Evidence-based lifestyle guidance can complement radiological protection - reducing radiation-related cancer risk through lifestyle modification.

Radiological protection primarily manages exposure, yet public concern often focuses on health outcomes after exposure has occurred. This can foster fatalistic interpretations that cancer risk becomes fixed once a dose is received, contributing to anxiety and impaired well-being. Here we argue that such fatalism is not warranted: cancer risk is inherently conditional and depends on multiple determinants operating over time. Building on contemporary concepts of multistage carcinogenesis, radiation can contribute to initiation and may also influence promotion/progression through tissue responses

The Gut Microbiome in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: Emerging Mechanisms and Therapeutic Potential.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder marked by progressive loss of motor neurons and a median survival of 2 to 3 years after symptom onset. Despite advances in genetics, particularly the identification of mutations in C9ORF72, SOD1, and TDP 43, substantial variability in disease onset and progression remains unexplained. Mounting evidence points to the gut microbiome as a potential modifier of ALS biology. Microbial communities within the intestine influence systemic and central immune responses, energy metabolism, and the bioavailability of nutrients and t

Canine distemper virus in sympatric carnivores of eastern Spain: A potential risk for reintroduction programs.

Canine distemper virus (CDV) is a highly infectious morbillivirus posing a significant threat to global carnivore biodiversity. While domestic dogs are primary reservoirs, CDV circulates among various free-ranging wildlife populations, suggesting complex maintenance mechanisms. We assessed CDV frequency of infection via RT-qPCR and serology in 106 free-ranging wild carnivores (families Canidae, Mustelidae, and Viverridae) collected opportunistically in the Valencian Community, Spain, between 2022 and 2025. A total of 212 tissue samples-comprising adult lung (n = 102) and brain (n = 104) tissue

What drives rural households to use antibiotics? Findings from a community-based study in rural blocks of Pune, India.

BACKGROUND: While antibiotics are essential, their misuse across human, animal and environmental sectors contributes significantly to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Antimicrobial stewardship programmes aim to address this, but their reach remains limited in rural settings. As social units, households play a critical role in shaping health behaviours, making their involvement vital in research. The objective of the current study was to identify system-wise use and determinants of antibiotic use in rural households. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in two randomly selected rural

Emerging mycoses: a neglected area of concern for global health.

BACKGROUND: One of the most neglected, yet rapidly developing, areas of concern in global health is the changing epidemiology of fungal infections. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this narrative review was to draw attention to the pressing need for both a better understanding of the ecological, environmental, and host-related mechanisms underlying these emerging phenomena as well as a greater awareness of the growing clinical and public health significance of fungal diseases. It also highlights the significance of equitable access to fungal diagnostics and antifungal treatments, as well as coordin

Hoof, Vaginal and Milk Microbiota Alterations in Dairy Cows with Foot Rot.

Foot rot is a major infectious cause of lameness in dairy cows and can severely compromise production performance and animal welfare. However, it remains unclear whether foot rot is accompanied by microbiota alterations beyond the hoof, particularly in the vagina and milk. We conducted a case-control study of 24 Holstein cows (12 with clinical foot rot and 12 healthy controls). Hoof swabs, milk, and vaginal swabs were collected and analyzed using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, alongside quantitative PCR. Microbial community composition differed between cows with foot rot and healthy contro

Diversity Patterns of Domestic Herbivore Viruses in China Reveal Transmission Dynamics with Disease Management Implications.

Domestic herbivores have complex interactions with humans and wildlife, playing important roles in zoonotic and epizootic disease emergence and transmission. Yet their viral diversity and cross-species transmission dynamics remain understudied. Through pan-viromic profiling of 10,225 swabs and 4,304 serum samples from 5,710 adult individuals across China's five major herbivore-rearing provinces, we prepare the domestic herbivore viromic catalog of China (DhCN-Virome) comprising 1,085,360 viral metagenomes, nearly capturing their family-level viral diversity while expanding by 2.3-fold global s

Microbial diversity: the essential foundation for life on our planet.

