Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is widespread among the female population and significantly impairs the patient's quality of life. It is important to restore apical support for treating POP. Sacrocolpopexy and pectopexy are indicated for apical prolapse. Using a synthetic mesh in these techniques increases success by enhancing apical support. However, the implantation of synthetic mesh is associated with mesh-related complications. To discern characteristic computed tomography (CT) findings of tubo-ovarian abscess (TOA), we retrospectively reviewed the CT and pathological findings on 22 cases of TOA in 13 patients. The main pelvic lesion on CT mostly corresponded to ovarian abscess, and satellite lesions corresponded to pyosalpinx on pathological examination. We conclude that the characteristics of CT findings that may be suggestive of TOA are peripherally enhancing low-density pelvic mass, anterior displacement of the round ligament, and, especially, the presence of satellite lesions adjacent to main masses.

Two new human cases of dirofilariasis, both due to Dirofilaria (Nochtiella) repens, recently occurring in Nuoro province (Sardinia) on people permanently resident in the island, are described. The parasite was located in one case into the uterine round ligament, in the other it was subconjunctival. Some observations about the diagnostic difficulties in the first one and the dramatic symptoms in the second, whose parasite was yet alive during the surgical ablaction, are discussed. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy has been widely performed since its introduction in 1987 by Mouret. However, conversion to open cholecystectomy is common when the surgeon encounters variant anatomy. We report 2 cases of cholecystitis and cholelithiasis in patients with left-sided gallbladders that were treated with laparoscopic cholecystectomy by the same surgeon at this institution. A case of chronic urinary retention due to bladder outflow obstruction presenting at 7 months postpartum, following a history of early puerperal voiding difficulties, is outlined. The cause was found to be a markedly retroverted uterus obstructing the urethra. Laparoscopic ventrosuspension was performed, converting preoperative urinary residuals of over 400 ml to zero postoperatively.

CASE: Seven years after hip arthroscopy for cam impingement, a 47-year-old female patient suffered a valgus impacted femoral neck fracture of her left hip that was stabilized with cannulated screws. After fracture healing, she experienced persisting sharp groin pain that could be elicited in flexion/internal rotation and extension/adduction. We suspected a ligamentum teres impingement at the border of the acetabular fossa due to a post-traumatic fovea alta and performed an arthroscopic ligament resection. Symptoms completely resolved thereafter.

The report presents an evaluation of the surgery given to 587 stomach cancer patients at the Republican Oncological Dispensary (1995-2005). There were 2 groups--surgery for tumor combined with lymph dissection D2 and cytoreduction (R1 and R2), on the one hand, and controls (standard, palliative and diagnostic operations), on the other.
