The central site of the sympatho-inhibitory action of 5-hydroxytryptamine in the cat.

The aim of this study was to determine the site in the CNS at which 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) inhibits efferent sympathetic nerve activity in the cat. 5-Hydroxytryptamine (3 and 10 micrograms/kg), given into the lateral cerebral ventricle, produced immediate non dose related increases in mean blood pressure (MBP), heart rate (HR) and renal nerve activity (RNA). Larger doses (30 and 100 micrograms/kg i.c.v.) produced gradual decreases in blood pressure, heart rate and renal nerve activity, which did not occur when access of the drug to the fourth ventricle was prevented. Administration of 5-HT…

Cardiovascular and respiratory effects of beta-endorphin in anesthetized and conscious rats.

This study deals with the effects of beta-endorphin on blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory frequency in anesthetized and conscious rats after both peripheral and central administration. Intravenous injection of beta-endorphin (40 and 160 micrograms/kg) in urethane-anesthetized rats resulted in a prolonged decrease in blood pressure, which, after the higher dose, was accompanied by bradycardia. In the pentobarbitone-anesthetized animals the same doses of beta-endorphin caused a small rise in blood pressure without affecting heart rate. No effect on respiratory frequency was observed. In…

Effects of acetylpromazine on the hemodynamics of the equine metatarsal artery, as determined by two-dimensional real-time and pulsed Doppler ultrasonography.

Heart rate, blood velocity, volumetric blood flow, and arterial diameter for 10 horses given acetylpromazine were determined from measurements of the dorsal metatarsal artery 3 (the great metatarsal artery), using 2-dimensional real-time and gated pulsed Doppler ultrasonography. Acetylpromazine induced significant increases in arterial diameter (P less than 0.01) and volumetric flow rate (P less than 0.05)--all compatible with adrenergic blockade. There was a trend indicating that there was increased blood velocity. Heart rate was unchanged.

Cardiac Enlargement in the Chick Embryo Induced by Hypothermic Incubation Is Due to a Combination of Hyperplasia and Hypertrophy of Cardiomyocytes.

Hypothermic incubation of chicken eggs leads to smaller embryos with enlarged hearts, originally described as hypertrophic. Over the years, … sia is the predominant response mechanism in this volume-overload model; mechanistically, decreased heart rate at lower temperature increases the end-diastolic and stroke volume, minimizing the drop in cardiac output through the Frank- Starling mechanism.

Longitudinal hemodynamic measurements in swine heart failure using a fully implantable telemetry system.

Chronic monitoring of heart rate, blood pressure, and flow in conscious free-roaming large animals can offer considerable opportunity to understand the progression of cardiovascular diseases and can test new diagnostics and therapeutics. The objective of this study was to demonstrate the feasibility of chronic, simultaneous measurement of several hemodynamic parameters (left ventricular pressure, systemic pressure, blood flow velocity, and heart rate) using a totally implantable multichannel telemetry system in swine heart failure models. Two solid-state blood pressure sensors were inserted in…

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome: "Which is the best operative strategy?".

Therapy for the hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is still under debate. We report about our experience in the treatment of this cardiac malformation using heart transplantation and Norwood palliation. From 1988 to 1997 a total number of 30 infants with hypoplastic left heart underwent heart transplantation. Mean age at transplantation was 66 days. Mean waiting time was 53 days. Donor-recipient weight ratio ranged from 0.6 to 3.9. There were 6 early hospital deaths and one late death until now. Causes of death were rejection (3), right heart failure (2), infection (1) and multi system org

Cardioautonomic control in healthy singleton and twin pregnancies.

In conjunction with significant cardiovascular adaptation, changes in cardioautonomic balance, specifically greater sympathetic activation and vagal withdrawal, are considered normal adaptations to healthy singleton pregnancy. Cardiovascular adaptation to twin pregnancy is more profound than that of singleton pregnancies; however, the changes in cardioautonomic control during multifetal gestation are unknown. To address this gap, beat-by-beat blood pressure (photoplethysmography) and heart rate (lead II electrocardiogram) were measured continuously in 25 twin pregnancies and 25 singleton pregn…

Autonomic effects of spironolactone and MR blockers in heart failure.

Neurohormonal dysfunction is an important and potentially modifiable part of the disease process of heart failure. In this review we will discuss the ways in which the autonomic system is deranged in congestive cardiac failure and the different ways we have of monitoring these abnormalities i.e.: heart rate variability, plasma norephinephrine activity, MIBG scanning, heart rate turbulence, baroreceptor function and briefly, microneurographic techniques and QT interval analysis. We will then discuss the direct effects of aldosterone and of aldosterone blockade on some of these parameters. We co…

The association of congenital ptosis and congenital heart disease.

Congenital ptosis and congenital heart disease are known to occur simultaneously in the presence of several well-recognized clinical syndromes. We report seven cases of documented, structural congenital heart defects found among 156 consecutive congenital ptosis patients operated at the Wills Eye Hospital. The possibility that the concurrence found in the patients was a manifestation of a dysmorphic syndrome was carefully excluded by observers skilled in the recognition of such anomalies. The observed rate of congenital heart disease, in otherwise normal congenital ptosis patients, was five ti

Cardiovascular Autonomic Dysfunction in Late-Stage Lyme Disease: A Comprehensive Autonomic Assessment.

Lyme disease, caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, may lead to persistent complications, including autonomic nervous system dysfunction. Although postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome is frequently associated with orthostatic intolerance in Lyme disease, broader autonomic impairment remains insufficiently characterized. This cross-sectional study included 324 participants: 233 patients with late-stage Lyme disease and 91 healthy controls. All participants underwent cardiovascular autonomic reflex testing, beat-to-beat heart rate variability analysis, baroreflex assessment, 24-hour Ho…

The bradycardic agent ivabradine decreases conduction velocity in the AV node and in the ventricles in-vivo.

Ivabradine blocks hyperpolarisation-activated cyclic nucleotide-gated (HCN) channels, thereby lowering the heart rate, an action that is used clinically for the treatment of heart failure and angina pectoris. We and others have shown previously that ivabradine, in addition to its HCN channel blocking activity, also inhibits voltage-gated Na channels in vitro at concentrations that may be clinically relevant. Such action may reduce conduction velocity in cardiac atria and ventricles. Here, we explore the effect of administration of ivabradine on parameters of ventricular conduction and repolari…

Neither a Multi-Ingredient Pre-Workout Supplement nor Caffeine Were Effective at Improving Markers of Blood Flow or Upper-Body Resistance Exercise Performance.

Few studies have measured the effects of multi-ingredient pre-workout supplements on blood flow or heart rate variability or have compared a multi-ingredient pre-workout supplement to a matched single ingredient. This study examined the effects of a multi-ingredient pre-workout supplement, an equivalent amount of caffeine, and placebo on markers of resistance training performance, blood flow, blood pressure, and heart rate variability. The study utilized a randomized, placebo-controlled, repeated-measures, crossover design. Twelve resistance-trained males (22.75 ± 4.51 yrs; 183.4 ± 7.37 cm; 91…

An analysis of stereotypical motor movements and cardiovascular coupling in individuals on the autism spectrum.

One of the core diagnostic features of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is engagement in stereotypical motor movements, although the etiology of this repetitive behavior is unknown. Since the 1960s, it has been hypothesized that stereotypical motor movements serve a homeostatic regulation function, and thereby a putative coupling mechanism to cardiovascular arousal. However, to date, surprisingly few reports explicitly assess cardio-somatic coupling and stereotypical motor movements. The present exploratory study investigates coupling of stereotypical body rocking and hand flapping to heart rate…
