Assessing post-COVID-19 respiratory dynamics: a comprehensive analysis of pulmonary function, bronchial hyperresponsiveness and bronchodilator response.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has a considerable impact on the global healthcare system. Individuals who have recovered from COVID often experience chronic respiratory symptoms that affect their daily lives. This study aimed to assess respiratory dynamics such as airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) and bronchodilator response in post-COVID patients. METHODS: This study included 282 adults with respiratory symptoms who underwent provocation tests. The demographic details, clinical symptoms and medical histories were recorded. Baseline spirometry, methacholine challenge tests (MC

Cycle length dynamics at the onset of postinfarction ventricular tachycardias induced in canines: dependence on interval-dependent excitation properties of the reentrant substrate.

INTRODUCTION: Postinfarction monomorphic ventricular tachycardias induced by programmed stimulation may display initial cycle length (CL) variations before stabilizing. METHODS AND RESULTS: To show that tachycardia onset dynamics depend on rate-dependent electrical properties of the reentrant substrate, we extracted activation times and maximum negative slopes of local activation complexes (-dV/dt(max)) from 191 unipolar electrograms recorded in the anterior left ventricular wall of anesthetized, 3-day-old infarct canine preparations. Measurements were made of the responses to programmed stim

Locking Y Lateral Canthopexy as a Treatment for Dry Eye Disease Caused by Eyelid Malposition.

PURPOSE: The signs and symptoms of dry eye disease (DED) can affect the quality of life of patients. This study analyzes whether locking Y lateral canthopexy improves patients' quality of life and in what way it does so (based on the ocular surface disease index questionnaire) and DED signs (measured by the fluorescein breakup time, tear osmolarity, Schirmer test, and corneal staining) in patients with DED caused by a eyelid malposition or impaired blink dynamics. METHODS: This was a case-control study. Forty eyes of 20 patients with DED and lateral canthal disinsertion examined at the Univer

Reduced brain entropy in migraine with partial restoration during attacks: A resting-state fMRI study.

Migraine is a prevalent and disabling neurological disorder, characterized by difficulties in regulating headache activity, sensory processing, and cognitive-emotional states. Brain entropy quantifies the complexity of neural dynamics, where reduced entropy may reflect diminished neural adaptability, but its assessment with fMRI in migraine remains limited. Here, we examined alterations in brain entropy and their associations with clinical burden, attack timing, and symptomatology. Resting-state fMRI data were acquired from adults with episodic migraine, chronic migraine, and healthy controls.

Heterogeneous correlate and potential diagnostic biomarker of tinnitus based on nonlinear dynamics of resting-state EEG recordings.

Tinnitus is a heterogeneous condition of hearing a rattling sound when there is no auditory stimulus. This rattling sound is associated with abnormal synchronous oscillations in auditory and non-auditory cortical areas. Since tinnitus is a highly heterogeneous condition with no objective detection criteria, it is necessary to search for indicators that can be compared between and within participants for diagnostic purposes. This study introduces heterogeneous though comparable indicators of tinnitus through investigation of spontaneous fluctuations in resting-state brain dynamics. The proposed

Radiological Analysis of Cerebrospinal Fluid Dynamics at the Craniovertebral Junction Using Time-Spatial Labeling Inversion Pulse Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Patients with Cervical Spinal Canal Stenosis.

OBJECTIVE: Spondylotic changes in the cervical spine cause degeneration, leading to cervical spinal canal stenosis. This stenotic change can affect cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics by compressing the dural sac and reducing space in the subarachnoid space. We examined CSF dynamics at the craniovertebral junction (CVJ) using time-spatial labeling inversion pulse magnetic resonance imaging (Time-SLIP MRI) in patients with cervical spinal canal stenosis. METHODS: The maximum longitudinal movement of the CSF at the CVJ was measured as length of motion (LOM) in the Time-SLIP MRI of 56 patients. T

Disrupted Dynamic Interactions Between Large-Scale Brain Networks in Cocaine Users Are Associated With Dependence Severity.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorder is conceptualized as a neuropsychiatric disease with multifaceted phenotypic manifestations including disrupted interactions between brain networks. While the current understanding of brain network interactions is mostly based on static functional connectivity, accumulating evidence suggests that temporal dynamics of these network interactions may better reflect brain function and disease-related dysfunction. We thus investigated brain dynamics in cocaine use disorder and assessed their relationship with cocaine dependence severity. METHODS: Using a time fra

[Research Progress on Quorum Sensing-Regulated Oral Microbial Interaction Networks in Periodontitis].

