Neuronal Mechanisms Underlying Face Recognition in Non-human Primates.

Humans and primates rely on visual face recognition for social interactions. Damage to specific brain areas causes prosopagnosia, a condition characterized by the inability to recognize familiar faces, indicating the presence of specialized brain areas for face processing. A breakthrough finding came from a non-human primate (NHP) study conducted in the early 2000s; it was the first to identify multiple face processing areas in the temporal lobe, termed face patches. Subsequent studies have demonstrated the unique role of each face patch in the structural analysis of faces. More recent studies

Symptom dimensions of resting-state electroencephalographic functional connectivity in autism.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social and communication deficits (SCDs), restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRBs) and fixated interests. Despite its prevalence, development of effective therapy for ASD is hindered by its symptomatic and neurophysiological heterogeneities. To comprehensively explore these heterogeneities, we developed a new analytical framework combining contrastive learning and sparse canonical correlation analysis that identifies symptom-linked resting-state electroencephalographic connectivity dimensions within 392 A

[Diaphragmatic dysfunction post-COVID-19 infection: report of two cases].

Following the global outbreak of COVID-19, many patients have suffered from multi-system complications and long-term sequelae caused by the virus. Diaphragm dysfunction is an obscure post-COVID-19 symptom. Although a few cases of diaphragm dysfunction caused by COVID-19 infection have been reported abroad, there are no relevant reports in China. Herein, we present two cases of patients with respiratory distress after COVID-19 infection. On admission, dynamic chest radiographs revealed diaphragm dysfunction in these patients. Further investigations including diaphragm ultrasound, neurophysiolog

Autosomal recessive cerebellar ataxias: a diagnostic classification approach according to ocular features.

Autosomal recessive cerebellar ataxias (ARCAs) are a heterogeneous group of neurodegenerative disorders affecting primarily the cerebellum and/or its afferent tracts, often accompanied by damage of other neurological or extra-neurological systems. Due to the overlap of clinical presentation among ARCAs and the variety of hereditary, acquired, and reversible etiologies that can determine cerebellar dysfunction, the differential diagnosis is challenging, but also urgent considering the ongoing development of promising target therapies. The examination of afferent and efferent visual system may p

Prefrontal-Amygdala Pathways for Object and Social Value Representation.

This special focus article was prepared to honor the memory of our National Institutes of Health colleague, friend, and mentor Leslie G. Ungerleider, who passed away in December 2020, and is based on a presentation given at a symposium held in her honor at the National Institutes of Health in September 2022. In this article, we describe an extension of Leslie Ungerleider's influential work on the object analyzer pathway in which the inferior temporal visual cortex interacts with the amygdala, and then discuss a broader role for the amygdala in stimulus-outcome associative learning in humans an

Advances in neuroscience research and big data's analysis on anxiety disorder.

Anxiety disorder is a complex disease with the influence of environmental and genetic factors and multimolecular participation, and it is also one of the most common mental disorders. The causes of disorders are not clear but may include a variety of social, psychological, and biological factors. Therefore, neither genetics, neurobiology, nor neuroimaging can independently explain the pathological mechanism. By searching the Web of Science databases, Derwent Innovation Patent database, ClinicalTrials.gov database, and Cortellis database, we analyze the current situation of papers, patents, cli

Hypnotic treatment improves sleep architecture and EEG disruptions and rescues memory deficits in a mouse model of fragile X syndrome.

Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is associated with disrupted cognition and sleep abnormalities. Sleep loss negatively impacts cognitive function, and one untested possibility is that disrupted cognition in FXS is exacerbated by abnormal sleep. We tested whether ML297, a hypnotic acting on G-protein-activated inward-rectifying potassium (GIRK) channels, could reverse sleep phenotypes and disrupted memory in Fmr1-/y mice. Fmr1-/y mice exhibit reduced non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep and fragmented NREM architecture, altered sleep electroencephalogram (EEG) oscillations, and reduced EEG coherence bet

Chronic Immune Sensory Polyradiculopathy (CISP): A Systematic Review of the Literature.

Chronic immune sensory polyradiculopathy (CISP) is a rare inflammatory immune disorder affecting the nervous system, primarily targeting the proximal sensory nerve roots. The condition was first described by Sinreich in 2004. We conducted a systematic review of CISP cases published on PubMed to identify common clinical presentations, along with neurophysiological, radiological, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), and other findings. Our review included a total of 22 patients from 8 articles. Many patients presented with gait difficulties and sensory ataxia and were found to have normal nerve conduction

Therapeutic role of Differential Target Multiplexed (DTM) spinal cord stimulation in painful diabetic neuropathy. Case report.

Diabetic peripheral polyneuropathy (DPN) is the most common cause for diabetic foot complications, including diabetic ulcers, Charcot arthropathy, and lower limb amputations. Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) is a safe and effective treatment used for pain reduction in neuropathic/nociceptive pain conditions; the most common stimulation modalities used for the management of painful diabetic neuropathy were conventional paresthesia-based and high-frequency SCS, which stimulate the A beta fibers in the dorsal column of the spinal cord. Differential Target Multiplexed (DTM) SCS is a novel paresthesia

Neurodevelopmental deficits and cell-type-specific transcriptomic perturbations in a mouse model of HNRNPU haploinsufficiency.

