Ki-67 and MCM-2 in dental follicle and odontogenic cysts: the effects of inflammation on proliferative markers.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether there is any association between inflammation and the expression of markers of cell cycle entry (Ki-67 and MCM-2) in dental follicle (DF) of asymptomatic impacted teeth and odontogenic cysts. The study consisted of 70 DFs and 20 odontogenic cysts (radicular cyst (RC), dentigerous cyst (DC) and keratocytic odontogenic tumor (KCOT) located at posterior mandibular region. Histological findings of inflammation for all specimen and mucous cell prosoplasia, squamous metaplasia, glandular epithelium for all DFs were stained with hematoxyline and eosin,

Computer-assisted surgery with markerless augmented reality for the surgical removal of mandibular odontogenic cysts: report of two clinical cases.

Odontogenic cysts are commonly seen in clinical practice. Surgical enucleation of these cysts becomes challenging when they form adjacent to anatomically important structures. Recently, computer-assisted surgery using computer-aided preoperative simulation and augmented reality (AR) has been applied in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The authors have introduced a new AR system that eliminates the need for markers and uses image recognition of the teeth to overlay the surgical field with preoperative surgical simulation images. This report describes two cases of cystectomy performed using an AR

Ectopic mandibular third molar associated with cystic lesion and extraoral approach: case report.

Impacted mandibular third molars are classified by its relation with the second molars and with the ascending ramus of the mandible. Ectopic third molars do not obey this classification, being possibly found in the condylar region, in the ascending ramus of the mandible, in the coronoid process or in the base of the mandible. This article aim to present a case of an ectopic mandibular third molar associated with a dentigerous cyst that was removed using a Risdon's approach. A 49-year-old male patient was referred, after a radiographic finding, for evaluation of the lower right third molar (48)

Enlarged follicles and temporomandibular joint abnormalities in mucolipidosis Type III.

Mucolipidosis Type III, or pseudo-Hurler polydystrophy, is a rare genetic abnormality, the result of a mutation to one of two genes that encode the hexameric protein N-acetylglucosaminyl-1-phosphotransferase (Glc-NAc-PT). The abnormality results in the accumulation of unprocessed macromolecules in cell and tissue compartments throughout the body. In this case report, we describe the clinical and radiographic findings of a 15-year-old male with this disorder. He presented with bilateral ectopically developing mandibular molar teeth with enlarged follicles and multiple joint involvement, includi

Development of odontoma-like malformation in the permanent dentition caused by intrusion of primary incisor--a case report.

A case is presented of a 10-year-old girl, referred for consultation for failure of the maxillary central incisor to erupt. At 18 months, the patient underwent intrusion of the right central primary incisor, which re-erupted several months later. Radiographic examination revealed a complex odontoma-like malformation located next to the floor of the nose, away from the permanent incisors. Clinical examination revealed space loss of the corresponding permanent incisor and severe hypoplasia of the permanent right lateral incisor. Because of its deep location, it was decided not to remove the odon

Anterior maxillary supernumerary teeth: a clinical and radiographic study.

Clinical records and radiographs of 90 patients with 113 anterior maxillary supernumerary teeth (mesiodens) have been evaluated. Although uncommon, mesiodentes are the most frequent supernumerary teeth and may disturb the eruption and/or position of the adjacent permanent incisors. Clinical and radiographic examination may disclose the number, direction and location of mesiodentes and their effects on neighbouring teeth. In the present study the majority of the supernumerary teeth lay palatal to the central incisors. Complete or partial eruption of a mesiodens was rare, hence the importance of

Adenoid Ameloblastoma: The Newly Recognized Odontogenic Tumor - A Case Report.

Adenoid ameloblastoma is a newly recognized epithelial odontogenic tumor. Herein, we present the case of a 24-year-old male patient who exhibited swelling in the anterior region and right hemi-mandible. Computed tomography demonstrated the presence of a hypodense osteolytic lesion associated with an impacted tooth. Based on the clinical hypotheses of the dentigerous cyst, odontogenic keratocyst, and ameloblastoma, an incisional biopsy was performed, and the diagnosis of ameloblastoma was rendered. A surgical resection of the tumor was performed. Histopathological examination of the specimen re

Schwartz-Jampel syndrome: a review of the literature and case report.

