Catastrophic thrombosis is a rare but frequently fatal event following complex cardiac surgery. Combined spinal-epidural anesthesia (CSE) is considered safe in lower limb surgeries. Protein C and S are vitamin K-dependent natural anticoagulants. They play a major role in hemostasis by degrading the activated factor V and factor VIII. Deficiencies of protein C and protein S are associated with increased risk of thrombotic events. The combined occurrence of protein C and S deficiency has been rarely reported. We report a 6-year-old boy with Budd-Chiari syndrome due to combined protein C and protein S deficiency. He was managed with low molecular weight heparin and discharged on long-term warfarin therapy.

BACKGROUND: Pneumococcal meningitis in adults is widely associated with intracranial complications, which occur in up to 74.7% of the patients.
METHOD: Case report.
RESULTS: We report the case of a 40-year-old white female with pneumococcal meningitis after a sinus surgery, who developed a concomitant cerebral venous thrombosis and multiple cervical artery dissections. Following treatment with antibiotics and intravenous heparin, she had complete neurological recovery.

A 22-year-old man sustained a strangulation-type injury to the neck, with bilateral blunt carotid artery injuries detected on computed tomography (CT) angiography. His Glasgow Coma Score was 15/15, and he was managed conservatively with therapeutic low-molecular-weight heparin and antiplatelet therapy. Veno-occlusive disease (VOD) is a common and high-risk complication of allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT). Defibrotide has recently been used successfully to treat the disorder. We report on 58 patients who received defibrotide prophylaxis without concurrent heparin. No patients fulfilled the Baltimore criteria for VOD or died of the condition within 100 days of SCT. BACKGROUND: Hypoplasminogenemia is a rare condition that is associated with ligneous conjunctivitis, a form of chronic conjunctivitis characterized by firm, fibrin-rich, pseudomembranous lesions on the tarsal conjunctivae and oral lesions. Pseudomembranes may develop on the gingivae, and there may be periodontal involvement.
METHODS: Several therapeutic approaches have been developed to treat such patients, but they have had limited effect. We used gingivectomies, topical heparin, and corticosteroids to treat periodontal lesions in an 18-year-old girl.

The authors describe a case of DVT during pregnancy in a 41-year-old woman who had a normal haemocoagulative picture during pregnancy and in puerperium (PT, PTT, S protein, C protein, ATIII, xdp and fibrinogenous). All the haemocoagulative dosages were within the norm and compatible with the gestation period. Both homocysteine and antiphospholipid antibodies (mostly in puerperium) were always within normal limits. The authors believe that DVT occurs infrequently but it is also unforeseeable. Systematic heparin prophylaxis for seven to ten days, ante- and postpartum, can prevent this problem.
