The effect of coloured overlays on reading ability in children with autism.

Abnormalities of colour perception in children with autistic spectrum disorders have been widely reported anecdotally. However, there is little empirical data linking difficulties in colour perception with academic achievement. The Wilkins Rate of Reading Test was administered with and without Intuitive Coloured Overlays to 19 children with autistic spectrum disorders and to the same number of controls individually matched for age and intelligence. Findings showed that 15 out of 19 (79%) children with autism showed an improvement of at least 5% in reading speed when using a coloured overlay. I

Spatial modelling of individual-level parasite counts using the negative binomial distribution.

We present a spatial model for the mean and correlation of highly dispersed count data, and apply it to individual-level counts of the nematode Wuchereria bancrofti, a parasite of humans which causes the disease lymphatic filariasis. Our model uses the negative binomial distribution, whose shape parameter is a convenient index of over-dispersion. Spatial association is quantified in terms of a characteristic length, which has an intuitive interpretation as the distance over which correlation decreases by half. Demographic surveillance and mapping enable us to include individual-level covariate

Optimization of diagnostic discrimination applied to the amniotic fluid lecithin/sphingomyelin ratio.

An unrecognized disparity frequently separates the intuitive reliance placed on laboratory information by those who produce it and those who use it. To harmonize these dissimilar perceptions requires quantitative measures of the information contained in laboratory data. The assay of the lecithin/sphingomyelin ratio in amniotic fluid is used as an example to analyze the discriminatory ability of a test. This assay can be optimized from the different viewpoints of sensitivity, specificity, diagnostic effectiveness or value. In each case test results are interpreted in the light of different fact

Enhancing Cognitive Reflection in Medical Trainees and Physicians: An EBM-CBL-PBL Integrated Teaching Model.

BACKGROUND: Insufficient cognitive reflection in medical trainees and early-career physicians is a root cause of diagnostic errors, yet research on enhancing cognitive reflection in complex surgical settings remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate whether an integrated evidence-based medicine, case-based learning, and problem-based learning (EBM-CBL-PBL) teaching model can improve cognitive reflection. METHODS: A two-phase design was employed. Cognitive reflection was assessed using the Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT). A generalized linear mixed model analyzed associations between sex,

Single-port robotic gastrectomy in gastric cancer: a narrative review on the state of the art and outlook.

Minimally invasive surgery for gastric cancer has progressed from conventional laparoscopy to reduced-port and single-incision techniques, and further to robotic systems that address ergonomic and technical constraints. Reduced-port laparoscopic gastrectomy and single-incision laparoscopic gastrectomy demonstrated feasibility and cosmetic advantages but faced inherent limitations-restricted triangulation, instrument collisions, and unstable visualization-resulting in steep learning curves and selective adoption. Reduced-port robotic platforms, notably Single-Site (Intuitive Surgical)-based red

Preoperative prediction of postoperative SIRS and sepsis after ureteroscopic lithotripsy: discriminative performance of large language models.

Postoperative systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and sepsis following ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URS) are uncommon but potentially life-threatening complications. No prior study has evaluated large language models (LLMs) for predicting post-URS SIRS/sepsis using exclusively preoperative parameters. This study evaluated the discriminative performance of LLMs in this setting. This retrospective case-control study included 210 patients who underwent URS between January 2024 and December 2025 (42 SIRS/sepsis cases, 168 controls). Risk scores (0-100) were generated using GPT-4o-mini and

Physicians' Perceptions and Experiences Regarding Leadership: A Link Between Beliefs and Identity Formation.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the development of national recommendations and training programs for effective leadership, junior and senior medical leaders often find themselves ill-prepared to take on these new responsibilities. This study aimed to explore physicians' perceptions, feelings, and beliefs regarding leadership and to provide recommendations regarding appropriate training and institutional post-training support. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study at the Geneva University Hospitals. A purposeful sample of residents (R), fellows (F), attending physicians (A), and chairpersons (CP) w

Advancing medical imaging: detecting polypharmacy and adverse drug effects with Graph Convolutional Networks (GCN).

Polypharmacy involves an individual using many medications at the same time and is a frequent healthcare technique used to treat complex medical disorders. Nevertheless, it also presents substantial risks of negative medication responses and interactions. Identifying and addressing adverse effects caused by polypharmacy is crucial to ensure patient safety and improve healthcare results. This paper introduces a new method using Graph Convolutional Networks (GCN) to identify polypharmacy side effects. Our strategy involves developing a medicine interaction graph in which edges signify drug-drug

Quantitative Assessment of Ligand Substituent Effects on σ- and π-Contributions to Fe-N Bonds in Spin Crossover FeII Complexes.

The effect of para-substituent X on the electronic structure of sixteen tridentate 4-X-(2,6-di(pyrazol-1-yl))-pyridine (bppX ) ligands and the corresponding solution spin crossover [FeII (bppX )2 ]2+ complexes is analysed further, to supply quantitative insights into the effect of X on the σ-donor and π-acceptor character of the Fe-NA (pyridine) bonds. EDA-NOCV on the sixteen LS complexes revealed that neither ΔEorb,σ+π (R2 =0.48) nor ΔEorb,π (R2 =0.31) correlated with the experimental solution T1/2 values (which are expected to reflect the ligand field imposed on the iron centre), but that ΔE

Measures of Intracranial Injury Size Do Not Improve Clinical Decision Making for Children With Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries and Intracranial Injuries.

BACKGROUND: When evaluating children with mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs) and intracranial injuries (ICIs), neurosurgeons intuitively consider injury size. However, the extent to which such measures (eg, hematoma size) improve risk prediction compared with the kids intracranial injury decision support tool for traumatic brain injury (KIIDS-TBI) model, which only includes the presence/absence of imaging findings, remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: To determine the extent to which measures of injury size improve risk prediction for children with mild traumatic brain injuries and ICIs. METHODS:

Can deep learning reduce the time and effort required for manual segmentation in 3D reconstruction of MRI in rotator cuff tears?

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The use of MRI as a diagnostic tool has gained popularity in the field of orthopedics. Although 3-dimensional (3D) MRI offers more intuitive visualization and can better facilitate treatment planning than 2-dimensional (2D) MRI, manual segmentation for 3D visualization is time-consuming and lacks reproducibility. Recent advancements in deep learning may provide a solution to this problem through the process of automatic segmentation. The purpose of this study was to develop automated semantic segmentation on 2D MRI images of rotator cuff tears by using a convolutional neura

Single-site robotic cholecystectomy (SSRC) versus single-incision laparoscopic cholecystectomy (SILC): comparison of learning curves. First European experience.

BACKGROUND: Single-incision laparoscopic surgery is an emerging procedure developed to decrease parietal trauma and improve cosmetic results. However, many technical constraints, such as lack of triangulation, instrument collisions, and cross-handing, hamper this approach. Using a robotic platform may overcome these problems and enable more precise surgical actions by increasing freedom of movement and by restoring intuitive instrument control. METHODS: We retrospectively collected, under institutional review board approval, data on the first 25 patients who underwent single-site robotic chol

Ranking and selecting dangerous crash locations: correcting for the number of passengers and Bayesian ranking plots.

INTRODUCTION: In this paper a sensitivity analysis is performed to investigate how big the impact would be on the current ranking of crash locations in Flanders (Belgium) when only taking into account the most serious injury per crash instead of all the injured occupants. RESULTS: Results show that this would lead to a different selection of 23.8% of the 800 sites that are currently considered as dangerous. CONCLUSIONS: Considering this impact quantity, the researchers want to sensitize government that giving weight to the severity of the crash can correct for the bias that occurs when the n
