infections result in significant morbidity and mortality. Antibiotics are vital for the treatment of infections but disrupt the neonatal microbiome, put the infant at risk for an adverse drug reaction, and may lead to the development of antibiotic resistance. Immediately after birth, clinicians must determine which infants require empiric antibiotics. Online risk stratification tools may provide a superior approach to decision trees. In infants who require empiric therapy for early-onset sepsis, ampicillin and an aminoglycoside with dosing based on recent pharmacokinetic studies repre

A relationship between serological markers of chronic C. pneumoniae and CMV infection and hsp60 in patients with atherosclerotic carotid stenosis.

UNLABELLED: A number of epidemiological studies conducted over the last decade indicate a relationship between specific pathogen infections and the development of atherosclerosis, although no pathogenetic pathways connecting these two have been determined. Recent reports support the role of heat shock proteins (HSPs) in atherogenesis. The HSPs are also believed to be a link between the infection and the development of atherosclerotic lesions. THE AIMS OF STUDY: Immunohistochemical evaluation of carotid artery segments to show the relationship between the presence of heat shock proteins and the
