Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has been identified as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, but the mechanisms of this relationship are not well understood. This study investigates the associations between PTSD symptom clusters (hyperarousal, intrusive thoughts, avoidance behaviours and emotional numbing) and mechanisms of cardiovascular disease including cardiometabolic effects, inflammation, and haemodynamic functioning. In the ADVANCE study cohort of UK male military personnel, 1111 participants were assessed for PTSD via questionnaire and cardiovascular risk via ven

One factor potentially driving healthcare and hospital worker (HHW)'s declining mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic is feeling betrayed by institutional leaders, coworkers, and/or others' pandemic-related responses and behaviors. We investigated whether HHWs' betrayal-based moral injury was associated with greater mental distress and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms related to COVID-19. We also examined if these associations varied between clinical and non-clinical staff. From July 2020 to January 2021, cross-sectional online survey data were collected from 1,066 HHWs serv

Internet-delivered cognitive-behavioral therapy (I-CBT) is effective in treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, offering enhanced accessibility and cost-effectiveness. However, it's important to note that these technologies may not be suitable for all age groups. Therefore, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine if the effectiveness of I-CBT in treating PTSD varies based on the patients' mean age. We conducted a systematic review of the literature, focusing on randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in the ISI Web of Science, PubMed/MEDLINE, and PsycINFO d

Studies on post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) among mental health professionals (MHPs) are limited, particularly since restrictions due to coronavirus disease (COVID-19) have been lifted such as the recent termination of China's Dynamic Zero-COVID Policy. The current study filled this gap by exploring the prevalence, correlates, and network structure of PTSS as well as its association with suicidality from a network analysis perspective. A cross-sectional, national survey was conducted using a convenience sampling method on MHPs between January 22 and February 10, 2023. PTSS were assessed u

OBJECTIVE: Although an emerging body of research has examined the legal causes of wrongful convictions, there is little research that examines the psychological impact of wrongful convictions. This study aims to understand the psychological experiences of exonerees, with a focus on the role of meaning-making in individuals' reactions to trauma. The study also aims to examine exonerees' self-reported trajectories of distress throughout their experience of being wrongfully convicted and subsequently exonerated.
METHOD: A total of 46 exonerees completed an online survey. Measures included: Patie

Long-term sequelae in hospitalized Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients may result in limited quality of life. The current study aimed to determine health-related quality of life (HRQoL) after COVID-19 hospitalization in non-intensive care unit (ICU) and ICU patients. This is a single-center study at the University Hospital of Wuerzburg, Germany. Patients eligible were hospitalized with COVID-19 between March 2020 and December 2020. Patients were interviewed 3 and 12 months after hospital discharge. Questionnaires included the European Quality of Life 5 Dimensions 5 Level (EQ-5D-5L), p

BACKGROUND: 75 % of youth with MS report symptoms of fatigue, depression, and anxiety. Social network size (number of people in an individual's network) is known to have positive impacts on health and health behavior in pediatric populations and in individuals with multiple sclerosis.
OBJECTIVES: To estimate associations between social network size (SNS) and depression, anxiety, symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and quality of life among youth with recurrent neuroinflammatory disorders (RNI) in comparison to that of youth with monophasic acquired demyelinating syndrome (mono-

BACKGROUND: The association of traumatic experiences with problematic alcohol use has been described, but data on possible mediation effects of mental distress are sparse. We examined whether mental ill-health mediated the association between trauma exposure across the lifespan and alcohol use.
METHOD: We analysed cross-sectional data from a sample of rape-exposed and non-rape-exposed women, living in KwaZulu-Natal, with self-reported data on alcohol misuse (AUDIT-C cut-off ≥ 3) and exposure to childhood maltreatment (CM), intimate partner violence (IPV), non-partner sexual violence (NPSV), o

This pilot study assessed the feasibility of using SwapMyMood, a smartphone application supporting evidence-based strategies for emotion regulation and problem-solving as a supplement to conventional care for military service members and veterans (SM/Vs) experiencing chronic symptoms of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and co-occurring psychological conditions. Eight military SM/Vs were recruited from an intensive outpatient program. Participants were block randomized to an experimental group (conventional care plus use of the SwapMyMood app) or a conventional care only group for six weeks.

