Lumen formation during development of the rat submandibular gland.

This study utilized electron microscopy and enzyme histochemistry to examine the morphological steps associated with the formation of a lumen in the end-buds of the embryonic rat submandibular gland. Indium-111 tropolonate has recently been introduced as a new cell-labeling agent. It has the interesting property of labeling cells in plasma with high efficiency, and may therefore promote an improvement in viability of labeled cells. This paper describes our initial experience with In-111 tropolonate as a leukocyte label for abscess imaging. A quantitative immunohistochemical study of IgA-containing plasma cells in the human uterine cervix has shown that the number of such cells increases during the late secretory phase of the menstrual cycle but decreases in the early secretory phase of the cycle, in pregnancy, in cystic glandular hyperplasia of the endometrium and after the menopause. Villous adenoma of the colon and rectum: an ultrastructural study.

The villous component of nine colonic polyps (three pure villous adenoma and six mixed adenomatous and villous adenomas) was studied by light and electron microscopy. Immunofluorescent localization of thyroglobulin--autoantibody producing cells in various organs of obese strain (OS) chickens.

The Obese strain (OS) of White Leghorn chickens develops a spontaneous autoimmune thyroiditis with circulating thyroglobulin-autoantibodies (Tg-AAb) similar to human Hashimoto thyroiditis. The paper describes attempts to localize the site of Tg-AAb production in various organs of these animals using the immunofluorescence method. Tg-AAb producing plasma cells and germinal centers could be detected in the infiltrated thyroid glands but not in spleen, bone marrow, coecal tonsils, thymus, bursa of Fabricius and Harderian glands.

Cyanide and thiocyanate concentrations following sodium nitroprusside infusion in man.

Twenty-six patients, receiving an infusion of sodium nitroprusside (SNP) during surgery, had considerable increases in both red cell and plasma cyanide concentration, but only small changes in plasma thiocyanate concentration. There was a linear relationship between both plasma and RBC cyanide concentrations and the total dose of SNP. The expired cyanide concentration followed the changes in the plasma. We believe that the development of metabolic acidosis, and the recent fatalities involving SNP, are attributable to histotoxic hypoxia as a result of excessive plasma concentrations of cyanide.

Electron microscope autoradiography has been used to compare the fucose-containing glycoproteins of normal and psoriatic epidermis. Normal keratinocytes and uninvolved psoriatic cells have most of their fucose on the plasma membrane, whereas involved psoriatic cells retain more within the cytoplasm.
