Buffering the effects of work stress on anxiety and depression: a moderated mediation model of physical activity enjoyment and sleep disturbance in China.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate the pathways linking work stress to anxiety and depression among a sample of full-time white-collar professionals (spanning various industries and organizational hierarchies) in China’s first-tier cities and to test the buffering role of physical activity enjoyment in this adverse process. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 1,546 professionals in Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. A moderated mediation model was tested using the PROCESS macro (Models 4 and 59) to examine the mediating role of sleep disturbance and the moderating role

[The role of the glymphatic system in the development of chronopathological disorders in patients after surgery with prolonged anesthesia].

The glymphatic system, which provides clearance for CNS metabolites, plays a key role in maintaining brain homeostasis, especially during sleep. Its dysfunction induced by prolonged general anesthesia can cause persistent postoperative sleep disorders. The paper describes in detail the pathophysiological mechanisms of this process, including the inhibition of aquaporin-4 activity, the development of oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, as well as the alteration of neurovascular and circadian regulation. Particular attention is paid to the effect of anesthetics on the suprachiasmatic nucleus

Burden and disutility of sleep disturbance and early morning OFF symptoms in people with advancing Parkinson's disease: a vignette-based approach using the EQ-5D-5L.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms that fluctuate as oral medication wears off, causing periods when symptoms return (“OFF” time) and periods of control (“ON” time). These fluctuations often occur at night and early morning. Sleep disturbance (SD) and early-morning OFF time (EMO) have been shown to decrease health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in people with PD (PwP). However, limited evidence exists on how these symptoms impact health state utility values (HSUVs) used in economic modeling. This study aimed to estimate the burden and disutil

Network analysis of anxiety, depression, self-affirmation, and sleep disturbances in general hospital patients: a cross-sectional study.

Sleep disorders are prevalent among general hospital patients, significantly impairing quality of life and exacerbating existing medical conditions, leading to prolonged hospital stays and increased costs. Current treatments primarily rely on pharmacological and psychological interventions, often neglecting the complex interactions between sleep disorders and emotional disturbances such as anxiety and depression, as well as psychological traits like self-affirmation. This study aims to address this gap by systematically exploring the multidimensional factors influencing sleep disorders and elu

Sleep disturbance in CKD: patient‑prioritized outcomes, management, and perceptions - a multicenter mixed-methods study in Australia.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbances are common in chronic kidney disease (CKD), yet patient priorities, reporting behaviors, and experiences of sleep management remain poorly understood. This study explored perceived causes of sleep disturbance, patient-prioritized sleep outcomes, and experiences of reporting and managing sleep problems. METHODS: A multicenter, convergent mixed-methods study of adults with CKD stage 4-5, including those receiving kidney replacement therapy. Participants were recruited from four nephrology units across three Australian states. Survey data were analyzed using descri

Cognitive impairment in cervical dystonia: core clinical feature or secondary effect related to non-motor symptoms?

AIM OF THE STUDY: To investigate subtle cognitive dysfunction in patients with cervical dystonia (CD) as a potential independent non-motor feature of the disease or as a consequence of interactions between motor and other non-motor symptoms (NMS). CLINICAL RATIONALE FOR THE STUDY: Cognitive impairment represents one of the most common non-motor symptoms in patients with cervical dystonia. However, the interrelations between cognitive dysfunction, motor symptoms, and other non-motor symptoms remain insufficiently explored. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients with CD (n = 34) underwent comprehensiv

Aquaporin-4 in Narcolepsy Type 1: Investigation of Perivascular Fluid Movement in Sleep Disorders.

Narcolepsy type 1 (NT1) is caused by the loss of hypocretin-1 leading to excessive daytime sleepiness and cataplexy. Additionally, disrupted nighttime sleep has become an increasingly recognized feature of NT1. As the glymphatic fluid movement has been linked to sleep architecture, we investigated cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) Aquaporin-4 (AQP4) as potential biomarker for perivascular fluid exchange processes in 133 NT1 patients, 145 patients with other sleeping disorders, and 62 controls. NT1 patients showed lower CSF AQP4 concentrations compared to both control groups (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.01).

