Neuronal activation in the medulla oblongata during selective elicitation of the laryngeal adductor response.

Swallow and cough are complex motor patterns elicited by rapid and intense electrical stimulation of the internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (ISLN). The laryngeal adductor response (LAR) includes only a laryngeal response, is elicited by single stimuli to the ISLN, and is thought to represent the brain stem pathway involved in laryngospasm. To identify which regions in the medulla are activated during elicitation of the LAR alone, single electrical stimuli were presented once every 2 s to the ISLN. Two groups of five cats each were studied; an experimental group with unilateral ISL

Cutaneous field stimulation (CFS): a new powerful method to combat itch.

Scratching the skin, while instantly relieving itch, often aggravates itch over time due to skin injury. To relieve itch, without damaging the skin, a new technique termed cutaneous field stimulation (CFS) was developed and tested on 21 subjects. CFS uses a flexible plate with needle-like electrodes (n = 16) to electrically stimulate nerve fibres in the superficial skin. The electrodes were stimulated consecutively (4 Hz per electrode, pulse duration 1 ms, intensity 0.4-0.8 mA, 25 min). CFS resulted in a pricking and burning sensation that usually faded rather quickly. The burning sensation wa

Inhibitory effect of cilnidipine on vascular sympathetic neurotransmission and subsequent vasoconstriction in spontaneously hypertensive rats.

We reported previously that cilnidipine inhibited increases in blood pressure and plasma norepinephrine (NE) level in response to cold stress in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). In the present study, we investigated the effect of cilnidipine on sympathetic neurotransmission and subsequent vasoconstriction in SHRs. In pithed SHRs, electrical sympathetic nerve stimulation (ESNS) elevated blood pressure, and this pressor response was abolished by guanethidine. Cilnidipine at 10 micrograms/kg, i.v. and phentolamine at 1 mg/kg, i.v. suppressed the pressor response to ESNS by 28 +/- 6% and 67

Electrode polarity does not alter the initial ventricular activation sequence during pacing with extracardiac electrodes.

Ventricular epicardial mapping was performed in six closed-chest anesthetized dogs to investigate the cardiac electrical response to external pacing. A right thoracotomy was performed, complete AV block was produced by formaldehyde injected into the AV node and a sock electrode array, comprised of 127 unipolar electrodes, was placed over the ventricles. Isopotential and isochronal epicardial maps were generated by computer from the unipolar electrograms. Unipolar stimulation pulses were applied between pairs of different types of cutaneous (metal, carbon) and esophageal (metal) electrodes, and

The digastric reflex evoked by tooth-pulp stimulation in the cat and its modulation by stimuli applied to the limbs.

The digastric reflex evoked by electrical stimulation of tooth pulp in anaesthetized cats was studied together with the effects on this reflex of stimulating other parts of the body. The threshold for the digastric reflex generally lay in the range of stimulus intensities which would excite a large proportion of the pulpal afferent fibres which suggested that a large amount of central summation was required to evoke the reflex. During the course of 25/27 experiments, the threshold for the reflex increased. It was also found that repeated application of suprathreshold stimuli produced first an

The effects of amosulalol, a novel combined alpha- and beta-adrenoreceptor antagonist, on the rat isolated right ventricle and aorta.

The effect of amosulalol on the accumulation of radioactivity from [3H]-noradrenaline and on the subsequent spontaneous and nerve stimulation-evoked outflow of radioactivity have been investigated in the rat isolated right ventricle. In addition the effect of amosulalol on the contractions of the electrically-driven directly muscle stimulated rat right ventricle to isoprenaline and of the rat isolated aorta to phenylephrine and 5-hydroxytryptamine are reported. Amosulalol at 10(-6)M did not prevent the accumulation of radioactivity from a solution containing [3H]-noradrenaline. The spontaneous

Effects of thyrotropin on the thyroid cell membrane: hyperpolarization induced by hormone-receptor interaction.

