A clinical-functional model of emergent vocal behaviour: an operations-phenomena framework for voice disorder classification and clinical intervention.

This paper proposes a clinical-functional framework of vocal behaviour based on a distinction between operations-controllable physiological parameters-and phenomena-emergent acoustic outcomes arising from their nonlinear interaction. Because the vocal organ functions as a nonlinear biological-acoustic system, qualities such as resonance, projection, and phonatory stability cannot be directly targeted; they emerge from coordinated operational conditions. Functional voice disorders are accordingly reinterpreted as emergent consequences of suboptimal operational configurations, reorienting clinic

Theoretical modeling and modal analysis of multi-element coupled transducers.

Low-frequency transducers are considerably smaller than the wavelength. When multiple low-frequency transducers are closely packed, they couple with the surrounding water and form a transducer-water-transducer coupling structure called multi-element coupled transducers (MCT). This study presents a theoretical model of the MCT based on radiation and mutual radiation theory and analyzes it under multiple resonance frequencies and vibration modes. The MCT comprising N single-degree-of-freedom elements possesses N resonance frequencies and corresponding vibration modes, and the resonance frequency

Identifying multimodal digital features of insomnia using an app in Hong Kong: An ecological momentary assessment study.

BACKGROUND: Digital phenotyping of insomnia remains underexplored, particularly in the context of depression, despite the high comorbidity between these two conditions. This study aims to investigate the associations between insomnia and multimodal features using active data collection during awake states, including facial expressions, acoustic characteristics, and language use. METHODS: A sample of 92 participants was recruited, 39 % of them presented with clinical insomnia as measured by Insomnia Severity Index. Multimodal features were extracted from video-taped mood diaries recorded for o

Molecular Insights into Interactions between Ofloxacin and Ionic Micelles.

The growing antimicrobial resistance presents a challenge in developing new potent drugs, but this effort is hindered by a lack of information regarding how these new drugs would behave in biomembranes. Surfactants are considered mimetic models for biomembranes and can be used to study drug-membrane interactions. In this study, we used two well-known surfactants-cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate-as model membranes to investigate their interaction with the antimicrobial drug ofloxacin (OFL). These interactions were studied using volumetric and acoustic m

Molecular logic for cellular specializations that initiate the auditory parallel processing pathways.

The cochlear nuclear complex (CN), the starting point for all central auditory processing, encompasses a suite of neuronal cell types highly specialized for neural coding of acoustic signals. However, the molecular logic governing these specializations remains unknown. By combining single-nucleus RNA sequencing and Patch-seq analysis, we reveal a set of transcriptionally distinct cell populations encompassing all previously observed types and discover multiple hitherto unknown subtypes with anatomical and physiological identity. The resulting comprehensive cell-type taxonomy reconciles anatomi

Ppb-Level Photoacoustic Detection of Chloroform Using Four-Microphone Array.

The photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) system commonly enhances the efficiency of optical-acoustic-electrical energy conversion by increasing the laser power, optimizing the resonance characteristics of the photoacoustic cell (PAC), and improving the sensitivity of acoustic sensors. However, conventional systems using a single-microphone or a dual-microphone differential setup for point sampling of the photoacoustic signal fail to account for its spatial distribution, leading to a loss of spatial gain. Drawing on microphone array theory derived from sonar technology, this study, for the first ti

Twin vocal folds as a novel evolutionary adaptation for vocal communications in lemurs.

Primates have varied vocal repertoires to communicate with conspecifics and sometimes other species. The larynx has a central role in vocal source generation, where a pair of vocal folds vibrates to modify the air flow. Here, we show that Madagascan lemurs have a unique additional pair of folds in the vestibular region, parallel to the vocal folds. The additional fold has a rigid body of a vocal muscle branch and it is covered by a stratified squamous epithelium, equal to those of the vocal fold. Such anatomical features support the hypothesis that it also vibrates in a manner like the vibrati

The auditory P2 is influenced by pitch changes but not pitch strength and consists of two separate subcomponents.

The P2 component of the auditory evoked potential has previously been shown to depend on the acoustic stimulus properties and prior exposure to the materials. Here, we show that it is also affected by acoustic changes, as P2 amplitudes were strongly enhanced in response to voice pitch changes with a stepwise pattern compared to dynamic pitch changes typical for natural speech, and also reflected the magnitude of these pitch changes. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that neither the P2 nor any other component is affected by the harmonicity of the materials. Despite no prior exposure and a weaker

Signal-in-noise detection across the lifespan in a mouse model of presbycusis.

The auditory system is constantly tasked with detecting acoustic cues in complex auditory environments. Difficulty hearing speech in noise, largely a result of energetic masking, is a major communication complaint of the elderly, which impacts a third of the global population over 65. The neural mechanisms responsible for processing sound in background noise and subsequently achieving release from energetic masking remain obscure. Furthermore, the senescence of signal-in-noise detection is poorly understood, a phenomenon which could have a myriad of clinical implications. We tested over 300 CB

Sound production biomechanics in three-spined toadfish and potential functional consequences of swim bladder morphology in the Batrachoididaea).

