Tibiotalocalcaneal Arthrodesis: Comparison of Ipsilateral Distal Fibular Autograft as an Intramedullary Strut and Lateral Tibia Plating Versus Intramedullary Nail.

BackgroundVarious techniques using different implants with or without bone grafts have been described in tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis (TTCA). However, which reconstructive method and fixation device results in better outcomes remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to compare the surgical outcomes of TTCA performed with ipsilateral distal fibular autograft as intramedullary strut and lateral plating (FAISP) or retrograde intramedullary nail (RIMN).MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed the records of patients who underwent TTCA between 2010 and 2021 performed by a single surgeon. The surg

Clamshell Corticotomy: A Technique to Address Challenges of Narrow Medullary Canal during Intramedullary Nailing of Tibial Shaft Fracture Fixation.

Intramedullary nailing for diaphyseal fractures is a gold standard procedure, that is, often associated with some intraoperative challenges. Fixing an intramedullary nail in a narrow canal in an unplanned surgery is a nightmare. Forceful implantation leads to iatrogenic fracture or comminution at the fracture site. Forceful reaming in such scenarios is also associated with thermal osteonecrosis and at times incarceration of flexible reamer head. It is not uncommon to face a challenge intraoperatively with regards to a narrow medullary canal, however, well we plan preoperatively. Clamshell oste

Assessing the Health Implications of UV/LED Nail Lamp Radiation Exposure During Manicure and Pedicure Procedures: A Scoping Review.

Skin malignancies associated with radiation exposure, notably malignant melanoma and keratinocyte carcinoma, are emerging as a significant global health challenge. While indoor tanning beds are associated with skin cancer risk, limited research exists on ultraviolet (UV)/light-emitting diode (LED) nail lamps used widely in manicures/pedicures. This scoping review aimed to synthesize evidence on the health effects of UV/LED nail lamp exposure during manicures/pedicures. A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, and CINAHL identified 17 articles, including 12 studies and 5 case reports meeting elig

Fixation in Intertrochanteric Fractures Using Short Proximal Femoral Nail Anti-Rotation-2: A Functional and Radiological Prospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Femoral shaft fractures are highly prevalent. Surgical treatment is the optimal approach for managing them as it greatly decreases the rates of illness and death in injured people. The optimal therapy for these diseases entails the utilization of nail, plates, screws, and external fixation devices. At present, reamed intramedullary nailing is regarded as the optimal approach and universally recognized treatment indicated for fractures occurring in the shaft of the femur. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES AND TECHNIQUES: The study done at Krishna Hospital in Karad between February 2022 and

A smart nail platform for wireless subsoil health monitoring via unmanned aerial vehicle-assisted radio frequency interrogation.

Monitoring subsoil conditions across large agricultural areas is essential for optimizing resource use and supporting sustainable crop production. However, most existing sensing systems rely on battery-powered electronics that are costly, require maintenance, and are difficult to scale. To address these limitations, we introduce HARVEST (Hybrid Antenna for Radio frequency-enhanced Volumetric water content and Electrical conductivity-based Soil Tracking), a low-cost, wireless platform that eliminates the need for onboard electronics. HARVEST uses nail-shaped sensing probes physically and electr

Diagnosis and management of yellow nail syndrome: An international multi-institutional retrospective cohort study of 111 cases by an expert panel.

BACKGROUND: Yellow nail syndrome (YNS) is a rare syndrome with unknown pathogenesis characterized by a clinical triad of respiratory disease, lymphedema, and xanthonychia. Diagnosis is challenging as clinical manifestations often do not occur concurrently. Due to disease rarity, few studies to date have characterized YNS or assessed therapeutics. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to characterize clinical findings of YNS and compare therapeutic regimens to provide diagnostic and management recommendations. METHODS: An international multi-institutional retrospective cohort study of YNS patients was conducte

Nail Lichen Planus in 81 Patients: A Retrospective Study of Clinical Characteristics, Histopathological Features, and Long-Term Treatment Outcomes.

Nail lichen planus (NLP) is a rare, chronic inflammatory nail disorder that can result in irreversible damage. While clinical awareness is growing, long-term real-world data-particularly incorporating histopathological confirmation and treatment outcomes-remains limited. We retrospectively analyzed 81 biopsy-confirmed NLP cases (2016-2024) from a Chinese dermatology center to characterize their epidemiological, clinical, histological features, treatment responses, and long-term outcomes. The mean age at onset of our cohort was 44.41 ± 17.77 years, with a slight male predominance (59.26%). Nail

Amorolfine hydrochloride loaded solid lipid nanoparticles: Preparation, characterization and ex vivo nail permeation study to treat onychomycosis.

Onychomycosis is a disease of the nail plate caused by fungi, leading to the progressive defacing of the nail. The infection requires a longer period of treatment orally and topically. The treatment with the topical route is difficult due to the low availability of drugs across the infected nail. This failure in topical treatment is the drawback of the conventional drug delivery system (DDS), particularly drug penetration issues across the nail plate. The solid lipid nanoparticle (SLN) approach was used to overcome such issues. The drug amorolfine hydrochloride (AOF) was incorporated into SLN

Management of hypertrophic femoral diaphyseal nonunion due to sclerotic bone formation (corticalization) at the intramedullary nail tip after dynamization.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the presence of the "cortex sign" (corticalization) in femoral diaphysis fractures determined by the dynamization of nails because of delayed union. The study included 12 patients with a closed transverse femoral fracture (AO 32a3) treated with dynamization (all the screws distal of the nail were removed) because of delayed healing and followed up for at least 2 years. These patients were evaluated for the presence of bone union, cortex-like sclerosis (corticalization) distal to the nail, and the distance of the corticalization from the jo…

Spontaneous healing of hypertrophic pseudoarthrosis of pediatric mid shaft ulna with elastic stable intramedullary nailing in situ: A case report.

Forearm fractures are the most common type of fractures in pediatric age. As children have excellent healing potential, fracture nonunion is a very uncommon complication. Elastic intramedullary nailing, a minimally invasive technique, is an excellent treatment modality for the unstable forearm shaft fractures in children, which can seldom lead to nonunion. Here, we present a case of hypertrophic pseudoarthrosis of mid shaft of ulna in a 13-year-old male, which healed spontaneously with elastic stable intramedullary nailing in situ.

Management of Recurrent Giant Cell Tumor of Distal Tibia With Intramedullary Hindfoot Fusion Nail and Trabecular Metal Implant Construct.

Reconstruction options for giant cell tumors (GCTs) of bone are limited and challenging due to the amount of structural compromise and the high recurrence rates. This is especially true for GCTs of the foot and ankle, as the area is vital for weight bearing and function. The typical treatment for GCTs is currently excision, curettage, and cementation, although that is not always effective. A 36-year-old otherwise healthy female presented with an original diagnosis of a large aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) of the distal tibia that had recurred despite two previous attempts at treatment with resecti