Cultured thyroid cells accumulate the lipophilic cation triphenylmethylphosphonium, indicating that there is an electrical potential (interior negative) across the plasma membrane. Thyrotropin stimulates the uptake of the lipophilic cation 3-fold, and the proton conductor carbonylcyanide-m-chlorophenylhydrazone causes efflux of triphenylmethylphosphonium accumulated in the presence or absence of thyrotropin. The stimulatory effect of thyrotropin on triphenylmethylphosphonium accumulation is not mimicked by human chorionic gonadotropin, a glycoprotein hormone with a similar structure whose targ

Activation of peripheral delta opioid receptors eliminates cardiac electrical instability in a rat model of post-infarction cardiosclerosis via mitochondrial ATP-dependent K+ channels.

The effects of the selective delta-1 (delta(1)) opioid receptor agonist, DPDPE, and the selective delta(2) opioid receptor agonist, DSLET, have been studied on the ventricular fibrillation threshold (VFT) in rats with an experimental post-infarction cardiosclerosis (CS). It has been found that CS induced a significant decrease in VFT. This CS-induced decrease in VFT was significantly reversed by intravenous administration of DPDPE (0.1 mg/kg) 10 min before VFT measurement. On the contrary, intravenous injection of DSLET (0.5 mg/kg) exacerbated the CS-induced cardiac electrical instability. Pre

tES synchronization of slow oscillations in N3 sleep decreases brain electrical impedance: implications for improved brain waste clearance.

The age-related impairment of glial-lymph (glymphatic) mechanisms for brain waste clearance has been suspected as a causal factor in the accumulation of toxic metabolites, including amyloid beta and tau proteins in Alzheimer's Disease and alpha synuclein in Parkinson's Disease and Lewy Body Dementia. Because electrical current at low frequencies flows preferentially through extracellular space (ECS), measures of brain electrical impedance may track changes over time in ECS as a function of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) dynamics that are important to brain waste clearance in sleep. We applied a sin

Effectiveness of transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation for lower limb rehabilitation in spinal cord injury: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) results in devastating motor and sensory deficits below the level of injury. Transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) has emerged as a promising non-invasive neuromodulation technique for improving motor function in individuals with SCI. However, the effectiveness of tSCS for lower limb rehabilitation remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the effectiveness of tSCS for improving lower limb motor function, walking ability, spasticity, and functional independence in individuals with SCI. METHODS: We conducted a comprehensive search of Pub

The neuromodulation registry survey: A web-based survey to identify and describe characteristics of European medical patient registries for neuromodulation therapies in chronic pain treatment.

OBJECTIVES: This survey aims to identify and describe the characteristics of registries for neuromodulation implantations used to treat chronic pain in Europe. Neuromodulation therapies such as spinal cord stimulation (SCS) are employed to treat chronic pain through implantable medical devices. These therapies are considered effective and are part of standard care in many countries. Registries can provide valuable real-world data to complement randomized controlled clinical trials. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a web-based survey to gather information on registries monitoring neuromodul

Outcome measures for electric field modeling in tES and TMS: A systematic review and large-scale modeling study.

BACKGROUND: Electric field (E-field) modeling is a potent tool to estimate the amount of transcranial magnetic and electrical stimulation (TMS and tES, respectively) that reaches the cortex and to address the variable behavioral effects observed in the field. However, outcome measures used to quantify E-fields vary considerably and a thorough comparison is missing. OBJECTIVES: This two-part study aimed to examine the different outcome measures used to report on tES and TMS induced E-fields, including volume- and surface-level gray matter, region of interest (ROI), whole brain, geometrical, st

Transcutaneous vagal nerve stimulation modulates stress-induced plasma ghrelin levels: A double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous cervical vagus nerve stimulation (tcVNS) has emerged as a potential treatment strategy for patients with stress-related psychiatric disorders. Ghrelin is a hormone that has been postulated to be a biomarker of stress. While the mechanisms of action of tcVNS are unclear, we hypothesized that tcVNS reduces the levels of ghrelin in response to stress. METHODS: Using a randomized double-blind approach, we studied the effects of tcVNS on ghrelin levels in individuals with a history of exposure to traumatic stress. Participants received either sham (n = 29) or active tcVN

Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation towards Visually Induced Motion Sickness Reduction: A Pilot Study.