The relationship between sound complexity and the underlying morphology and physiology of the vocal organ anatomy is a fundamental component in the evolution of acoustic communication, particularly for fishes. Among vertebrates, the mammalian larynx and avian syrinx are the best-studied vocal organs, and their ability to produce complex vocalizations has been modeled. The range and complexity of the sounds in mammalian lineages have been attributed, in part, to the bilateral nature of the vocal anatomy. Similarly, we hypothesize that the bipartite swim bladder of some species of toadfish (fami

Multimodal assessment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease with transmission-reflection optoacoustic ultrasound.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an umbrella term referring to a group of conditions associated to fat deposition and damage of liver tissue. Early detection of fat accumulation is essential to avoid progression of NAFLD to serious pathological stages such as liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Methods: We exploited the unique capabilities of transmission-reflection optoacoustic ultrasound (TROPUS), which combines the advantages of optical and acoustic contrasts, for an early-stage multi-parametric assessment of NAFLD in mice. Results: The multispectral optoacoustic imagi

Application Progress of Objective Audiological Detection Techniques in Forensic Clinical Medicine.

The qualitative, quantitative, and localization analysis of hearing loss is one of the important contents of forensic clinical research and identification. Pure-tone audiometry is the "gold standard" for hearing loss assessment, but it is affected by the subjective cooperation of the assessed person. Due to the complexity of the auditory pathway and the diversity of hearing loss, the assessment of hearing loss requires the combination of various subjective and objective audiometric techniques, along with comprehensive evaluation based on the case situation, clinical symptoms, and other examina

Time-domain and frequency-domain effects of tensor tympani contraction on middle ear sound transmission in gerbil.

The middle ear is a high-fidelity, broadband impedance transformer that transmits acoustic stimuli at the eardrum to the inner ear. It is home to the two smallest muscles in mammalian species, which modulate middle ear transmission. Of this pair, the function of the tensor tympani muscle (TTM) has remained obscure. We investigated the acoustic effects of this muscle in young adult gerbils. We measured changes in middle ear vibration produced by pulse-train-elicited TTM contraction - in the time-domain with a click stimulus and in the frequency-domain with multitone zwuis stimuli. In our click

Bone conduction pathways confer directional cues to salamanders.

Sound and vibration are generated by mechanical disturbances within the environment, and the ability to detect and localize these acoustic cues is generally important for survival, as suggested by the early emergence of inherently directional otolithic ears in vertebrate evolutionary history. However, fossil evidence indicates that the water-adapted ear of early terrestrial tetrapods lacked specialized peripheral structures to transduce sound pressure (e.g. tympana). Therefore, early terrestrial hearing should have required nontympanic (or extratympanic) mechanisms for sound detection and loca

Biomimetic Tympanic Membrane Replacement Made by Melt Electrowriting.

The tympanic membrane (TM) transfers sound waves from the air into mechanical motion for the ossicular chain. This requires a high sensitivity to small dynamic pressure changes and resistance to large quasi-static pressure differences. The TM achieves this by providing a layered structure of about 100µm in thickness, a low flexural stiffness, and a high tensile strength. Chronically infected middle ears require reconstruction of a large area of the TM. However, current clinical treatment can cause a reduction in hearing. With the novel additive manufacturing technique of melt electrowriting (M

Necessities, opportunities, and challenges for tympanic membrane perforation scaffolding-based bioengineering.

Tympanic membrane (TM) perforation is a global clinical dilemma. It occurs as a consequence of object penetration, blast trauma, barotrauma, and middle ear diseases. TM perforation may lead to otitis media, retraction pockets, cholesteatoma, and conductive deafness. Molecular therapies may not be suitable to treat perforation because there is no underlying tissue matrix to support epithelium bridging. Chronic perforations are usually reconstructed with autologous grafts via surgical myringoplasty. Surgical treatment is uncomfortable for the patients. The grafting materials are not perfect beca

The pecularities of ultrasonic equipment design for stabilization of dispersed structures of alumosilicic reagents for wastewater treatment.

Acoustic fields formed during operation of ultrasonic reactors with waveguides of following types: rod-type, cylindrical with rectangular protrusions and tubular were calculated and measured. The influence of distribution of acoustic fields arising from the operation of waveguide systems of three different types on the efficiency of ultrasonic activation of alumosilicic flocculant-coagulant and magnetite intended for water purification was investigated. It was shown that regardless of the equipment used on an industrial scale it is possible to reactivate the alumosilicic flocculant-coagulant e

A new device for real-time peroperative monitoring of ossicular chain reconstruction during middle ear surgery.

To limit functional surgical failure and reduce the rate of revision surgery in case of surgical ossicular chain reconstruction, a piezoelectric device was developed for assessment of ossicular chain vibrations during the middle ear surgery. The device resembled a pen and consisted of a reusable main body and a disposable sensitive head including piezoelectric polymer sensor. Almost all of components of the device were made of polymer for light weight and for acoustic impedance matching to the middle ear system. Several frequencies can be analyzed simultaneously and several measures can be tak
