BACKGROUND & AIMS: Current therapy for primary sclerosing cholangitis is of limited efficacy. Multidrug resistance gene 2 knockout mice (Mdr2(-/-)) represent a well-characterized model for sclerosing cholangitis. Thirty-seven patients with postmenopausal crush fracture osteoporosis were randomized to oral cyclic estrogen/gestagen (n = 20) or oral calcium (2000 mg elemental calcium per day) (n = 17). Fibrosis is a common pathological feature observed in muscle from patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and in mdx diaphragm. The purpose of this study was to determine whether pentoxifylline (PTX) treatment for 4 weeks (16 mg/kg/day) could significantly attenuate the process of fibrosis in diaphragm muscle from mdx mice. The influence of chlorthalidone on bone resorption in immobilized patients treated with mechanical ventilation was studied. Gingival biopsies were obtained at various intervals for a period of two years from 12 patients suffering from Behçet's disease who were under a clinical trial of cyclosporin A (CsA) treatment.