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is a novel neuromodulation application for vagal afferent stimulation. Owing to its non-invasive nature, taVNS is a potent therapeutic tool for a diverse array of diseases and disorders that ail us. Herein, we investigated taVNS-induced effects on neural activity of participants during visually induced motion sickness. 64-channel electroencephalography (EEG) recordings were obtained from 15 healthy participants in a randomized, within-subjects, cross-over design during sham and taVNS conditions. To assess motion sickness severity, we use

Robust Estimation of Respiratory Variability Uncovers Correlates of Limbic Brain Activity and Transcutaneous Cervical Vagus Nerve Stimulation in the Context of Traumatic Stress.

OBJECTIVE: Variations in respiration patterns are a characteristic response to distress due to underlying neurorespiratory couplings. Yet, no work to date has quantified respiration pattern variability (RPV) in the context of traumatic stress and studied its functional neural correlates - this analysis aims to address this gap. METHODS: Fifty human subjects with prior traumatic experiences (24 with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)) completed a ∼3-hr protocol involving personalized traumatic scripts and active/sham (double-blind) transcutaneous cervical vagus nerve stimulation (tcVNS). A two-week course of transcutaneous vagal nerve stimulation improves global sleep: Findings from a randomised trial in community-dwelling adults.

Short sleep duration and poor sleep quality are common in the general population. This study tested if a 2-week course of daily transcutaneous vagal nerve stimulation (tVNS) improves sleep in community-dwelling adults. Participants were n = 68 men and women aged 18-75 years randomised into four groups: early and sham tVNS and late and sham tVNS. Early groups underwent daily 4 h stimulation between Day 0 and 13, while late groups underwent daily 4 h stimulation between Day 14 and 28. tVNS was performed with transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) on the left tragus, and sham tVNS (co

Ear your heart: transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation on heart rate variability in healthy young participants.

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) stimulating the auricular branch of the vagus nerve along a well-defined neuroanatomical pathway, has promising therapeutic efficacy. Potentially, taVNS can modulate autonomic responses. Specifically, taVNS can induce more consistent parasympathetic activation and may lead to increased heart rate variability (HRV). However, the effects of taVNS on HRV remain inconclusive. Here, we investigated changes in HRV due to brief alteration periods of parasympathetic-vagal cardiac activity produced by taVNS on the cymba as opposed to

Feasibility of Spinal Cord Stimulation in Patients With Refractory Angina Pectoris and a Cardiac Implanted Electronic Device.

OBJECTIVES: Five to 10% of patients with stable coronary artery disease have refractory angina pectoris (RAP). These patients are restricted in performing daily activities due to angina pectoris. Spinal cord stimulation is a last resort treatment option. A number of this patient population also has an indication for a cardiac implanted electronic device (CIED) (pacemaker or implantable cardiac defibrillator). Manufacturers of spinal cord stimulators have stated a warning that interference can occur between the spinal cord stimulator and the CIED. Consequently, only a limited number of patients

Therapeutic applications of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation with potential for application in neurodevelopmental or other pediatric disorders.

Non-invasive transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) as a newly developed technique involves stimulating the cutaneous receptive field formed by the auricular branch of the vagus nerve in the outer ear, with resulting activation of vagal connections to central and peripheral nervous systems. Increasing evidence indicates that maladaptive neural plasticity may underlie the pathology of several pediatric neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders, such as autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, disruptive behavioral disorder and stress-related disor

The efficacy and safety of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation in patients with mild cognitive impairment: A double blinded randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: There are 9.9 million new cases of dementia in the world every year. Short-term conversion rate from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to dementia is between 20% and 40%, but long-term in 5-10 years ranges from 60% to 100%. It is particularly important to prevent or prolong the development of MCI into dementia. Both auriculotherapy and vagus nerve stimulation are effective on improving cognitive functions. However, there is no double blinded randomized clinical trial to support the effectiveness of transcutaneous electrical stimulation of auricular acupoints in patients with MCI. ME
