MR image-based grading of lumbar nerve root compromise due to disk herniation: reliability study with surgical correlation.

A system for grading lumbar nerve root compromise (no compromise, contact of disk material with nerve root, deviation of nerve root, and compression of nerve root) was tested in the interpretation of routine magnetic resonance images of 500 lumbar nerve roots in 250 symptomatic patients. Intra- and interobserver reliability was assessed for three independent observers. In the 94 nerve roots evaluated at surgery, surgical grading was correlated with image-based grading. kappa statistics indicated substantial agreement between different readings by the same observer and between different observe

Spatial imagery in deductive reasoning: a functional MRI study.

Various cognitive theories aim to explain human deductive reasoning: (1) mental logic theories claim syntactic language-based proofs of derivation, (2) the mental model theory proposes cognitive processes of constructing and manipulating spatially organized mental models, and (3) imagery theories postulate that such abilities are based on visual mental images. To explore the neural substrates of human deductive reasoning, we examined BOLD (blood oxygen level dependent) contrasts of twelve healthy participants during relational and conditional reasoning with whole-brain functional magnetic reso

Dual-energy subtraction mammography.

Dual-energy subtraction mammography was performed for breast examinations. To obtain a dual-energy subtraction image with a digital radiography unit, high- and low-energy images were obtained at an appropriate time interval under different x-ray exposure conditions. In about 50% of the patients with breast cancer included in this study, we obtained better diagnostic accuracy with dual-energy subtraction images than with conventional mammography. In some cases of breast cancer, it is possible to diagnose intraductal spread of this lesion on the subtracted images. Furthermore, abnormal lesions c

Real-Time Global Longitudinal Strain During Echocardiography: A Deep Learning Platform for Improved Workflow.

BACKGROUND: Left ventricular (LV) global longitudinal strain (GLS) offers advantages over LV ejection fraction, including improved diagnostic sensitivity, reproducibility, and prognostic value. However, current semiautomatic analyses are time-consuming and operator dependent, impeding widespread adoption of GLS in routine clinical practice. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to assess the feasibility, precision, and time efficiency of GLS measurements using a deep learning (DL) platform that performs real-time GLS analysis during image acquisition and incorporates DL tools to support standardization, to ev
