Wide resection and reconstruction in a low resource area, cemented nail technique knee arthrodesis; a report of case and surgical technique.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Osteosarcomas are primary malignant bone tumors that are driven from bone-forming mesenchymal cells and account for nearly 20 % of primary bone tumors. CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old female presented with chief complaint of pain and swelling on her right knee for 6 months with history of trauma. Her knee mobility and ROM was limited due to pain and the mass. Physical examination revealed a 15 × 22 cm mass on distal part of right femur with visible dilated veins. There was normal distal motor, sensory functions. Imaging revealed distal femur mass with mixed lytic

Use of the Straight Retrograde Intramedullary Nail for Tibiotalocalcaneal Arthrodesis: A Single-Institution, Single-Surgeon, Single-Implant Retrospective Series.

BACKGROUND: The hindfoot fusion nail has become a popular implant for tibiotalocalcaneal (TTC) arthrodeses given its rigidity, ease of insertion, and potential for less invasive surgical approaches. The purpose of this study was to evaluate fusion and complication rates following the use of a straight, retrograde intramedullary nail for TTC arthrodeses, and the influence of diabetes and smoking on these results. METHODS: A review of patient cases performed by a single surgeon at a single institution was performed. Variables included age, comorbidities, smoking history, BMI, hemoglobin A1c, pr

Understanding Knowledge and Barriers Related to Hepatitis B for Vietnamese Nail Salon Workers in the City of Philadelphia and Some of Its Environs.

In the United States (U.S.), up to 2.2 million individuals have been chronically infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV). Many nail salon workers are at risk for HBV as they are coming from high-risk and traditionally underserved communities. To understand barriers and knowledge associated with HBV in the Vietnamese nail salon community, the Health Belief Model (HBM) was used to qualitatively assess the health needs for the prevention of HBV among Vietnamese nail salon workers in Philadelphia through focus groups and interviews (N = 19). Results revealed several themes that highlight barriers wi

Distraction Osteogenesis Technique for the Management of a Gustillo Type I Tibial Shaft Fracture Initially Managed with an Intramedullary Nail Device.

Fractures of the tibia shaft are the most common long bone fractures, especially in young male adults. Due to specific anatomical features, these fractures are more common than any other long-bone fracture. This is one of the main reasons they are associated with twice the incidences of deep infection compared with any other bone and can be combined with the presence of segmental bone defect. Many reconstruction techniques have been used to manage such cases, including Ilizarov technique, Masquelet technique, vascularized fibula transfer, and the monolateral external fixator. We present a case

Closure of the femoral medullary canal after retrograde nailing using an in-situ osteochondral autograft-Technical trick and a case series.

Retrograde intramedullary nailing (RIMN) is the favored over antegrade intramedullary nailing in fractures of the distal femur. It provides a longer working length and allows for multiple distal screw insertion and therefore a more stable construct. Concerns remain regarding the violation of the knee cartilage and the effect this has on knee function. Many studies have shown high incidence of knee pain with reports varying from 20 to 86%. We describe a novel technical trick aiming at partially restoring the knee cartilage of the operated side and decreasing the hemorrhage stemming from the med

Antegrade nailing in femoral shaft fracture patients - comparison of outcomes of isolated fractures, multiple fractures and severely injured patients.

INTRODUCTION: Femoral shaft fractures in adults are high-energy fractures typically accompanied by additional fractures of the upper and lower extremities and brain, thoracic, or abdominal injuries. Intramedullary nailing enables early ambulation with a few complications, but rates of non-union remain high. Therefore, we aimed to compare bone union after femoral shaft fractures in adults (20-65 years old) depending on the injury severity and presence of multiple fractures. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study retrospectively examined 178 patients (145 male and 33 female) who underwent intramedull

Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis and Scheduled Pretransplant Plasmapheresis: A Timely Diagnosis of Nail-Patella Syndrome Avoided More Futile Immunosuppression.

Focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is a histopathological pattern of injury. As such, it encompasses a wide variety of dissimilar entities with different pathophysiologic mechanisms. Although ultrastructural morphological characteristics can specifically diagnose certain diseases and genetic mutations can also be unravelled, this ideal situation is generally not available worldwide. In this respect, when proteinuria with or without nephrotic syndrome is encountered and FSGS is the histological lesion, patients start to be prescribed different regimes of immunosuppression, which shou
