Squamoid eccrine ductal carcinoma.

Squamoid eccrine ductal carcinoma (SEDC) is an extremely rare cutaneous tumor of unknown etiology. We report the case of a 77-year-old man with a history of treated chronic lymphocytic leukemia along with numerous basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas who presented for evaluation of a 5-cm, stellate, sclerotic plaque on the left chest of approximately 2 years' duration and a suspicious 3-mm pink papule on the right nasal sidewall of 2 months' duration. Initial histology of both lesions revealed carcinoma with squamous and ductal differentiation that extended from the undersurface of the epid

Inhibiting the expression of spindle appendix cooled coil protein 1 can suppress tumor cell growth and metastasis and is associated with cancer immune cells in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Inhibiting the expression of spindle appendix cooled coil protein 1 (SPDL1) can slow down disease progression and is related to poor prognosis in patients with esophageal cancer. However, the specific roles and molecular mechanisms of SPDL1 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) have not been explored yet. The current study aimed to investigate the expression levels of SPDL1 in ESCC via transcriptome analysis using data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus databases. Moreover, the biological roles, molecular mechanisms, and protein networks involved in SPDL1 we

Effects of isoprenylcysteine carboxylmethyltransferase silencing on the migration and invasion of tongue squamous cell carcinoma.

OBJECTIVES: The effect of isoprenylcysteine carboxymethyltransferase (ICMT) silencing on the migration and invasion of tongue squamous cell carcinoma was investigated by constructing the small interfering RNA (siRNA) of ICMT. METHODS: Through liposomal transfection, siRNA was transfected into human tongue squamous cell carcinoma CAL-27 and SCC-4 cells (ICMT-siRNA group) with a negative control group (transfected with NC-siRNA) and a blank control group (transfected with a transfection reagent but not with siRNA). Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was performed to analyze the mR

The immune response at the tumor site in lung carcinoma.

The local immune response to lung cancer was investigated by histologic and immunologic means. Distinctive patterns of stromal cellular reaction, characteristic for different histologic types of lung carcinoma, were recognized. The amount of cellular infiltration was highest in squamous cell carcinomas and lowest or nonexistent in oat cell carcinomas. Within the various histologic categories the well-differentiated tumors appeared to be accompanied by more reactive cells than the poorly differentiated ones; there was no relation between tumor necrosis and cellular infiltration. The plasma cell

OSR1 suppresses oral squamous cell carcinoma proliferation and migration via the AXIN2/β-catenin pathway.

OBJECTIVES: The odd-skipped related transcription factor 1 (OSR1) gene exerts distinct regulatory effects on tumorigenesis and development in various cancer types. However, the precise role of OSR1 in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) remains to be elucidated. METHODS: GEPIA 2 and TCGA databases were utilized to analyze the OSR1 expression in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSC) patients and its impact on prognosis. Hematoxylin-eosin staining, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, western blotting, and RT-qPCR were employed to detect the OSR1 expression in OSCC tissues and cells

Comparison of CT, MRI, and F-18 FDG PET/CT for initial N-staging of oral squamous cell carcinoma: a cost-effectiveness analysis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Treatment of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is based on clinical exam, biopsy, and a precise imaging-based TNM-evaluation. A high sensitivity and specificity for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and F-18 FDG PET/CT are reported for N-staging. Nevertheless, staging of oral squamous cell carcinoma is most often based on computed tomography (CT) scans. This study aims to evaluate cost-effectiveness of MRI and PET/CT compared to standard of care imaging in initial staging of OSCC within the US Healthcare System. METHODS: A decision model was constructed using quality-

Changing trends in human papillomavirus-associated head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) continues to be a significant disease with varying rates of incidence and mortality worldwide. Numerous studies have demonstrated that human papillomavirus (HPV) is etiologically linked with a subset of HNSCC, independent of tobacco and alcohol use. This subset of tumor shows increased sensitivity to radiation therapy and association with better outcomes. The study aims to determine the HPV burden and trend among patients with HNSCC in the southern region of the United States over the past 10 years. Of 142 cases from 2000 to 2004, 18 (13%) were pos

Ectopic integrin β1 overproduction by squamous carcinoma cells contributes to immune evasion-associated metastasis.

Distant metastasis often predicts poor survival for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) patients. To identify potential targets for metastatic SCCs, we performed spatial profiling of SCC specimens from head and neck cancer patients to identify stage-associated markers. Laminin-binding integrins, normally restricted to basal keratinocytes, were enriched in Stage IV-A intratumoral regions vs Stage II/III SCCs, consistent with poor survival correlations of these integrins in TCGA. Due to the association of multiple laminin-binding integrins with poor prognosis, we assessed their collective impact on me
