Finding a positive me: Affective and neural insights into the challenges of positive autobiographical memory reliving in borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to investigate whether people with borderline personality disorder (BPD) can benefit from reliving positive autobiographical memories in terms of mood and state self-esteem and elucidate the neural processes supporting optimal memory reliving. Particularly the role of vividness and brain areas involved in autonoetic consciousness were studied, as key factors involved in improving mood and state self-esteem by positive memory reliving. METHODS: Women with BPD (N = 25), Healthy Controls (HC, N = 33) and controls with Low Self-Esteem (LSE, N = 22) relived four neutra

Exercise to spot the differences: a framework for the effect of exercise on hippocampal pattern separation in humans.

Exercise has a beneficial effect on mental health and cognitive functioning, but the exact underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. In this review, we focus on the effect of exercise on hippocampal pattern separation, which is a key component of episodic memory. Research has associated exercise with improvements in pattern separation. We propose an integrated framework mechanistically explaining this relationship. The framework is divided into three pathways, describing the pro-neuroplastic, anti-inflammatory and hormonal effects of exercise. The pathways are heavily intertwined and may r

Autobiographical memory and psychopathology: Is memory specificity as important as we make it seem?

Several decades of research have established reduced autobiographical memory specificity, or overgeneral memory, as an important cognitive factor associated with the risk for and maintenance of a range of psychiatric diagnoses. In measuring this construct, experimenters code autobiographical memories for the presence or absence of a single temporal detail that indicates that the remembered event took place on a single, specific, day (Last Thursday when I rode bikes with my son), or multiple days (When I rode bikes with my son). Studies indicate that the specificity of memories and the amount o

Remembering Collective Violence: Broadening the Notion of Traumatic Memory in Post-Conflict Rehabilitation.

In the aftermath of war and armed conflict, individuals and communities face the challenge of dealing with recollections of violence and atrocity. This article aims to contribute to a better understanding of processes of remembering and forgetting histories of violence in post-conflict communities and to reflect on related implications for trauma rehabilitation in post-conflict settings. Starting from the observation that memory operates at the core of PTSD symptomatology, we more closely explore how this notion of traumatic memory is conceptualized within PTSD-centered research and interventi

Enriched environment has limited capacity for the correction of hippocampal memory-dependent schizoid behaviors in rats with early postnatal NMDAR dysfunction.

Pre- and early postnatal stress can cause dysfunction of the N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) and thereby promote the development of hippocampus memory-dependent schizoid abnormalities of navigation in space, time, and knowledge. An enriched environment improves mental abilities in humans and animals. Whether an enriched environment can prevent the development of schizoid symptoms induced by neonatal NMDAR dysfunction was the central question of our paper. The experimental animals were Wistar rats. Early postnatal NMDAR dysfunction was created by systemic treatment of rat pups with the NM

Homo Memorabiliaxis: Souvenirs and the Evolution of Autobiographical Memory and Self.

Humans routinely keep souvenirs objects retained for the memories they evoke, yet the evolutionary and cognitive consequences of mnemonic collecting remain unclear. Existing discussions of curated objects concentrate on later prehistory and modern humans and view such objects at the social level, as carriers of shared cultural meaning or as markers of status. Here, we address an earlier time period and locate the phenomenon at the personal rather than the social level. By integrating archaeology with theories of extended memory and niche construction, we synthesize evidence consistent with sys

Deeper into dissociative Amnesia: A perspective from Higher-Order theories of consciousness.

Memory is a fundamental brain function relying on complex neurological mechanisms that involve the processes of experiencing, encoding, consolidating and retrieving. A disorder primarily characterized by the loss of (autobiographical) memory owing to stressful or traumatic events is dissociative amnesia, the underlying mechanisms of which are poorly understood and further research is warranted. In this review, we first outline the memory systems and associated brain areas, then introduce the neural suppression pathways of memory retrieval and discuss the neural correlates and influential theor

Disturbance at the self-other boundary in schizophrenia: Linking phenomenology to clinical neuroscience.

In this selective review, we describe the current neuroscientific literature on disturbances of the self-other boundary in schizophrenia as they relate to structural and experiential aspects of the self. Within these two broad categories, the structural self includes body ownership and agency, and the experiential self includes self-reflection, source monitoring, and self-referential and autobiographical memory. Further, we consider how disturbances in these domains link to the phenomenology of schizophrenia. We identify faulty internal predictive coding as a potential mechanism of disturbance

Backbone spiking sequence as a basis for preplay, replay, and default states in human cortex.

Sequences of spiking activity have been heavily implicated as potential substrates of memory formation and retrieval across many species. A parallel line of recent evidence also asserts that sequential activity may arise from and be constrained by pre-existing network structure. Here we reconcile these two lines of research in the human brain by measuring single unit spiking sequences in the temporal lobe cortex as participants perform an episodic memory task. We find the presence of an average backbone spiking sequence identified during pre-task rest that is stable over time and different cog

Relational and lexical similarity in analogical reasoning and recognition memory: Behavioral evidence and computational evaluation.

