Duration of Breastfeeding and Early Growth: A Systematic Review of Current Evidence.

Introduction: Growth patterns of breastfed and formula-fed infants differ, but the influence of breastfeeding duration on early growth remains unclear. The objective of this study is to evaluate current evidence on the association of exclusive and partial breastfeeding duration with different growth parameters during infancy. Materials and Methods: In this systematic review, we searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, and additional sources from January 2011 until March 2018 to identify relevant cohort studies and randomized controlled trials (RCTs). Results: Twenty studies that recruited infants from the ge

Insulin resistance is associated with hirsutism in unselected reproductive-aged women.

OBJECTIVE: Hirsutism affects 5%-10% of reproductive-aged women worldwide and exhibits clinical importance as a cutaneous manifestation of underlying hyperandrogenism. Racial and genetic factors play roles in manifestation of hirsutism, and the prevalence of hirsutism seems to be low in East Asians. However, the reference value of the modified Ferriman-Gallwey (mFG) score to diagnose hirsutism and the prevalence of hirsutism have not been determined in Korean populations to date. We aimed to investigate the distribution of the mFG score and establish its reference value for defining hirsutism a

Prevalence of disordered eating and pathogenic weight control behaviors among male collegiate athletes.

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of disordered eating and pathogenic weight control behaviors in male collegiate athletes. Male collegiate athletes (N = 732) from the across the U.S. completed questionnaires online. Results suggested that (a) most eating disturbances occur at the subclinical level, (b) exercising and dieting were the most commonly used weight control practices, and (c) athletes who participate in weight class sports are more likely to be classified as symptomatic and engage in pathogenic eating and weight control behaviors compared to endurance sport or ba

The feet of overweight and obese young children: are they flat or fat?

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether the flat feet displayed by young obese and overweight children are attributable to the presence of a thicker midfoot plantar fat pad or a lowering of the longitudinal arch relative to that in non-overweight children. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Foot anthropometry, an arch index derived from plantar footprints, and midfoot plantar fat pad thickness measured by ultrasound were obtained for 19 overweight/obese preschool children (mean age, 4.3 +/- 0.9 years; mean height, 1.07 +/- 0.1 m; mean BMI, 18.6 +/- 1.2 kg/m(2)) and 19 non-

Plasma leptin levels in children with cyanotic and acyanotic congenital heart disease and correlations with growth parameters.

BACKGROUND: Leptin has been shown to be an integral component of energy homeostasis and regulation of body weight. Leptin regulates adipose tissue mass and correlates with the fat mass, however the circulating levels are altered by energy intake. Research on the physiological function of leptin has primarily focused on its role in the pathogenesis of obesity. However, its role in the negative energy imbalance is unclear. Increased energy expenditure is a primary factor in the reduced growth in infants with cyanotic congenital heart disease. The objective of this study was to examine the possib…

Binge eating disorder: a need for additional diagnostic criteria.

This study compares the core and associated features of binge eating disorder (BED) and bulimia nervosa (BN). One hundred twenty-nine adult females who were obese with BED (n = 51) or non-obese with BED (n = 32) or who had BN (n = 46) were compared using the Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q). The BED groups were older and had a higher body mass index (BMI). The 3 groups were similar in binge frequency, but BN subjects (by definition) purged regularly. The groups differed by dietary restraint, even after controlling for BMI and age, such that the BN group had significantly highe

Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate, cholesterol, hemoglobin, and anthropometric measures related to growth in male adolescents.

Sixty-four white boys between 10.6 and 14.3 years old participated in an adolescent nutrition assessment study evaluating dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) as a measure of maturation. DHEAS, an adrenal androgen, is low in childhood and rises with the development of secondary sexual characteristics. Biochemical measures included plasma DHEAS assessed by radioimmunoassay, cholesterol assessed by an enzymatic method, and hemoglobin assessed by the cyanmethemoglobin method. Midarm muscle area (MAMA) was calculated from midarm circumference and triceps fatfold measurements. DHEAS was correlate