The biological basis of life on Earth is microbial diversity that ensures human health, agricultural productivity, ecological balance, and ecosystem functioning. Microorganisms enable ecosystem restoration through bioremediation, maintain soil fertility, support plant growth, manage vital biogeochemical cycles, and contribute to climate resilience. Precision probiotics, postbiotics, faecal microbiota transplantation, and personalized microbiome medicine are the examples of emerging microbiome-based therapies that offer promising therapeutic opportunities. In humans, the gut microbial community

Response and Plasticity of a Cleaning Mutualism Following Short Term Reductions in Habitat Availability.

Species interactions, facilitated by animal behaviour, drive global biodiversity, yet species interactions are being disrupted by environmental change across ecosystems. On coral reef ecosystems, cleaning mutualisms where a 'cleaner' species removes parasites from a 'client' species at dedicated cleaning 'stations' on live coral are directly impacted by ongoing declines in live coral due to environmental change. Using cleaning mutualisms as a model system, we hypothesised that reduced habitat availability will result in a decline in mutualism-associated behavioural expression. Through an in si

High Dietary Carbonyl Iron Reshapes the Gut Microbiome and Impairs Hepatic Insulin Sensitivity in a Time-Dependent Manner.

The gut microbiome is widely viewed as an important regulator of host metabolism and immunity. Loss of microbial diversity can lead to gut dysbiosis, which has been linked to cardiometabolic and inflammatory disorders. Iron is an important micronutrient for both host and microbes, but its excess is toxic. To investigate the impact of dietary iron on the intestinal microbiome and host metabolism, wild type mice on standard chow were switched at baseline to a high-iron diet, containing 2% carbonyl iron for 3 weeks. Other groups of mice were switched to the high-iron diet only during the final 3

First Report of Bergeyella zoohelcum Associated with Hemorrhagic Pneumonia in Forest Musk Deer (Moschus berezovskii): Evidence from Bacterial Culture, 16S rRNA Sequencing, and Metagenomic Analysis.

Hemorrhagic pneumonia is a severe and often fatal disease in captive forest musk deer (Moschus berezovskii), but the pathogen remains incompletely understood. Based on incomplete statistics, the estimated incidence in captive populations ranges from 20% to 80%, with the disease occurring mainly in autumn, winter, and early spring. The disease has an acute onset and rapid progression. Due to the species' strong stress response, affected animals rarely show behavioral changes, making early detection difficult. In this study, we investigated a mortality case presenting with oral bleeding and hema

Cochlear deafferentation impairs perception of acoustic onset cues in kainate-exposed budgerigars.

Synaptopathy is a common cochlear pathology involving damage, dysfunction, and loss of auditory-nerve synapses with sensory hair cells. Cochlear synaptopathy can occur following sound overexposure due to glutamate excitotoxicity. Synaptopathy is undetectable with the clinical audiogram and is widely hypothesized to cause "hidden hearing loss," i.e., impaired perception of speech and other complex sounds under challenging listening conditions. However, evidence that cochlear synaptopathy causes hidden hearing loss is mixed, and the specific aspects of auditory perception impacted by synaptopath

Molecular identification of zoonotic hookworms in environmentally collected canine fecal samples in Northern Philippines.

BACKGROUND: Hookworm infections remain an important public health and veterinary concern in tropical and subtropical regions, particularly in communities with close human-animal interactions and limited sanitation. Dogs are recognized as reservoirs of zoonotic hookworms, yet species-level infection data in endemic areas remain lacking because the widely utilized microscopic examination of stool samples cannot differentiate morphologically indistinguishable hookworm eggs. METHODS: Environmentally deposited canine fecal samples (n = 72) were collected from five barangays in Gonzaga, Cagayan, No

The role of microbiota in bovine tuberculosis: Characterizing bacterial communities across lungs, gut, and lymph nodes.

Animals with bovine tuberculosis (bTB) develop granulomatous lesions as part of a complex immune response to chronic antigenic stimulus involving innate and adaptive mechanisms; however, the association of the microbiota with the development of and susceptibility to bTB remains poorly understood. This study characterizes the bacterial communities at different body sites involved in the pathophysiology of bTB, highlighting the gut-lung axis and their association with disease. Lungs, gut, thoracic, and mesenteric lymph nodes samples were collected from 31 bovines from a single herd (n = 19 bTB;
