Nutrition and Gastrointestinal Dysmotility in Critically Ill Burn Patients: A Retrospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal (GI) dysmotility impedes nutrient delivery in critically ill patients with major burns. We aimed to quantify the incidence, timing, and factors associated with GI dysmotility and subsequent nutrition delivery. METHODS: A 10-year retrospective observational study included mechanically ventilated, adult, critically ill patients with ≥15% total body surface area (TBSA) burns receiving nutrition support. Patients with a single gastric residual volume ≥250 mL were categorized as having GI dysmotility. Daily medical and nutrition data were extracted for ≤14 days in the

The Effect of Fluid Overload on Attributable Morbidity after Cardiac Surgery: A Retrospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Although the detrimental effects of excessive perioperative fluid administration are generally well established, data in the setting of cardiac surgery remain less robust. METHODS: In this retrospective single-center observational study, the total fluid balance in the first 12 hours during and after surgery was evaluated. Primary endpoint was the relationship between total fluid balance and the incidence of prolonged mechanical ventilation. For this purpose, data were divided into quartiles (Q); prolonged mechanical ventilation and prolonged length of stay (LOS) in the ICU were

Feasibility of endoscopic submucosal dissection for colorectal neoplasia at anastomotic sites: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Metachronous colorectal lesions sometimes occur at anastomotic sites following colorectal surgery, which increases the risk of developing colorectal cancer. However, these lesions are difficult to treat even with minimally invasive methods such as endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD). Thus, we aimed to evaluate the outcomes of ESD for colorectal lesions at anastomotic sites following colorectal surgery. METHODS: We retrospectively investigated 11 patients with post-surgical colorectal lesions at anastomotic sites who later underwent ESD from May 2010 to April 2019 at Keio Univer

A retrospective cohort study reporting rituximab treatment for 33 patients with immunobullous disease.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune bullous disorders, encompassing pemphigus and pemphigoid diseases, are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. This is in part due to high cumulative doses of corticosteroids in combination with immunosuppressant agents used in traditional treatment regimes. Rituximab is an antiCD20 monoclonal antibody which can induce complete remission, but it is currently unlicensed in the UK and approved only after other treatments have failed. METHODS: We report a retrospective cohort study of 33 patients with pemphigus and pemphigoid diseases treated with rituximab fr

Child characteristics and early intervention referral and receipt of services: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Early Intervention (EI) is a federally mandated, state-administered system of care for children with developmental delays and disabilities under the age of three. Gaps exist in the process of accessing EI through pediatric primary care, and low rates of EI access are well documented and disproportionately affect poor and minority children. The aims of this paper are to examine child characteristics associated with gaps in EI (1) referral, (2) access and (3) service use. To our knowledge, this is the first study to leverage linked safety net health system pediatric primary care and
