Techniques for Safe Removal of Spinal Cord Stimulation Paddle Leads.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a safe neuromodulatory treatment used to treat failed back surgery syndrome, chronic neuropathic pain, and complex regional pain syndrome. Despite its efficacy, some patients fail to achieve pain relief and elect to undergo removal of SCS paddle leads. The safety and best practices of these procedures have not been defined. OBJECTIVE: In this article, we describe our technique and complication rate in a series of SCS paddle removals. METHODS: All patients who underwent SCS paddle removal at the Albany Medical Center between 2011 and 2020 were iden

Pharynx volume derived from three-dimensional computed tomography is associated with difficult intubation in spinal deformity surgery: A retrospective cohort study.

Spinal abnormality surgery, including surgery for ankylosing spondylitis and idiopathic scoliosis, can present significant challenges to anesthesiologists because of the potential difficult airway. The bedside screening tests routinely used to detect difficult airways are highly variable. Pharynx volume calculated using three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) may play a role in predicting difficult airways. We conducted a retrospective cohort study on patients (aged ≥14 years) who received orthopedic surgery for ankylosing spondylitis/idiopathic scoliosis under general anesthesia. Volu

Pancoast tumor presenting with multiple joint pains: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pancoast tumors represent a unique subset of lung cancers wherein a primary neoplasm arises in the lung's apex and invades the surrounding soft tissues. One of the main challenges in the diagnosis and treatment of these apical lung cancers is that they are usually not visualized on initial chest x-ray and, by the time the patient presents with symptoms, the tumor has almost always invaded nearby structures. CASE PRESENTATION: Herein we report a case of a 58-year-old nonsmoking African American male who presented to the neurology clinic with a history of multiple chronic joint pain

Measuring Knee Joint Laxity in Three Degrees-of-Freedom In Vivo Using a Robotics- and Image-Based Technology.

Accurate and reliable information about three-dimensional (3D) knee joint laxity can prevent misdiagnosis and avoid incorrect treatments. Nevertheless, knee laxity assessments presented in the literature suffer from significant drawbacks such as soft tissue artifacts, restricting the knee within the measurement, and the absence of quantitative knee ligament property information. In this study, we demonstrated the applicability of a novel methodology for measuring 3D knee laxity, combining robotics- and image-based technology. As such technology has never been applied to healthy living subjects

Silent advanced large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma with synchronous adenocarcinoma of the colon: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) accounts for about 0.25% of colorectal cancer patients. Furthermore, synchronous LCNEC and adenocarcinoma coexistence in the colon is very rare. LCNEC are usually aggressive and have a poor prognosis. Usually, colorectal LCNEC patients complain of abdominal symptoms such as pain, diarrhea or hematochezia because it is often diagnosed as an advanced disease that accompanies metastatic lesions. CASE SUMMARY: We describe a case of relatively asymptomatic synchronous LCNEC and colon adenocarcinoma. A 62-year-old male patient visited our hosp

Diode laser-assisted transcanal endoscopic removal of an aural polyp in the external auditory canal of a dog.

BACKGROUND: In humans, aural polyps comprise fibrovascular tissue covered by the respiratory epithelium. Aural polyps with ciliated epithelium are common in cats but are rarely reported in dogs. In a previous case, a mass filled the tympanic cavity alone, and it was surgically removed. OBJECTIVES: To report a case of a canine aural polyp with ciliated epithelium extending from the dorsal tympanic cavity to the external auditory canal with detailed otological features and to demonstrate the usefulness of the transcanal endoscopic procedure (TEP) with a diode laser as a less-invasive therapy.
