Percutaneous coronary revascularization is rarely complicated by infection. Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a severe, deep-seated, potentially life-threatening infection of fascia and subcutaneous tissues. We report herein 2 cases of NF in patients undergoing percutaneous transluminal coronary revascularization for treatment of acute coronary syndrome. These are the first 2 reported cases of NF associated with percutaneous coronary revascularization.

Aeromonas hydrophila infection has been described as the cause of necrotizing fasciitis in patients with suppressed immune systems, burns, and trauma in an aquatic setting. The following presents a case in which severe necrotizing fasciitis and myonecrosis of the lower extremity, as well as toxic shock, developed as a result of wound infection from direct contact with brackish water. Mixed aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, including Aeromonas hydrophila, were isolated from the wound culture. This case illustrates that an infection with Aeromonas hydrophila can cause severe necrotizing fasciitis

Although the number of patients presenting with necrotizing fasciitis remains small, the cases seen by practitioners become legendary. The purpose of this article is to demystify NF through a review of the pathophysiology and the clinical presentation of NE Recommended diagnostic and treatment modalities are also discussed. Future research is recommended in the area of advanced therapies, such as hyperbaric oxygenation and the utilization of burn centers. Without further advances, the practitioner must continue to be vigilant in completing rapid diagnosis and treatment so as to decrease morbid

Necrotizing fasciitis is a life-threatening soft-tissue infection primarily involving the superficial fascia. This study investigated the microbiologic characteristics and determinants of mortality of this disease. The medical records of 87 consecutive patients with a diagnosis of necrotizing fasciitis from 1999 to 2004 were retrospectively reviewed. A single pathogen was identified as the infectious agent in 59 patients (67.8%), multiple pathogens were identified in 17 patients (19.6%), and no organism was identified in 11 patients (12.6%). Klebsiella pneumoniae, identified in 17 patients, wa

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rapidly progressive life-threatening infection located in the deep fascia, with secondary necrosis of the subcutaneous tissues. Staphylococcus aureus as a single etiologic agent is rare. The pathogenicity of S. aureus infections is related to various bacterial surface components and extracellular proteins. A 56-year-old man developed fever, hypotension, impaired renal and hepatic functions, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and rapidly progressive NF affecting the 4 extremities due to methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA). The initial presenting symptom

Necrotizing fasciitis is a potentially fatal soft-tissue infection that predominantly affects the abdominal wall, perineum and extremities. It is an uncommon clinical entity in the head and neck region and an exhaustive review of the English language literature disclosed reports on approximately 160 cases. Dental pathology, post-traumatic or iatrogenic skin or mucosa injuries and parapharyngeal or peritonsillar infections were the most frequently described origins. We describe herein the first case of craniocervical necrotizing fasciitis (CCNF) due to a parotid gland abscess. The patient was s

Necrotizing fasciitis affecting the chest wall is a rare condition and carries high mortality. It spreads rapidly, requiring early diagnosis and immediate extensive surgical debridement. The case of a 32 year old man afflicted with this uncommon condition following tube thoracostomy for empyema thoracis is described and literature reviewed.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare, subcutaneous infection. It can occur in patients after solid-organ transplantation. We herein report two patients who developed necrotizing fasciitis following combined liver and small intestine transplantation. The first patient experienced this infection 4 yr after transplantation and 1 yr after the closure of the ileostomy. The second patient suffered from necrotizing fasciitis 2 days after the transplant. Both cases were diagnosed on the physical findings, culture of subcutaneous lavage, and the computed tomography findings. The site of entrance of the orga

Necrotizing fasciitis is a potentially life threatening, rapidly spreading polymicrobial infection rarely seen in the head and neck region. We present our experience of managing five patients with necrotizing fasciitis of head and neck at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan. One patient had necrotizing fasciitis of the facial region only; three had necrotizing fasciitis of the neck region; and one patient had necrotizing fasciitis of the neck with extension to the chest. None of these patients was immunocompromised. Dental foci of infection was the root cause in three of the pa

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rapidly progressive infection of the fascia and subcutaneous tissues accompanied by a high mortality rate approaching 80% to 100%. Factors that predispose patients to this life-threatening complication include obesity, malnutrition, malignancy, chronic alcoholism, drug abuse, peripheral vascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and immunosuppressive therapy. The pathomechanisms for the development of this rare disease still remain unclear. We report a case of necrotizing fasciitis with Clostridium perfringens after laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The patient left the hospit

Bacteria are everywhere. Most are not pathogenic unless the right environment or quantity is present. A superficial infection in the medically compromised patient can provide a microenvironment conducive to precipitating wound sepsis, local, and systemic immune responses. Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a subtle yet bold infection that presents like cellulitis; however, beneath the surface of the integument, the ravaging products of cellular degradation are fulminant. Large dermal and subcutaneous involvement, creating significant tissue defects, require aggressive assessment and management by a