Schwartz-Jampel syndrome (SJS) is a rare autosomal recessive skeletal dysplasia associated with myotonia. The manifestations of SJS include short stature, blepharophimosis, and skeletal anomalies. The combination of skeletal and muscular abnormalities may result in oro-dental manifestations such as atypical facies, with micrognathia, microstomia, pursed lips, crossbite, cleft palate, as well as mandibular hypoplasia, the risk of dentigerous cysts, and impacted teeth. The use of general anesthesia in patients with SJS is dangerous, as there is a risk of malignant hyperthermia. The purpose of th

Immunohistochemical evaluation of inducible nitric oxide synthase in the epithelial lining of odontogenic cysts: A qualitative and quantitative analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The three common odontogenic cysts include radicular cysts (RCs), dentigerous cysts (DCs), and odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs). Among these 3 cysts, OKC is recently been classified as benign keratocystic odontogenic tumor attributing to its aggressive behavior, recurrence rate, and malignant potential. The present study involved qualitative and quantitative analysis of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression in epithelial lining of RCs, DCs, and OKCs, compare iNOS expression in epithelial linings of all the 3 cysts and determined overexpression of iNOS in OKCs which migh

Ameloblastoma in young persons: a clinicopathologic analysis and etiologic investigation.

Ameloblastoma, an odontogenic tumor of ectodermal origin, has been reported to arise, on rare occasions, in a primordial or dentigerous cyst of a young person. Numerous authors have suggested differing nomenclatures for these ameloblastomas (e.g., mural, unicystic, monocystic, intracystic, cystogenic, cystic, plexiform unicystic) and have sought to describe and classify the clinical and histopathologic features. These tumors have been characterized as a distinct variant exhibiting less aggressive behavior and a lower rate of recurrence than conventional ameloblastoma. Furthermore, various etio

Benign cysts and tumors of the paranasal sinuses.

To thoroughly understand the biology of any lesion and render the appropriate management, clear and accurate definitions are paramount. For benign cysts and tumors of the oral maxillofacial region, an accurate depiction of these lesions needs to be elucidated to provide both the treating surgeon and the patient with a clear understanding of the course of treatment and the outcome.

Involvement of tryptase-positive mast cells and angiogenesis in the growth of inflammatory odontogenic cysts.

Inflammatory periapical lesions are characterized by infiltration of different immune cell types, the functions of which depend on an effective vascular network. This study aimed to evaluate the mast cells density (MCD) in inflamatory odontogenic cysts capsules concerning microvascular density (MVD), microvascular area (MVA), and microvascular perimeter (MVP), and correlate such findings with the type of lesion, intensity of the inflammatory infiltrate, and thickness of the epithelial lining. Twenty inflamatory dentigerous cysts (IDCs), twenty radicular cysts (RCs), and twenty residual radicul

Toll-like receptor 4 expression in the epithelium of inflammatory periapical lesions. An immunohistochemical study.

Toll-like receptors (TLR) are essential for the innate immune response against invading pathogens and have been described in immunocompetent cells of areas affected by periapical disease. Besides initiating the inflammatory response, they also directly regulate epithelial cell proliferation and survival in a variety of settings. This study evaluates the in situ expression of TLR4 in periapical granulomas (PG) and radicular cysts, focusing on the epithelial compartment. Twenty-one periapical cysts (PC) and 10 PG were analyzed; 7 dentigerous non-inflamed follicular cyst (DC) served as control. T

Minimally Invasive Treatment for Hard Palate-Invading Maxillary Keratocystic Odontogenic Tumor.

Keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT) is one of the benign developmental odontogenic cystic lesions arising from impacted teeth. In comparison to other odontogenic cysts, such as radicular cysts and dentigerous cysts, KCOT is known to be more aggressive and is associated with a relatively high recurrence rate. Traditionally, KCOT has been treated with total resection through sublabial incision. Marsupialization is advocated to reduce surgical invasion. However in all the cases, marsupialization was performed in the oral cavity. With the recent development of appropriate instruments and the end
