Scaffolds manufactured from biological materials promise better clinical functionality, providing that characteristic features are preserved. Collagen, a prominent biopolymer, is used extensively for tissue engineering applications, because its signature biological and physico-chemical properties are retained in in vitro preparations. We show here for the first time that the very properties that have established collagen as the leading natural biomaterial are lost when it is electro-spun into nano-fibres out of fluoroalcohols such as 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol or 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol.

Carbon-nitrogen (CN) nanofibers were synthesized in argon-nitrogen gas mixture at 75 MPa by high isostatic pressure (HIP) apparatus using a graphite resistive heater. The CN nanofibers were grown in random with the diameter of about 200 nm and the length over 5 microm. The intensity of accumulation and excretion of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) in right atrial myocytes of 1-day-old offspring born to female rats with streptozotocin-induced type 1 diabetes mellitus was studied using transmission electron microscopy and immunocytochemistry. The data indicate a reduced ANP content relative to the control group. No significant differences were found in the morphometric characteristics of the right atrium ultrastructure between the control and experimental groups.

Τargeted genetic sequencing in a 6-year-old with steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome and biopsy findings of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) revealed a novel COL4A3 pathogenic variant (p.Arg341His). Combined with electron microscopy findings of glomerular basement membrane abnormality, this led to a diagnosis of type IV collagen-related nephropathy. This case underscores the benefit of early genetic testing in presumed FSGS for prognosis and avoiding unnecessary immunosuppression in pediatric nephrotic syndrome.

Advances in electron cryo-microscopy (cryoEM) sample preparation, image detection, and computational algorithms have led to a number of recent structures that reveal a molecular mechanism of pore formation in atomic detail.

A simple electrochemical method has been proposed for the preparation of silver nanoparticles that can be used for the detection of cyanide. Both the electrochemical behavior and morphology of the Ag nanoparticles have been characterized in the presence of KCN or diethyl cyanophosphonate (DECP) as well as in alkaline media. These were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). DECP is a simulant of the chemical warfare agent tabun.

Immunotactoid glomerulopathy (ITG ) is a rare cause of nephrotic syndrome, occurring in approximately 0.1% of native kidney biopsies. We describe a 43-year-old woman who presented with a nephrotic syndrome. Renal biopsy revealed a membranous pattern of glomerular injury. In electron microscopy the subepithelial deposits were comprised of 40 nm wide tubular structures, confirming ITG . During follow-up the patient developed a remission of proteinuria with only supportive treatment.

Transmission electron microscopy (of ultrathin sections) was used to examine the biomass of lung tissue in the immunodeficiency minipigs experimentally infected with Pneumocystis carinii. The material was found to contain pneumocysts, bacteria, and coronaviruses. There was a clear coronavirus-pneumocyst structural relationship. The findings suggest the combined effect of microorganisms of different systematic groups on the development of a pathological process in the experimental infection etiologically determined by Pneumocystis carinii.

A 56-year-old woman presented with a right inguinal mass. Biopsy revealed multiple lymph nodes involved with papillary and gland-like structures extending into the surrounding fibroadipose tissue. There was no history of carcinoma or other malignancy. Ultrastructural findings included long microvilli, desmosomes, and tonofilament bundles, indicating metastatic malignant mesothelioma. Malignant mesothelioma only rarely presents as a lymph node metastasis, and electron microscopy is very useful in establishing this diagnosis.

Inflammatory pseudotumours are rare lesions that may appear in several organs, and sporadically in the bladder and the renal pelvis. Aetiology is unknown and they show a non-malignant behaviour although differential diagnosis with other neoplasia such as leiomyosarcoma and rabdomyosarcoma must be established. In order to evaluate melatonin implication in the regulating of its own secretory process by pinealocytes, we used morphometric techniques for transmission electron microscopy. In mice treated with 100 mg of melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxy-tryptamine) by daily subcutaneous injection, we observed a decrease in number and volumetric density of lysosomes. Our results showed that melatonin influences the secretory activity of pinealocytes and participates in a complex secretory regulating mechanism.

Helicobacter pylori-like organisms (HPLOs) were isolated from the gastric mucosa of two Sumatran tigers and identified by polymerase chain reaction analysis as Helicobacter acinonyx. At histological examination, both tigers revealed a chronic gastritis associated with HPLOs as demonstrated by immunolabelling and electron microscopy. This is the first isolation of H. acinonyx from tigers, in which, as previously reported in cheetahs, it may be a cause of gastritis.

We report the thirteenth case of primary leiomyosarcoma of the ureter, as well as a summary of previous cases. It is the first case reported to be studied by computer tomography and immunohistochemical procedure. Further evaluation included intravenous pyelogram, cystoscopy with retrograde pyelogram, cell block for cytology, and electron microscopy. Leiomyosarcoma is a very rare disease that is difficult to diagnose. It has a very poor 5-year disease-specific survival.

Cowden's syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant condition characterised by multiple hamartomas of the gastrointestinal tract and cancer of the breast and thyroid. We present a patient with multiple papillomatous lesions of the hard palate, facial papules, and a history of breast cancer and papillomas of the uterine cavity. We also report the results of light and electron microscopy of the palatal lesions and immunological studies of patient's T-lymphocyte function.

A case of acute myopathy was observed in the course of treatment of respiratory failure with mechanical ventilation combined with prolonged neuromuscular blockade and administration of corticosteroids. A muscle biopsy revealed degeneration of muscle fibres. Electron microscopy showed loss of thick filaments as well as nemaline rods, vacuoles and cytoplasmic bodies. The mitochondria were increased in number, many harbouring paracrystalline inclusions, which were hitherto unknown in this condition.