Quorum sensing (QS) is a mechanism by which bacteria communicate and coordinate group behaviors through the secretion of signaling molecules, playing a critical role in oral microbial interactions and the pathogenesis of periodontitis. This review summarizes recent advances in QS-mediated regulation of oral microbial interaction networks in periodontitis, focusing on the molecular mechanisms that modulate biofilm formation, virulence factor expression, and pathogen community dynamics. In addition, novel QS-targeted therapeutic strategies are discussed. Although periodontitis is fundamentally a

Respiratory dynamics and speech intelligibility in speakers with generalized dystonia.

This study investigated aspects of respiratory function, during quiet breathing and monologue, in six adult dystonic subjects and compared the findings to a control group of four neurologically intact adults. Additionally, breathing dynamics were compared with speech intelligibility. Respiratory inductive plethysmography was used to assess breathing rate, periodicity of the breathing pattern, and inspiratory lung volume. Ear oximetry was used to assess arterial blood oxygen saturation. Speech intelligibility was rated by a panel of five judges. Breathing patterns differed between groups; the d

Quantum Dynamics Simulations of Polariton Transport in a Bloch Surface Wave Cavity.

Coupling excitons to quantized cavity photonic modes can significantly enhance the spatial and temporal range of excitonic transport. The formation of hybrid light-matter states, known as polaritons, plays a central role in this enhancement. Polaritons, owing to their photonic character, can greatly amplify coherent energy flow in excitonic systems and prolong their lifetime, and lead to ultrafast ballistic excitonic transport, which is typically diffusive outside a cavity. In Bloch surface wave (BSW) cavities, the group velocity of these polaritonic wavepackets has been theoretically predicte

Exploring pyrazolines as potential inhibitors of NSP3-macrodomain of SARS-CoV-2: synthesis and in silico analysis.

COVID-19 has proved to be a global health crisis during the pandemic, and the emerging JN.1 variant is a potential threat. Therefore, finding alternative antivirals is of utmost priority. In the current report, we present the synthesis of new and potential anti-viral pyrazoline compounds. Here we report a chemical scheme where β-aryl β-anilino ketones react with phenyl hydrazine in potassium hydroxide to give the corresponding 3,5-diarylpyrazoline. The protocol is applicable to a variety of β-amino ketones and tolerates several functional groups. This method is efficient and proceeds regiosele

Maternal pertussis immunization and the blunting of routine vaccine effectiveness: a meta-analysis and modeling study.

A key goal of pertussis control is to protect infants too young to be vaccinated, the age group most vulnerable to this highly contagious respiratory infection. In the last decade, maternal immunization has been deployed in many countries, successfully reducing pertussis in this age group. Because of immunological blunting, however, this strategy may erode the effectiveness of primary vaccination at later ages. Here, we systematically reviewed the literature on the relative risk (RR) of pertussis after primary immunization of infants born to vaccinated vs. unvaccinated mothers. The four studie

Infraslow dynamic patterns in human cortical networks track a spectrum of external to internal attention.

Early efforts to understand the human cerebral cortex focused on localization of function, assigning functional roles to specific brain regions. More recent evidence depicts the cortex as a dynamic system, organized into flexible networks with patterns of spatiotemporal activity corresponding to attentional demands. In functional MRI (fMRI), dynamic analysis of such spatiotemporal patterns is highly promising for providing non-invasive biomarkers of neurodegenerative diseases and neural disorders. However, there is no established neurotypical spectrum to interpret the burgeoning literature of