Advances in Therapeutic Options for Pulmonary and Sleep Disorders in Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) Patients: A Narrative Review.

Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) are a group of inherited lysosomal storage genetic disorders that affect the body's ability to break down glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) due to the deficiency of required enzymes. This leads to depositions of these GAGs in various tissues and organs resulting in multi-systemic manifestations including pulmonary and sleep related issues. In recent years, there have been significant advancements in therapeutic options and supportive management which have led to the overall improvement in respiratory care, culminating in improved quality of life for MPS patients. Management

Prevalence and associations of self-reported sleep problems in a large sample of patients with Parkinson's disease.

Sleep problems are important comorbid features of, and risk factors for, neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease (PD). To assess the prevalence and associations of sleep problems in patients with PD we analysed data from almost 54,000 participants in the Fox Insight study, including data from 38,588 patients with PD. Sleep problems are common in PD, with ~84% of respondents with PD reporting difficulty falling or staying asleep. Experiences of insomnia, restless leg syndrome, vivid dreams, acting out dreams, and the use of sleep medication are over-represented in patients with P

Longitudinal Association Between Depressive Symptoms and Sleep Problems in Adolescents Following a Natural Disaster: Understanding the Role of Psychological Inflexibility.

Previous studies have investigated the temporal associations between depressive symptoms and sleep problems in traumatized adolescents. However, controversy remains regarding the directionality and underlying mechanisms of these associations, because within- and between-individual effects have not been differentiated. To examine this issue, the current study used the random-intercept cross lagged panel model (RI-CLPM) to assess the temporal associations between depressive symptoms, sleep problems and psychological inflexibility in adolescents following Typhoon Lekima. A sample of 1,341 adolesc

Infant Colic Symptoms and Amino Acid Formula: Insights from a Prospective Cohort Study.

Background/Objectives: Infant functional disorders, including colic, irritability, and sleep disturbances, often overlap with symptoms of cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA). While extensively hydrolyzed formulas are commonly used to address these issues, the short-term efficacy of amino acid formulas (AAF) for managing colic remains understudied. This secondary analysis of a previously published prospective cohort, the largest of its kind in the United States, evaluated the short-term impact of AAF in improving colic and associated symptoms in infants under six months of age with suspected CMPA

Perioperative sleep disturbances in total knee arthroplasty: incidence, mechanisms, and management strategies.

Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is an effective treatment for end-stage knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Previous studies have found that KOA patients commonly experience sleep disorders during the perioperative period of TKA, which can significantly affect postoperative recovery, pain management, and quality of life. Sleep disturbances during the perioperative period of TKA are a complex issue influenced by multiple factors. Although clinical interventions have shown promising efficacy, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear and require further research. This article reviews the specific causes of

Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide (CGRP)-Expressing Neurons in the External Lateral Parabrachial Area Regulate Pain-Induced Sleep Disturbances.

Given that sleep and pain are bidirectionally related, we investigated the neural circuits underlying pain-induced sleep disturbances using two acute pain models. Activation of nociceptors in acute inflammatory pain (AIP) significantly reduced sleep by 45-50% in the first 6 h, with reduced sleep spindle density for 1-3 h post-AIP. Additionally, an "optogenetic pain (Opto-Pain)" model is implemented to produce acute peripheral pain-induced awakenings that reduced sleep comparable to AIP. Both pain models are used to test the role of wake-promoting neurons in the parabrachial nucleus that expres

Influence of autonomic dysfunction on sleep disturbance in drug-naïve patients with Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Sleep disturbance (SD) is a common non-motor symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD), and autonomic dysfunction is believed to play a key role in its worsening. However, the independent contribution of each autonomic domain to SD remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the influence of autonomic dysfunction on SD in drug-naïve patients with PD. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 89 drug-naïve patients with PD. SD was assessed using the PD Sleep Scale-version-2 (PDSS-2) and Rapid Eye Movement Sleep Behavior Disorder Screening Questionnaire. Autonomic symptoms were evalua
