BACKGROUND: Non small cell lung cancers (NSCLC) are rapidly proliferating tumours, which are characterized by the presence of extensive hypoxic components, especially in patients with advanced loco-regional disease. PURPOSE: To evaluate the influence of elective inguinal node radiation therapy (INRT) on locoregional control (LRC) in patients with early-stage T2N0 anal cancer treated conservatively with primary RT.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Between 1976 and 2008, 116 patients with T2 node-negative anal cancer were treated curatively with RT alone (n=48) or by combined chemoradiation therapy (CRT) (n=68) incorporating mitomycin C and 5-fluorouracil. "Negative selection" and "death by neglect" are governed by apoptotic processes occurring in the thymus that shape the repertoire of maturing T cells. We have previously developed an in vitro model that recapitulates "death by neglect": Co-cultivation of double positive (DP) thymocytes or thymic lymphoma cells (PD1.6) with thymic epithelial cells (TEC) caused TcR-independent apoptosis of the former. We further demonstrated that this apoptosis could be attenuated by aminoglutethimide, an inhibitor of steroid synthesis, suggesting a role of TEC-derived glucocorticoids (GC) in this death process.

Bladder-sparing radiotherapy with concurrent chemotherapy may be a reasonable alternative to cystectomy in patients with invasive bladder cancer. The purpose of this study was to determine the tolerance of combined treatment in elderly patients. In HeLa cells, RNA polymerase I (Pol I)-mediated transcription is severely inhibited soon after infection with poliovirus. We have developed a gel retardation assay to analyze DNA-protein complexes formed at the Pol I promoter.
