Breast cancer in the cycle of hope and hopelesness: A qualitative research.

PURPOSE: Hope is a crucial psychological resource that influences adaptation and coping during the cancer journey. This study aimed to explore the lived experiences of hope and hopelessness among breast cancer survivors. METHODS: A descriptive qualitative design was employed. Semi-structured, in-depth interviews were conducted with 19 women who had completed their hospital-based treatment for breast cancer within the past 3-5 years. Data were collected via Zoom and analyzed using inductive content analysis. The study was reported by the COREQ checklist. RESULTS: Four main themes emerged from

Therapeutic climbing as an adjunctive treatment for psychiatric inpatients: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic climbing (TC) is increasingly used as a therapy form in psychosomatic settings. Recent studies have shown its effect … cts of self-efficacy and affective responses, new aspects were identified: Focus and concentration, social interaction, facing challenges, improved self-confidence, trust in others, and resource activation. Practical implications could be derived from this. Future studies should investigate the efficacy of TC in randomised, controlled clinical trials, considering th …

"Each one of us did the best we could for the community, while also supporting each other": community residents' perspectives on community health worker (CHW) response during the COVID-19 pandemic - a community science worker-led qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly disrupted the health and social wellbeing of the United States population, disproportionately affecting low-income, immigrant communities of color. In Orange County, California, community health workers (CHWs) were essential to addressing multilevel community needs among impacted communities. However, little is known about how communities and CHWs responded to meet their needs amid pressing challenges. METHODS: CHWs completed a popular education qualitative methods program under a Community Science Worker (CSW) model to design and facilitate fou

Overcoming Challenges in Learning Prerequisites for Adaptive Functioning: Tele-Rehabilitation for Young Girls with Rett Syndrome.

Background/Objectives: Rett Syndrome (RTT) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder that affects girls and is characterized by severe motor and cognitive impairments, the loss of purposeful hand use, and communication difficulties. Children with RTT, especially those aged 5 to 9 years, often struggle to develop the foundational skills necessary for adaptive functioning, such as eye contact, object tracking, functional gestures, turn-taking, and basic communication. These abilities are essential for cognitive, social, and motor development and contribute to greater autonomy in daily life. This stu

Discarded vehicle tires and their association with mosquito vector abundance across socioenvironmental gradients in New Orleans, LA.

Discarded vehicle tires serve as habitat for mosquito vectors. In New Orleans, Louisiana, discarded tires are an increasingly important public concern, especially considering that the city is home to many medically important mosquito species. Discarded tires are known to be associated with mosquito abundance, but how their presence interacts with other socioenvironmental gradients to influence mosquito ecology is poorly understood. Here, we ask whether discarded tire distribution could be explained by social factors, particularly median income, home vacancy and human population density, and wh

Moving toward affective immunology: Legacy and future directions.

The term "affective immunology" has recently been used to denote a field focused on the interplay between affective processes (including mood states, specific emotions, and regulatory processes) and various aspects of immune function. The overarching goals of this commentary are a) to provide historical underpinnings of this field with a focus on the profound impact of the work of Janice Kiecolt-Glaser, who is further honored in this special issue, b) to review important off-shoots of her legacy work in this domain, and c) to highlight important future directions for the field. Kiecolt-Glaser'

Rivalry and admiration-seeking in a social competition: From traits to behaviors through contextual cues.

To gain social status, humans employ two strategies, rivalry and admiration-seeking, and these strategies are over-expressed in trait narcissism, according to the Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry Concept (NARC) and the Status Pursuit in Narcissism (SPIN) model. Whether one engages in rivalry or admiration-seeking behaviors is thought to depend on the interaction between underlying traits and status-relevant social cues, with status threats encouraging rivalry and status-boosting experiences encouraging admiration-seeking. However, experimental studies of how traits and environment influence

Pandemic Diaries: Lived Experiences of Loneliness, Loss, and Hope Among Older Adults During COVID-19.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: While research on loneliness in later life has increased during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, … TS: Loneliness was defined by participants as a detrimental absence of companionship and meaningful social interactions. For most, lockdowns exacerbated loneliness, presented new triggers, and upended coping strategies. The disruption of the 'emotion work' involved with managing loneliness led to a reconfiguration of response strategies, including through digital te …

Time-Budget and Welfare Indicators of Stabled Horses in Three Different Stall Architectures: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Keeping horses in single stalls can lead to the development of abnormal and stereotypic behaviors (ASB). Opportunities for social interactions and stall architecture can influence behavior. The current study aimed to identify how three different stall architectures influenced time-budget and physiological parameters in horses. Stall types included: (1) 3.2 × 3.7 m with tactile contact between horses (B1); (2) 2.6 × 3.5 m with visual contact between horses and outside view (B2); (3) 2.3 × 3.4 m with visual contact and outside view (B3). Ten horses from B1 and B3, and nine from B2 were randomly …

An Examination of Cardiac Vagal Control Indices and Cognitive Stress Appraisal in Cigarette Smokers.

Identifying factors that influence how individuals who smoke cigarettes respond to stress is important as stress is a risk factor for smoking and its maintenance. This study examined the modulatory role of cardiac vagal control (CVC), a physiological correlate of self-regulation, on cognitive stress appraisal processes of adults who smoke. Sixty daily cigarette smokers were randomized to receive positive or negative feedback during a modified Trier Social Stress Test. Pre- and post-task stress appraisals were assessed and resting and reactivity CVC measures were computed. Moderated regression

Interpersonal Emotion Dynamics in Couples With Somatic Symptom Disorder: Dyadic Coherence in Facial Temperature During Emotional Interactions.

OBJECTIVE: Disturbances in emotional processes are commonly reported in patients with a somatic symptom disorder (SSD). Although emotions usually occur in social interactions, little is known about interpersonal emotion dynamics of SSD patients during their actual emotional encounters. This study examined physiological coherence (linkage) between SSD patients and their partners, and in healthy couples during their emotional interactions. Secondarily, we explored group-level relationships between participants' and their partners' subjective affect. METHODS: Twenty-nine romantic couples (16 hea…

Gait Variability Relates to Prosocial, Emotional and Risk-Taking Behavior in Typically Developing Children.

Motor skills enable multi-facetted interactions with the environment and allow children to develop social skills and respond appropriately to situational social demands when interacting with peers and adults. Previous research with clinical samples (e.g., children diagnosed with Developmental Coordination Disorder) showed that children's motor skills are closely linked to their psychosocial behavior (e.g., prosocial, hyperactive, inattentive, interpersonal), but studies with typically developing children are rare. We sought to fill this research gap by examining relationships between gait vari

Trust and service engagement among people who inject drugs after release from prison.

BACKGROUND: Compounding histories of injecting drug use and incarceration can marginalise people engaging with services, making it difficult for them to address their health and social welfare needs, particularly when they navigate community re-entry service supports. Drawing on Hall and colleagues' five components of trust, this paper seeks to understand how trust in service providers fosters (or inhibits) effective service engagement from the perspective of people who inject drugs during the prison post-release period. METHODS: Between September 2018 and May 2020, qualitative in-depth inter
