A review of behavioral and pharmacological treatments for habit disorders in individuals with mental retardation.

This paper reviews the prevalence and behavioral and pharmacological treatment-outcome studies for habit disorders exhibited by individuals with mental retardation. The treatment-outcome studies target the habit disorders identified previously by researchers including nervous habits (nail biting, bruxism, and trichotillomania), motor and vocal tics, and Tourette's disorder. The paucity of behavioral treatments and the lack of controlled pharmacological research warrants further experimental evaluation of treatments for habit disorders affecting individuals with mental retardation. Conclusions …

Augmenting simplified habit reversal with an awareness enhancement device: preliminary findings.

The chronic hair pulling of a 36-year-old woman with moderate mental retardation was initially treated with a simplified habit-reversal (SHR) procedure that consisted of awareness training, competing response training, and social support. When SHR did not produce large and sustained reductions in hair pulling, an awareness enhancement device was added, and it reduced hair pulling to near-zero levels in two settings. The results are discussed, and directions for future research with this device are provided.

Language experience and right hemisphere tasks: the effects of scanning habits and multilingualism.

This study explores the effects of multilingualism and reading scanning habits on right hemisphere (RH) abilities. Native Hebrew speakers and Arabic-Hebrew bilinguals performed three tasks. Experiment 1 employed an odd/even decision paradigm on lateralized displays of bar graphs. Both groups of subjects displayed the expected LVFA within the range previously reported for readers of English. Experiment 2 consisted of a chair identification task designed to tap asymmetry of hemispheric arousal and a chimeric face task designed to tap RH specialization for facial emotion. Neither scanning habits …

The purpose of this study was to assess the snacking and oral hygiene habits of Washington State WIC children and their caregivers. Nutritious foods--milk, fruit juice, crackers, bananas, apples and cheese--were the most frequenty reported snacks. However, 38 percent of children were given highly cariogenic raisins for snacks once or more times per week. Snack foods were purchased most often by caregivers because they were healthful or the child's favorite. Put…

The effect of hypertrophic adenoids and tonsils on the development of posterior crossbite and oral habits.

There are a number of studies in the literature, that associate nasopharyngeal airway obstruction, as a result of adenoid enlargement, to the development of skeletal and dental abnormalities. However, the etiologic role of hypertrophied adenoids and tonsils in developing an aberrant dentofacial growth is not clear, yet. The present investigation attempted to study the incidence of maxillary posterior crossbite and oral habits, in a sample of 120 children, that displayed hypertrophied adenoids with or without enlarged tonsils, and underwent adenoidectomy. An attempt was also made to relate the …

[Breast feeding habits before and after the introduction of a partial rooming-in system].

From January 1981 to May 1982 a prospective study was conducted investigating the breast-feeding patterns following the introduction of a partial rooming-in-system in 1978. The present data were compared to a previous survey from the period before 1977. The incidence of breast-feeding increased over that time from 67% to 86,6%. Accordingly the rate of non-breast-feeding mothers decreased from 33% to 13,4%. In 10% of these mothers lactation-inhibition was carried out with drugs and in 3,4% a severe hypogalactia was found. The lactation-inhibition was carried out in 80% for maternal and in 20% f

Smell and Taste Disorder Impact on Eating Habits: A Cross-Sectional Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Smell and Taste disorders (SATDs) are underreported. There is a wide range of aetiology but recently we have seen growing prevalence related to Covid-19 infection. SATDs have broad implications for people's lives, including a significant impact on nutritional intake and eating behaviours, which we further explore here. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional observational study using an online questionnaire to gather data. Questions covered aetiology of SATDs, impact on BMI, social eating habits and enjoyment of food. RESULTS: A total of 794 participants responded of which 75% were f…

Constraint or Warning? Health Shocks and Dietary Habits Among Older Adults in China.

Health shocks may reshape health behaviors in later life, yet their implications for dietary habits remain insufficiently understood. Using six waves of the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey from 2002 to 2018, this study examines the association between serious illness episodes and dietary diversity among Chinese older adults. The results show that health shocks are significantly associated with lower dietary diversity. This association remains stable across sensitivity analyses. Heterogeneity analyses further indicate that the negative association is stronger among the oldest adul…

Heart Palpitations and Lifestyle Habits Among Jordanian School Children: A Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Palpitations, although often benign, can be distressing to adolescents and occasionally indicate underlying cardiac disease. Lifestyle factors such as sleep, caffeine, energy drinks, and screen time are potential contributors, but their impact hasn't been studied in Jordan. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 779 Jordanian schoolchildren aged 12-18 years using a structured questionnaire assessing palpitations and lifestyle habits. Associations were analysed with chi-square tests and t-tests. RESULTS: Palpitations were reported by 43% of participants and were more c…

Effect of dietary habits on multiple cardiovascular diseases: A comprehensive Mendelian randomization study.

The relationship between dietary habits, including the consumption of eggs, dairy products, and sugar, and the development of disease is well-established. However, further investigation is required to elucidate the precise associations between these dietary habits and cardiovascular disease (CVD). The objective of this study was to analyze existing genome-wide association studies in order to identify causal relationships between dietary habits and CVD. The 5 dietary habits rooted from the IEU database are categorized as: Never eat eggs, Never eat wheat products, Never eat sugar or foods/drinks…

Iron Deficiency Prevention and Dietary Habits Among Elite Female University Athletes in Japan.

This study investigated the percentage of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and iron deficiency (ID) among 71 elite female athletes at a Japanese university and assessed their dietary habits. IDA was identified in 9.9% (n = 7) of participants, and only 22.5% (n = 16) self-reported dietary practices aimed at preventing or managing ID/IDA. Notably, 52.1% (n = 37) of the athletes exhibited IDA or ID but lacked an appropriate dietary approach. Moreover, even among those who reported an intentional dietary approach to the prevention or management of ID/IDA, the intake of iron- and vitamin C-rich foods w…