We examined the role of different types of similarity in both analogical reasoning and recognition memory. On recognition tasks, people more often falsely report having seen a recombined word pair (e.g., flower: garden) if it instantiates the same semantic relation (e.g., is a part of) as a studied word pair (e.g., house: town). This phenomenon, termed relational luring, has been interpreted as evidence that explicit relation representations-known to play a central role in analogical reasoning-also impact episodic memory. We replicate and extend previous studies, showing that relation-based fa

Smartwatch reminders are as effective as verbal reminders in patients with Korsakoff's syndrome: three case studies.

Korsakoff's syndrome (KS) is a neurocognitive disorder caused by severe malnutrition. KS patients typically show severe impairments in prospective memory (PM), thus, have difficulties with remembering to perform delayed intentions. The current study investigated the possible benefits of a smartwatch aid for PM tasks in patients with KS and compared its efficacy with verbal in-person reminders. Three patients participated in the present study and were asked to complete everyday PM tasks. The results of each patient were analyzed as a single-case study. The results highlight the great potential

Does self-focus orientation influence recall of autobiographical memories and subsequent mood in dysphoria?

Past research suggests that depressed individuals are less likely than non-depressed individuals to engage in mood-incongruent recall in response to negative mood and do not experience associated mood reparative effects. The present study examined the effects of adopting a reflective versus ruminative self-focus orientation towards one's mood on the valence of autobiographical memories recalled following a negative mood induction and the extent of mood repair following memory recall among individuals with varying depressive symptomatology. Participants underwent a negative mood induction and e

Phenomenology of counterfactual thinking is dampened in anxious individuals.

Counterfactual thinking (CFT), or simulating alternative versions of occurred events, is a common psychological strategy people use to process events in their lives. However, CFT is also a core component of ruminative thinking that contributes to psychopathology. Though prior studies have tried to distinguish adaptive from maladaptive CFT, our study provides a novel demonstration that identifies phenomenological differences across CFT in participants with varying levels of trait anxiety. Participants (N = 96) identified negative, regretful memories from the past 5 years and created a better co

How am I going to tell you this? The relations between social anxiety and narrative coherence.

Recently, evidence has been increasing that individuals who are able to narrate coherently about their autobiographical memories, receive more positive social feedback, have higher-quality social relationships and are overall less likely to suffer from internalising psychopathology, like depression and anxiety. However, the relation between narrative coherence and social anxiety, in particular, has not been topic of research until now. This is remarkable, since the concern about negative evaluations by others in social situations is at the core of social anxiety. In the present experimental st

Cognitive mechanisms of episodic simulation in psychiatric populations.

Episodic simulation is the construction of a mental representation of a specific autobiographical future event. Episodic simulation has increasingly been studied in psychiatric populations. Here we 1) review evidence indicating that episodic simulation is compromised in patients with depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and PTSD; and 2) consider several potential cognitive mechanisms of episodic simulation in psychiatric populations: episodic retrieval, scene construction, mental imagery, components of the CaRFAX model (i.e., capture and rumination, functional avoidance, and e

Mental Sleep Activity and Disturbing Dreams in the Lifespan.

Sleep significantly changes across the lifespan, and several studies underline its crucial role in cognitive functioning. Similarly, mental activity during sleep tends to covary with age. This review aims to analyze the characteristics of dreaming and disturbing dreams at different age brackets. On the one hand, dreams may be considered an expression of brain maturation and cognitive development, showing relations with memory and visuo-spatial abilities. Some investigations reveal that specific electrophysiological patterns, such as frontal theta oscillations, underlie dreams during sleep, as

Depression diagnoses, but not individual differences in depression symptoms, are associated with reduced autobiographical memory specificity.

OBJECTIVES: Difficulties recalling specific events from one's autobiographical past have been associated with a range of emotional disorders. We present the first examination of whether diagnoses of depression or individual differences in depression severity explain the most variance in autobiographical memory specificity. We also examine the contribution of other key cognitive factors associated with reduced memory specificity - rumination and verbal fluency - to these effects. METHODS: Participants with (n = 21) and without (n = 25) major depressive disorder completed self-report measures o

A longitudinal study of the relationship between loneliness and memory.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness has been associated to several negative health-related outcomes, including dementia. Literature reports a positive association between loneliness and episodic memory. However, there is lack of consensus on the plausible cause-and-effect relationship between both. OBJECTIVE: This study aims at offering evidence on the plausible causal processes between loneliness and the episodic memory. METHOD: We employed data from 64,861 individuals participating in the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). Parallel Process Latent Growth Models (PP-LGM) of loneli

Influence of Cognitive Reserve on Cognitive Trajectories: Role of Brain Pathologies.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Evidence on the association of cognitive reserve (CR) with the cognitive trajectories is limited. We aimed to examine the influence of CR indicator on domain-specific cognitive trajectories taking brain pathologies into account. METHODS: Within the Rush Memory and Aging Project, 1,697 participants without dementia (mean age 79.6 years) were followed up to 21 years. CR indicator encompassing education, early-life, mid-life, and late-life cognitive activities and late-life social activity was ascertained at baseline and categorized as tertiles (lowest, middle, and hig
