[Collodion baby: 32 new case reports].

A critical study of 69 cases of collodion baby observed between 1976 and 1984 is compared with the study conducted in 1976. These 69 cases are divided into 32 examined by the authors personally and 37 published in the literature. The total number of collodion babies is 267. A collodion baby is a high risk newborn who must be nursed in a specialized intensive care unit during the neonatal period. The vital prognosis has been improved by the prevention of metabolic disorders (dehydration with hypernatraemia) and of percutaneous intoxication with topical products, and by the early treatment of in

In vivo Confocal Laser Microscopy for monitoring of actinic keratosis treatment: a comparison with histopathologic assessment after treatment with topical 5% 5-fluorouracil.

BACKGROUND: Histological examination is the gold standard for actinic keratosis diagnosis; however, it is not always a feasible approach. Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) is a non-invasive technique that may be an alternative for monitoring actinic keratoses treatment response. Topical 5-fluorouracil is indicated for actinic keratosis multiple lesions and for field cancerization treatment. OBJECTIVES: To assess the RCM accuracy, sensibility and specificity for actinic keratosis, considering as a gold standard the histopathological examination; as well as to evaluate the efficacy of 5% 5-

Maternal smoking during pregnancy and the risk of childhood brain tumors: a meta-analysis of 6566 subjects from twelve epidemiological studies.

OBJECTIVE: Prior epidemiological studies suggest a possible association between maternal smoking during pregnancy and risk of childhood brain tumors. A meta-analysis was performed statistically pooling all available observational studies on this topic in order to evaluate this suspected association. METHODS: Using previously described methods, a protocol was developed for a meta-analysis examining the association between maternal smoking during pregnancy and subsequent development of primary brain tumors in their offspring. Literature search techniques, study inclusion criteria and statistica

Local atmospheric transport behaviors of representative radionuclides during the Fukushima accident: A 200-m-resolution cross-scale study from site to 20 km.

Modeling of local atmospheric radionuclide transport is essential for nuclear emergency response. However, very few studies of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant (FDNPP) accident have focused on this topic because of the complex meteorology and the cross-scale transport behaviors from the site to 20 km of the FDNPP. In this study, both the local meteorology and transport behaviors were investigated at high resolution (200 m) using ensembles of different meteorology and models. Four wind fields calculated from onsite observations and three regional-scale meteorological fields (i.e., the

Efficacy of pentavalent antimoniate intralesional infiltration therapy for cutaneous leishmaniasis: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The mainstays of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) treatment, in several world regions, are pentavalent antimony (Sbv) compounds administered parenterally, despite their recognized toxicity, which requires frequent laboratory monitoring and complicates their use in areas with scarce infrastructure. As result of these drawbacks, the WHO Expert Committee on leishmaniasis has expanded the recommendations for the use of local therapies, including Sbv intralesional infiltration (IL-Sbv), as CL therapy alternatives even in the New World. However, the efficacy of these approaches has never bee

Supporting adherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy and protected sex among people living with HIV/AIDS: the role of patient-provider communication in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

This exploratory study examined patient-provider communication dynamics regarding adherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) and protective sexual behavior among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). We conducted 20 direct observations of routine consultations between PLWHA and care providers in two large public health clinics providing free HIV medications and clinical care to PLWHA in the greater Rio de Janeiro area of Brazil. Immediately after these observations, 20 semistructured in-depth interviews were conducted with observation participants regarding their communication wi

Cardiovascular risk associated with glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists versus other conventional glucose-lowering drugs in patients with type-2 diabetes: protocol for a nationwide observational comparative study in routine care.

INTRODUCTION: Several cardiovascular outcome trials have been conducted to assess the cardiovascular safety and efficacy of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP1-RAs) on cardiorenal outcomes in patients with type-2 diabetes (T2D). However, the strict requirements of randomised controlled trials to avoid most confounding factors are at the expense of external validity. Using national real-world data, we aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of GLP-1RAs in association with metformin especially on cardiovascular events, hospitalisation for heart failure and all-cause death in comparison w

Risk of postoperative infectious complications from medical therapies in inflammatory bowel disease.

BACKGROUND: Medications used to treat inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have significantly improved patient outcomes and delayed time to surgery. However, some of these therapies are recognized to increase the general risk of infection and have an unclear impact on postoperative infection risk. OBJECTIVES: To assess the impact of perioperative IBD medications on the risk of postoperative infections within 30 days of surgery. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane IBD Group's Specialized Register (29 October 2019), MEDLINE (January 1966 to October 2019), Embase (January 1985 to October 2019)

Is there a risk of transfusion-transmissible infections after percutaneous needle treatments in blood donors? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The donor medical questionnaire identifies a blood donor's history of known blood safety risks. Current Australian, Canadian, European and USA legislation temporarily defers blood donors who received different percutaneous needle treatments (i.e. tattooing, acupuncture and piercing) from blood donation. This systematic review aimed to scientifically underpin these deferrals by identifying the best available evidence on the association between percutaneous needle treatments and the risk of transfusion-transmissible infections (TTIs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Studies fr

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement for stenotic bicuspid aortic valves: Systematic review and meta analyses of observational studies.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analyses of observational studies of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) for bicuspid aortic valve stenosis (BcAV). BACKGROUND: TAVR for BcAV stenosis has been associated with an increased incidence of paravalvular leaks, valve malposition, pacemaker placement and all-cause mortality. The conclusions drawn have been limited by small sample sizes. The use of TAVR for BcAV stenosis remains controversial. METHODS: We searched multiple databases from the inception of the databases through September 30, 2016 fo

Clinical outcomes associated with per-operative discontinuation of aspirin in patients with coronary artery disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative state is characterized by increased thrombotic risk by virtue of platelet activation. Whether aspirin ameliorates this risk in patients with established coronary artery disease undergoing cardiac or noncardiac surgery is unknown. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare the risk of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) and the risk of bleeding in patients with early (3-5 or more days before surgery) vs. late discontinuation(<3-5 days)/no discontinuation of aspirin. METHODS: Multiple databases were searched from inception of these databases until Ma

'You don't want to lose your ovaries because you think 'I might become a man". Women's perceptions of prophylactic surgery as a cancer risk management option.

This preliminary study provides insight into the meaning of prophylactic surgery as a risk management strategy for women who have a familial risk of breast or ovarian cancer. Data were collected during observations of genetic consultations and in semi-structured interviews with 41 women following their attendance at genetic counselling. The option of prophylactic surgery was raised in 29 consultations and discussed in 35 of the post-clinic interviews. Fifteen women said they would consider having an oophorectomy in the future and nine said they would consider having a mastectomy. The implicati
