Diagnosis and management may present difficult problems in patients with colovesical fistulas. Symptoms in the urinary tract are most common, and cystoscopy, and cystography are the most valuable diagnostic procedures. It may not always be possible to demonstrate the fistula by diagnostic tests, and a high index of suspicion should be maintained in patients with inflammatory or neoplastic disease of the rectosigmoid area or bladder with recurrent cystitis. Definitive treatment should include resection of the fistula and diseased segment of the intestine. Both one stage and multistage procedure

An elderly woman patient presented with a history of recurrent right lower abdominal pain accompanied by fever and abnormal vaginal discharge for 36 years worse for two weeks. Conservative medical treatment was ineffective, by laparoscopic exploration combined with intraoperative colonoscopy, the presence of a sigmoid colon fistula and pelvic abdominal infection with foreign bodies were confirmed. It was hypothesized that the occurrence of recurrent right lower abdominal pain and intestinal fistula may be potentially associated with tubal injection sterilization performed 36 years ago.

Renocolic fistulas are rare lesions, generally involving the ascending and descending colon. The authors report a case of reno-sigmoid fistula occurring in a tuberculous pelvic ectopic kidney. Nephrectomy with segmental sigmoid resection was completed by antituberculous treatment for 9 months. The patient presents a good general condition with normal renal function and normal intestinal transit with a follow-up of 19 months.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Gallstone ileus is caused by an impaction of one or more gallstones within the gastrointestinal tract, leading to mechanical intestinal obstruction. It is a rare complication of cholelithiasis leading to the formation of a cholecystoenteric fistula and is associated with high mortality rates. We report a case of atypical subacute small bowel obstruction due to gallstone ileus.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: An 82-year-old man, with previously diagnosed cholelithiasis, presented with abdominal pain and vomiting for nine days. The contracted gallbladder with distended bowel

One hundred and nineteen patients with gastrointestinal fistulas were treated in the Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, in the period from January 1960 to January 1970. None of these patients was hyperalimented. The mortality in this seris amounted to 15%; 78.2% of the patients had their fistulas closed. These results are correlated with primary disease, etiology, fistula output, fistula location, type of treatment, malnutrition, electrolyte disturbances and sepsis. In the discussion it is concluded that treatment based on sound surgical principles acquired in the past decades, with the s…

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of various nutrients perfused selectively into isolated sections of the small intestine on the release of pancreatic polypeptide (PP). Six dogs were prepared with chronic gastric, duodenal, and three permanent intestinal fistulas (one distal to the ligament of Treitz, one in the terminal ileum, and one halfway between). After a 24-h fast, the duodenum was perfused for 45 min (200 ml/h) via the duodenal limb with HCl (30 mM), an amino acid solution (50 mM), or sodium oleate (NaO, 40 mM). In separate studies, the jejunal and ileal segments were…

Gallstone ileus is an uncommon complication of gallstones and a rare cause of intestinal obstruction. Typically as a result of the formation of cholecystoduodenal fistula, surgical removal of the gallstone is the mainstay of treatment in order to relieve the intestinal obstruction. A 34-year-old male with no history of cholelithiasis presented with features of a small bowel obstruction. CT scan of the abdomen demonstrated pneumobilia, a cholecystoduodenal fistula and small bowel obstruction, features suspicious for a gallstone ileus. The patient underwent a laparotomy and removal of two gallst

BACKGROUND: A minority of patients undergoing posterior component separation (PCS) have abdominal wall defects that preclude complete reconstruction of the visceral sac with native tissue. The use of absorbable mesh bridges (AMB) to span such defects has not been established. We hypothesized that AMB use during posterior sheath closure of PCS is safe and provides favorable outcomes.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of consecutive patients undergoing PCS with AMB at two hernia centers. Main outcome measures included demographics, comorbidities, and post-operative complications.

We analyzed modern treatment methods for widespread peritonitis (laparostomy, «open abdomen») and prospects of this approach. There are no generally accepted methods of laparostomy for peritonitis. Results of systematic reviews are often difficult to be interpreted due to combination of studies with and without control groups, as well as different methodologies for analysis of results. Laparostomy has many advantages. At the same time, patients are at risk of complications such as intestinal fistulas, adhesions (frozen abdomen), intestinal abscesses, delayed wound closure and ventral hernias. …

UNLABELLED: An iatrogenic urethral perineal fistula can cause challenging problems for surgical reconstruction. In most cases, treatment is performed in three steps: double-diversion urinary and intestinal diversion, closure, and diversion. The augmented posterior urethroplasty interposition with a gracilis muscle function flap for the repair of the perineal gap was successful.
CASE PRESENTATION: We reviewed a patient aged 42 years old male who presented to the urology department with leakage of urine per perineum after abdominal perineal resection and end colostomy due to anal-rectal maligna