OBJECTIVE: To examine relationships between performance validity testing (PVT), neurobehavioral symptom endorsement, and symptom attribution in Veterans with a history of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI).
METHOD: Participants included treatment-seeking Veterans (n = 37) with remote mTBI histories who underwent a neuropsychological assessment and completed a modified version of the Neurobehavioral Symptom Inventory (NSI) to assess symptom endorsement and symptom attribution (the latter evaluated by having Veterans indicate whether they believed each NSI symptom was caused by their mTBI). Research on childhood sexual abuse (CSA) has consistently demonstrated the long-term effects of such abuse, not only on survivors' development, but also on the nature and quality of their adult relationships, particularly romantic ones. In this study we examined the moderating role of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and sexual-related posttraumatic stress symptoms (sexual-related PTSS) between CSA and relationship satisfaction. Survey data from 529 individuals who reported being currently in a romantic relationship were analyzed. In the first set of analyses, results demonstrated that par

Extant research has shown that sexual violence disproportionately affects lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) individuals, conferring risk for the development of posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and related mental health conditions. However, little research has focused on specific vulnerabilities among LGBTQ+-identified sexual assault (SA) survivors (e.g., minority stress) and their associations with post-SA psychopathology. To address this gap, we examined associations between experiences of minority stress and post-SA psychopathology in a sample of LGBTQ+ individuals

BACKGROUND: Exposure to traumatic events, ongoing adversity, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are associated with altered activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, but findings are mixed. This may be explained in part by heterogeneity in PTSD symptom profiles.
AIM: The aim of this study was to investigate the complex relationships between the number of traumatic events and post-displacement stressors, individual symptoms of PTSD, and HPA-axis hormones cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) in refugees.
METHODS: Adult (18+ years) Syrian refugees with increased lev

BACKGROUND: Previous empirical literature has examined the associations between childhood sexual abuse (CSA) exposure, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and smoking. However, few studies examined symptom-level associations between smoking and PTSD among CSA victims. Thus, the aims of this study were 1) to explore symptom-level associations between smoking and PTSD among combustible cigarette (CC) and electronic cigarette (EC) users exposed to CSA and 2) to compare the differences manifested in two network structures between EC and CC users with CSA experiences.
METHODS: This cross-section

In a drug-facilitated sexual assault (DFSA), the person's level of intoxication may result in incomplete memory. This paper describes eye movement and desensitization reprocessing (EMDR) with client-centered adaptations to address an incomplete trauma memory in a 26-year-old woman. The client was experiencing PTSD, characterized by nightmares and derealization. Therapy followed standard EMDR procedures with three minor modifications to help the client maintain current awareness. Although the memory remained incomplete, the client-centered adaptations promoted working through of the clients' tr

Background: Evidence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms related to the COVID-19 pandemic during the perinatal period and the associated risk factors are still limited. Thus, we aimed to investigate the PTSD symptoms associated with the COVID-19 pandemic in a large sample of both pregnant and postpartum women. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 3319 pregnant and up to 6-month postpartum women from Spain. An online survey was completed between June 2020 and January 2021. The assessment included measures of PTSD symptoms associated with COVID-19 (evaluated with 10 qu

The relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and focal epilepsy is poorly understood. It has been hypothesized that there is a complex and reciprocal potential reinforcement of the symptoms of each condition. In this study, we investigated whether there are PTSD-specific brain changes in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Brain fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (PET) metabolism was compared between controls and two groups of TLE patients: one group of 15 patients fulfilling the criteria for a potential diagnosis of PTSD (TLE-PTSD+), another group of 24 patients withou

Dysregulation of the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) has been revealed to contribute to cognitive and arousal impairments associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in an animal model. In our research an acute exposure to single prolonged stress (SPS) was used to establish PTSD rat model and the effects related to cell-cycle signaling pathway in DRN were examined. Apoptosis in DRN was detected by TUNEL staining, showing that DRN apoptosis number was sharply increased after SPS. SPS triggered cell-cycle CDK4/CyclinD1-pRB-E2F1 signal pathway. Treatment with CDK4 inhibitor Abemaciclib succe
