BACKGROUND: Prior studies have highlighted lower rates of reoperation if fixation of a displaced midshaft clavicle fracture is performed with dual plating (DP) compared with single plating (SP). Despite higher initial costs associated with the DP construct, the observed reduction in secondary surgeries compared with the SP construct may make it a more cost-effective treatment option. The objective of this study was to assess the cost-effectiveness of DP compared with SP in patients with operatively indicated displaced midshaft clavicle fractures.
METHODS: We developed a decision tree to model

INTRODUCTION: There is no uniform approach to the management of lateral clavicle fractures. Recent studies have investigated additive coracoclavicular (CC) augmentation as a treatment option; however, it is unclear whether it is superior to conventional locking plate osteosynthesis.
METHODS: We carried out a retrospective analysis of 40 patients with lateral clavicle fracture (Neer type IIb) who were treated between 2014 and 2017 with either a hybrid locking plate osteosynthesis/additive arthroscopy-assisted CC augmentation (HP) procedure or a locking plate osteosynthesis only (PO) approach t

In this study, topology optimized, patient specific osteosynthesis plates (TOPOS-implants) are evaluated for the mandibular reconstruction using fibula segments. These shape optimized implants are compared to a standard treatment with miniplates (thickness: 1.0 mm, titanium grade 4) in biomechanical testing using human cadaveric specimen. Mandible and fibula of 21 body donors were used. Geometrical models were created based on automated segmentation of CT-scans of all specimens. All reconstructions, including cutting guides for osteotomy as well as TOPOS-implants, were planned using a custom-m

The burden of periprosthetic distal femoral fractures is projected to increase accordingly with the increase in total knee arthroplasties (TKAs) performed globally in the future. Less invasive plating and intramedullary (IM) nailing techniques still seem to provide similar outcomes based on current literature. Double-plating and combination techniques may prove to be beneficial in the future pending further large-scale studies but currently have not demonstrated superiority over single plating and IM nailing based on current evidence. Distal femoral replacement may provide a useful option for

BACKGROUND: Acetabular fractures are caused by high energy injuries. The treatment aims to reconstruct the articular surface, restoring the anatomical structure. The surgical management of these fractures is difficult because it requires familiarity with the 3D anatomy of the pelvis. With the use of 3D printing technique for planning surgery, this limitation could be overcome.
HYPOTHESIS: Studies examining the use of 3D printing in pre-operative planning of acetabular fractures tend to agree on its usefulness.
METHODS: A systematic review of two electronic medical databases was performed by

The clavicle fractures are frequent, vascular injuries associated with closed fractures of clavicle are rare. The pseudoaneurysms of the subclavian artery constitute an exceptional complication. We report a case of a 40-year-old who presented an expanding hematoma of the right side of the neck after a road traffic accident. Radiography of the right shoulder showed a midclavicular fracture. An arterial doppler of vessels showed a circulating hematoma in the contact of the right subclavian artery with a correct distality flow. Computed tomographic angiogram of the chest confirmed the diagnosis o

Open reduction followed by internal fixation (ORIF) has been regarded as the most effective technique for surgical repair of zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fractures. However, the ideal internal fixation method to achieve stable reduction remains controversial. This research aims to assess and compare the stability of the 2- and 3-point screw-plate fixation methods using finite element method (FEM). Based on computed tomography (CT), the finite element models of 2-point (ZFS + IOR) and 3-point (ZFS + IOR + ZMB) fixation for isolated displaced ZMC fracture were reconstructed. The force of 12

PURPOSE: The use of plates for open reduction and internal fixation of mandibular fractures has become a widely accepted method in the past 3 decades. However, the anterior mandible is well suited to lag screw fixation owing to the thickness of its bony cortices. Hence, the purpose of the present study was to comparatively evaluate clinical outcomes of fixation using lag screws and miniplates in anterior mandibular fractures.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty patients reporting to the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery with noncomminuted anterior mandibular fractures were randomly divided

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the effect of intramedullary nail and locking plate in the treatment of proximal humerus fracture (PHF).
METHODS: China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Chinese Scientific Journals Database (VIP), Wan-fang database, Chinese Biomedicine Database (CBM), PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were searched until July 2018. The eligible references all show that the control group uses locking plates to treat PHF, while the experimental group uses intramedullary nails to do that. Two reviewers independently retrieved and extracted the data. Reviewer Ma

PURPOSE: To determine the accuracy of a distal-first open reduction internal plate fixation technique in achieving correction of volar tilt in dorsally angulated distal radius fractures.
METHODS: Twenty foam radius models were divided evenly into groups N (normal) and O (osteoporotic). Dorsally angulated extra-articular distal radius fractures were then created. Group O underwent further modification to simulate an osteoporotic model. After static pinning in various degrees of dorsal angulation, opaque fiducial markers were placed and fluoroscopy was used to measure prereduction volar tilt. A

We compared post-operative distal radius fracture (DRF) displacement after volar locking plate fixation using full-length unicortical and shorter-length distal locking screws. In this non-inferiority, retrospective cohort study, DRFs treated with volar locking plate fixation were evaluated on X-rays. In the full-length group, volar locking plate fixation was performed with full-length unicortical distal locking screws. In the shorter-length group, the distal locking screws were planned pre-operatively to be approximately 75% of the distal radius depth based on the lunate depth, and the same de

BACKGROUND: Hallux interphalangeal (IP) arthritis can occur after first metatarsophalangeal (MTP) arthrodesis. IP arthrodesis is a standard treatment, but in the setting of prior MTP surgery there will be increased stress on the IP joint. This may result in diminished potential for bone healing. This investigation assessed the outcomes of hallux IP arthrodesis after first MTP arthrodesis.
METHODS: Charts were retrospectively reviewed for patients who underwent interphalangeal arthrodesis between January 1, 2007, and April 3, 2017, and who had a minimum of 12 weeks of follow-up. We compared pa

BACKGROUND: Acromial stress fractures following reverse shoulder arthroplasty have been increasingly studied because of potential functional impairment caused by this complication. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare different plating techniques for a type III acromial fracture (also referred to as "scapular spine fracture") in a biomechanical setting with special regard to primary stability and modes of failure.
METHODS: Type III acromial fractures were simulated on 19 Sawbones scapulae and plated with either a lateral clavicular plate (LatCP), a locking compression plate (

We report the case of a 36-year old female patient injured in a fall from a horse. Radiological assessment showed closed comminuted fracture of the lower extremity of the left radius with extensive displacement (A & B). Initial management was based on open osteosynthesis with screwed anterior plate and nails (C) followed by functional rehabilitation. Patient's evolution was marked by the occurrence of secondary fracture of the extensor longus, clinically objectified by thumb extension deficit and confirmed by dynamic Ultrasound (D). The patient underwent surgery with exploration of the frayed

Hoffa fracture is a rare type of fracture confined to the coronal plane of the femoral condyle. High-energy is a common reason of Hoffa fracture, and low-energy trauma and iatrogenic injury can also cause Hoffa fracture in some cases. The commonly used classifications include Letenneur classification, CT classification, AO classification and modified AO classification. X-ray is the first choice to diagnose Hoffa fractures, fracture lines can be found. If the X-ray is negative, CT scan and MRI should be performed. Nondisplaced fractures can be managed conservatively with cast immobilization, ho
