Effects of α-pyrrolidinopentiophenone and 4-methyl-N-ethylcathinone, two synthetic cathinones commonly found in second-generation "bath salts," on intracranial self-stimulation thresholds in rats.

BACKGROUND: Use of synthetic cathinones, which are designer stimulants found in "bath salts," has increased dramatically in recent years. Following governmental bans of methylenedioxypyrovalerone, mephedrone, and methylone, a second generation of synthetic cathinones with unknown abuse liability has emerged as replacements. METHODS: Using a discrete trials current intensity threshold intracranial self-stimulation procedure, the present study assessed the effects of 2 common second-generation synthetic cathinones, α-pyrrolidinopentiophenone (0.1-5 mg/kg) and 4-methyl-N-ethcathinone (1-100 mg/k

Treatment may influence self-report and jeopardize our understanding of outcome.

OBJECTIVE: Standardized measures of self-reported alcohol use are the predominant method by which change in alcohol use following interventions is evaluated. This study examined whether the invariance of the test-retest pretreatment Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) was affected by the treatment experience. In this study, the intervening exposure was to motivational interviewing (MI) versus community service (CS), the treatment-as-usual control group. METHOD: Analyses were conducted on a subsample of court-referred 16- to 21-year-olds recruited into a randomized controlled tri

Concurrent validity of walking speed values calculated via the GAITRite electronic walkway and 3 meter walk test in the chronic stroke population.

The purpose of this study was to provide novel information regarding the concurrent validity (primary aim) and reliability (secondary aim) of walking speed (WS) calculated via the GAITRite electronic walkway system and 3 meter walk test (3MWT) in the chronic stroke population. The 3MWT is a feasible option for clinicians working in environments where space is limited. Psychometric properties of the test have not been established. Participants with chronic stroke were stratified into three groups: (1) household ambulators (HA) (self-selected WS < 0.4 m/s, 12 participants, 31 observations); (2)

The neuropeptide-Y Y5 receptor antagonist L-152,804 decreases alcohol self-administration in inbred alcohol-preferring (iP) rats.

Neuropeptide-Y (NPY) is the most abundant and widely distributed peptide in the mammalian central nervous system and increases feeding behavior through actions at the Y5 receptor subtype. Recent pharmacological evidence indicates that NPY activity at this receptor subtype can modulate ethanol reinforcement. The purpose of this study was to determine if NPY Y5 receptor antagonism reduces ethanol self-administration and reinforcement in a rodent genetic animal model of alcoholism. Selectively inbred alcohol-preferring (iP) rats were trained to voluntarily consume ethanol (10% vol/vol) versus H2O

Study protocol for a multi-site randomized clinical trial of an intervention program to promote self-management among head and neck cancer survivors with lymphedema and fibrosis [PROMISE trial].

BACKGROUND: Lymphedema and fibrosis (LEF) secondary to head and neck cancer (HNC) treatment is a chronic process and a lifelong commitment to self-care. Although prospective data is lacking, a program of self-management may reduce LEF progression and minimize associated functional impairments and symptom burden. Barriers to long-term LEF self-care include lack of standardized self-care protocols as well as lack of LEF-related knowledge, skills, self-efficacy and adherence among HNC survivors. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a standardized lymphedema and fibrosis

Quality of life and self-regulatory fatigue in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: the mediating effects of personal mastery and health-promoting behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Quality of life (QoL) is a key prognostic indicator in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The interplay between psychological and behavioral determinants remains underexplored. OBJECTIVES: To examine QoL and its associated factors in T2DM patients, and to test the mediating roles of personal mastery (PM) and health-promoting behaviors (HPB) between self-regulatory fatigue (SRF) and QoL. METHODS: A cross-sectional study recruited 432 T2DM patients from three Chinese tertiary hospitals (July 2025-February 2026). Data were collected using the Demographic Characteristics Questionnaire,

Gender-Sensitive Coping-Well-Being Profiles Associated with Alcohol and Cannabis Co-Use Among Young Adult Women.

BACKGROUND: Coping strategies and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) are critical psychosocial determinants of substance use risk during emerging adulthood. These factors may be particularly salient among young women due to gendered emotional and interpersonal stressors. However, much substance use research remains gender-neutral, often failing to account for unique developmental factors influencing women. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify gender-sensitive coping-well-being profiles associated with alcohol and cannabis co-use among young adult women and examine whether specific copin

Disrupted Frontoparietal Dynamics in Neurofibromatosis Type 1: Reduced Sensitivity and Atypical Modulation During Working Memory.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a rare, single-gene neurodevelopmental disorder. Atypical brain activation patterns have been linked to working memory difficulties in individuals with NF1. This work investigates the alterations in frontoparietal effective connectivity in regions with atypical activation during working memory performance, with particular attention to self-connections (intrinsic inhibitory influences each region exerts on itself). Forty-three adolescents with NF1 and 26 age-matched neurotypical controls completed functional magnetic resonance imaging scans during a verbal work

Comparative Effects of Pacing Strategies on Endurance Performance: A Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pacing strategy is a key determinant of endurance performance, enabling athletes to regulate effort to optimise outcomes. While various pacing profiles (e.g. self-selected, fast-start, even, or slow) have been proposed, their comparative effects on performance remain unclear because of conflicting findings and methodological variability across studies. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to conduct a systematic review and network meta-analysis to compare the effects of different pacing strategies on endurance time-trial performance in healthy athletes. METHODS: We included peer-reviewed experime

A text message intervention to support women's physical and mental health after breast cancer treatments (EMPOWER-SMS): a randomised controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in women worldwide. In developed countries, 80-90% of women will survive five years after diagnosis but the transition from hospital-based care to health self-management and self-efficacy can be difficult. Text messaging programs offer a simple and proven way to provide support to people with chronic diseases. This study aims to test the effectiveness of a text message support program at improving women's health self-efficacy, and physical and mental health outcomes after breast cancer treatments compared to usual care at 6-months a

Sensitivity of self-reported opioid use in case-control studies: Healthy individuals versus hospitalized patients.

BACKGROUND: Several case-control studies have shown associations between the risk of different cancers and self-reported opium use. Inquiring into relatively sensitive issues, such as the history of drug use, is usually prone to information bias. However, in order to justify the findings of these types of studies, we have to quantify the level of such a negative bias. In current study, we aimed to evaluate sensitivity of self-reported opioid use and suggest suitable types of control groups for case-control studies on opioid use and the risk of cancer. METHODS: In order to compare the validity

Early medical abortion.

Early medical abortion (EMA) with mifepristone and misoprostol is expanding access to safe abortion across the world. The drug regimen has changed and the steps involved in EMA have been significantly simplified since EMA was first introduced over 35 years ago. Evidence shows that women can safely self-administer both mifepristone and misoprostol themselves at home and self-manage the procedure including confirming the success of the procedure with a self-performed pregnancy test. Telemedicine has expanded access to EMA and evidence shows that it is associated with similar outcomes to traditio