Heterozygous de novo loss-of-function mutations in the gene expression regulator HNRNPU cause an early-onset developmental and epileptic encephalopathy. To gain insight into pathological mechanisms and lay the potential groundwork for developing targeted therapies, we characterized the neurophysiologic and cell-type-specific transcriptomic consequences of a mouse model of HNRNPU haploinsufficiency. Heterozygous mutants demonstrated global developmental delay, impaired ultrasonic vocalizations, cognitive dysfunction and increased seizure susceptibility, thus modeling aspects of the human diseas

Electrically Evoked Auditory Brainstem Responses in Children Fitted with Hearing Aids Prior to Cochlear Implantation.

This study investigates the effect of hearing aid use on the peripheral auditory pathways in children with sensorineural hearing loss prior to cochlear implantation, as revealed by the electrically evoked auditory brainstem response (EABR). Forty children with hearing aids were recruited. Half of them had normal inner ear structures and the other half had inner ear malformations (IEMs). The EABR was evoked by electrically stimulating the round window niche (RWN) and round window membrane (RWM) during the cochlear implantation operation. The onset age of hearing aid use was significantly correl

Unexpected sounds inhibit the movement of the eyes during reading and letter scanning.

Novel sounds that unexpectedly deviate from a repetitive sound sequence are well known to cause distraction. Such unexpected sounds have also been shown to cause global motor inhibition, suggesting that they trigger a neurophysiological response aimed at stopping ongoing actions. Recently, evidence from eye movements has suggested that unexpected sounds also temporarily pause the movements of the eyes during reading, though it is unclear if this effect is due to inhibition of oculomotor planning or inhibition of language processes. Here, we sought to distinguish between these two possibilities

Research on Mental Workload of Deep-Sea Oceanauts Driving Operation Tasks from EEG Data.

A person's present mental state is closely associated with the frequency and temporal domain features of spontaneous electroencephalogram (EEG) impulses, which directly reflect neurophysiological signals of brain activity. EEG signals are employed in this study to measure the mental workload of drivers while they are operating a vehicle. A technique based on the quantum genetic algorithm (QGA) is suggested for improving the kernel function parameters of the multi-class support vector machine (MSVM). The performance of the algorithm based on the quantum genetic algorithm is found to be superior

Neuromuscular Weakness and Paralysis Produced by Snakebite Envenoming: Mechanisms and Proposed Standards for Clinical Assessment.

Respiratory and airway-protective muscle weakness caused by the blockade of neuromuscular transmission is a major cause of early mortality from snakebite envenoming (SBE). Once weakness is manifest, antivenom appears to be of limited effectiveness in improving neuromuscular function. Herein, we review the topic of venom-induced neuromuscular blockade and consider the utility of adopting clinical management methods originally developed for the safe use of neuromuscular blocking agents by anesthesiologists in operating rooms and critical care units. Failure to quantify neuromuscular weakness in

Investigation of Phase Shifts Using AUC Diagrams: Application to Differential Diagnosis of Parkinson's Disease and Essential Tremor.

This study was motivated by the well-known problem of the differential diagnosis of Parkinson's disease and essential tremor using the phase shift between the tremor signals in the antagonist muscles of patients. Different phase shifts are typical for different diseases; however, it remains unclear how this parameter can be used for clinical diagnosis. Neurophysiological papers have reported different estimations of the accuracy of this parameter, which varies from insufficient to 100%. To address this issue, we developed special types of area under the ROC curve (AUC) diagrams and used them t

Properties and hemispheric differences of theta oscillations in the human hippocampus.

The left and right primate hippocampi (LH and RH) are thought to support distinct functions, but little is known about differences between the hemispheres at the neuronal level. We recorded single-neuron and local field potentials from the human hippocampus in epilepsy patients implanted with depth electrodes. We detected theta-frequency bouts of oscillatory activity while patients performed a visual recognition memory task. Theta appeared in bouts of 3.16 cycles, with sawtooth-shaped oscillations that had a prolonged downswing period. Outside the seizure onset zone, the average frequency of t

Epilepsy in patients undergoing cardiac surgery with ExtraCorporeal Circulation: case series and description of a peculiar clinical phenotype.

BACKGROUND: Extracorporeal circulation (ECC) is now being increasingly used in critical care settings. Epileptic seizures are a recognized but under reported complication in patients receiving this care. Acute symptomatic post-operative seizures have been described, as well as remote seizure, mostly in the form of convulsive seizures. Epilepsy has also been reported, although with lower frequency and mainly with convulsive seizures, while different seizure semiology is rarely described. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case series of four patients developing epilepsy with homogeneous features f

Integrating biobehavioral information to predict mood disorder suicide risk.

The will to live and the ability to maintain one's well-being are crucial for survival. Yet, almost a million people die by suicide globally each year (Aleman and Denys, 2014), making premature deaths due to suicide a significant public health problem (Saxena et al., 2013). The expression of suicidal behaviors is a complex phenotype with documented biological, psychological, clinical, and sociocultural risk factors (Turecki et al., 2019). From a brain disease perspective, suicide is associated with neuroanatomical, neurophysiological, and neurochemical dysregulations of brain networks involved

Benign Peripheral Non-cranial Nerve Sheath Tumors of the Neck.

Benign peripheral non-cranial nerve sheath tumors are rare lesions, including both schwannomas and neurofibromas. These tumors arise from Schwann cells, and may originate from any peripheral, cranial, or autonomic nerve. Most of them are localized and sporadic but multifocal systemic forms can occur. Cervical sympathetic chain, brachial plexus, cervical plexus and spinal roots and nerves are the major nerve systems commonly affected. Dumbbell-shaped intra- and extradural tumors occur most commonly in the cervical spine, as well as purely extradural and paravertebral tumors. The management of t
