AIM: To expedite the healing of tendons by introducing chitosan to the repaired tendon site.
METHODS: Thirty-six adult, male Wistar Albino rats (300-450 g) were randomly divided into three groups. A full-thickness quadriceps injury model was created in the right hind leg of all animals. The first group did not undergo any intervention (control group). In the second group, primary repair was performed following injury (primary suturing (PS) group). In the third group, primary repair was performed, and 50 mg chitosan was administered via injection at the repair site (PS+Chitosan group). Tail ve…

The Achilles tendon plays a vital role in maintaining normal gait and locomotion. The incidence of Achilles tendon rupture (ATR) has been increasing, mainly due to the rising popularity of recreational sports. This review assesses anticoagulation efficacy in preventing venous thromboembolism (VTEs) during ATR treatment and aims to establish an evidence-based prophylaxis protocol. Initially, a comprehensive search across PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science (WoS), and the Cochrane Library databases, and the citation analysis identified studies on VTE prophylaxis in patients with acute or chronic ATR.

BACKGROUND: Chronic Achilles tendon (AT) ruptures pose a significant reconstructive challenge. While various surgical techniques have been described, comparative data between open allograft augmentation and endoscopic autograft transfer remain scarce.
METHODS: This study evaluated 41 patients with chronic AT rupture treated surgically: 21 underwent open repair with tendon allograft (Group A) and 20 received endoscopic transfer of the flexor hallucis longus (FHL) tendon (Group B). Complications were recorded, and clinical outcomes were compared between groups.
RESULTS: At a minimum 24-month f

Anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is a known risk factor for ipsilateral and contralateral anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear, influenced by patient age, activity level, and graft choice. The Multicenter Orthopaedic Outcome Network (MOON) calculator predicts risks post-ACLR, aiding in graft selection and prognosis. The MOON calculator is only validated for those patients under 22 years of age and with patellar bone-tendon-bone (BTB) or hamstring tendon graft options, restricting its applicability. This study assessed the MOON calculator's accuracy in a more diverse patient po

BACKGROUND: Extensor pollicis longus (EPL) rupture is a well-described complication after volar plate fixation of distal radius fractures. Although protrusion of screw tips through the dorsal cortex of the distal radius is likely the cause of a substantial proportion of EPL ruptures, it is probably not the sole cause for EPL rupture after distal radius fracture. The purpose of this study was to evaluate preoperative computed tomography (CT) scans of distal radius fractures to characterize the incidence of EPL damage at the time of injury.
METHODS: This retrospective study included adults with

OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate a minimally invasive ultrasound (US)-guided biopsy technique to collect entheseal tissue from the common extensor tendon (CET) enthesis at the lateral humeral epicondyle.
METHODS: Seven sonographers performed a US examination of the CET on six human cadaveric upper limbs to locate the enthesis using an anatomical landmark-based approach. An adapted mini-arthroscopic system was introduced under US guidance to the target site for sample collection. At the end of the procedure, a dye was injected through the guide needle, followed by dissection, to confirm the

BACKGROUND: Thumb carpometacarpal joint osteoarthritis (CMCJ OA) is a common degenerative condition that causes pain, stiffness, and disability, reducing quality of life. Surgery is a well-established treatment option when conservative management fails, but the optimal surgical approach remains debated. This study compared the cost-utility of trapeziectomy with ligament reconstruction and tendon interposition (LRTI + T) versus suture suspension arthroplasty (SSA) for CMCJ OA.
METHODS: A Markov microsimulation model was developed to compare LRTI + T and SSA from a hospital payer perspective. O

PURPOSE: Isolated capitolunate joint osteoarthritis is a rare condition with a poorly understood pathophysiology. To avoid midcarpal arthrodesis in active patients, we propose arthroscopic resection of the proximal pole of the capitate with tendon interposition (arthroscopic capitolunate tendinous interposition [ACLTI]). This study aimed to present the outcomes of patients after undergoing ACLTI.
METHODS: This retrospective, single-center study included six patients with isolated capitolunate osteoarthritis who underwent capitate resection combined with ACLTI. The mean follow-up period was 89

Hip and groin pain are frequent presenting complaints among elderly patients. These symptoms are most commonly related to fractures, which are usually identifiable on X-rays. Spontaneous iliopsoas tendon injury, however, is a rare and under-recognised cause of atraumatic hip or groin pain in this population. We report the case of a 90-year-old woman with a history of multiple comorbidities on long-term warfarin for atrial fibrillation who presented with dull left groin pain radiating to the lower back and marked limitation of mobility in the absence of recent trauma. On admission, the internat

The navicular bone is critical for foot biomechanics, stabilizing the midfoot through its articulation with the talus and cuneiform bones. Variations, including accessory ossicles, hypoplasia, and complete absence, can lead to altered foot function. We present the case of a 58-year-old female patient who experienced persistent left foot pain. Imaging revealed the congenital absence of the navicular bone, resulting in altered biomechanics, midfoot instability, flatfoot deformity, and secondary degenerative changes. Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD), a leading cause of adult-acquired fl

PURPOSE: Acute Achilles tendon tears in young active individuals are often treated surgically with prolonged rehabilitation, with the leg initially immobilized in plantar flexion in serial non-weight bearing casts and gradually progressing to full weight bearing. This study aimed to evaluate the safety of an early functional unsupervised rehabilitation protocol.
METHODS: The medical records of 25 patients treated with open repair were available for follow-up. In 10 patients, an early functional unsupervised rehabilitation protocol was used with a removable cast, active range of motion exercis

Flexor tendon injury is a common hand trauma that requires surgical repair. The objective was to compare the repaired strength and gliding resistance with a varied number of repair strands and of square knots using a two-strand-overhand locking (TSOL) knot. First, isolated suture loops with different number of suture strands and number of closing knots were compared in mechanical strength and failure mode. Then, 90 flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) tendons from turkey digits were used for the tendon repair experiment. Both phases followed a similar 3 × 3 matrix comparing the knot type including…

Access to the glenohumeral joint during a deltopectoral approach to total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) often requires some form of subscapularis (SSc) tendon detachment, which may lead to iatrogenic damage and insufficiency of a previously healthy structure. Despite optimization of SSc management techniques, the overall repair failure rate remains high. Although various biological and structural augmentation methods have been advocated to enhance healing of rotator cuff repairs, few options have yet been explored for SSc repair after TSA. In this Technical Note, we describe a method involving t
