Widespread and interrelated gray matter reductions in child sexual offenders with and without pedophilia: Evidence from a multivariate structural MRI study.

AIM: To further investigate the neuroanatomical correlates of child sexual offending and disentangle them from the neural correlates of pedo … offender groups relative to controls, comprising extensive clusters in the bilateral cerebellum and frontal lobe, as well as smaller clusters in the bilateral parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes, the bilateral basal ganglia, the medial cingulate and the hippocampus. CONCLUSION: Our results speak to the interpretation that there are inter- and possibly con …

Awake Craniotomy for Resection of Left Temporal Cavernoma: 3-Dimensional Operative Video.

Cavernomas presenting with seizures refractory to medical treatment may require surgical excision for seizure control. If superficial, they … localize the cavernoma following which a large craniotomy is performed exposing the temporal lobe, frontal lobe, and sylvian vein. Bipolar stimulation is used to localize speech with the patient awake until speech arrest occurs. The cavernoma is situated immediately inferior to the sulcus over which speech arrest occurs. The sulcus immediately above the caver …

[The effect of methylphenidate on appetite and weight].

OBJECTIVES: To better delineate in the medical literature the effect of methylphenidate on weight and appetite. METHODS: A search on PubMed was carried out for articles published with no restrictions on language or year of publication using the terms: "methylphenidate"; "weight"; "appetite". RESULTS: Methylphenidate increases dopamine and noradrenaline in synapses because of its blockage of the transporters of these monoamines in the frontal cortex and insular lobe. The intracerebral activity of methylphenidate is incriminated in the dysregulation of appetite due to its probable effect stimu

Cerebral amyloid angiopathy causing large contralateral hemorrhage during surgery for lobar hemorrhage: a case report.

We report a rare case of cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) causing large contralateral hemorrhage during surgery for lobar hemorrhage. A 62-year-old woman presented with lobar hemorrhage in the left frontal and parietal lobes recurring over the previous 1 month. Because we could not detect the origin of the lobar hemorrhage, we performed a biopsy around the lobar hemorrhage site with the removal of a hematoma. During the surgery, we identified acute brain swelling without bleeding from the operative field. Intraoperative computed tomography demonstrated new large lobar hemorrhage of the right

Brain and behavior in 48, XXYY syndrome.

The phenotype of 48, XXYY syndrome (referred to as XXYY) is associated with characteristic but variable developmental, cognitive, behavioral and physical abnormalities. To discern the neuroanatomical phenotype of the syndrome, we conducted quantitative and qualitative analyses on MRI brain scans from 25 males with XXYY and 92 age and SES matched typically developing XY males. Quantitatively, males in the XXYY group had smaller gray and white matter volumes of the frontal and temporal lobes. Conversely, both gray and white matter volumes of the parietal lobe as well as lateral ventricular volum

Association of dorsal inferior frontooccipital fasciculus fibers in the deep parietal lobe with both reading and writing processes: a brain mapping study.

Alexia and agraphia are disorders common to the left inferior parietal lobule, including the angular and supramarginal gyri. However, it is … ccipital fasciculus (IFOF) fibers in the deep parietal lobe that are responsible for connecting the frontal lobe to the superior parietal lobule. These findings are consistent with previous diffusion tensor imaging tractography and functional MRI studies, which suggest that the IFOF may play a role in the reading and writing processes. This is the first report …

Multiplanar transcranial ultrasound imaging: standards, landmarks and correlation with magnetic resonance imaging.

The purpose of this study was to define a standardized multiplanar approach for transcranial ultrasound (US) imaging of brain parenchyma based on matched data from 3-D US and 3-D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The potential and limitations of multiple insonation planes in transverse and coronal orientation were evaluated for the visualization of intracranial landmarks in 60 healthy individuals (18 to 83 years old, mean 41.4 years) with sufficient temporal bone windows. Landmarks regularly visualized even in moderate sonographic conditions with identification rates of >75% were mesencephalon

De novo presentation of an arteriovenous malformation. Case report and review of the literature.

The authors report the case of a patient with a de novo arteriovenous malformation (AVM), indicating that the origin of these lesions may not always be congenital. A 3-year-old girl who was struck by a car suffered a mild head injury and experienced posttraumatic epilepsy. The initial magnetic resonance (MR) image obtained in this child revealed only a small contusion in the left frontal lobe. Intractable epilepsy subsequently developed. A second MR image obtained almost 4 years after the injury demonstrated an AVM in the right posterior temporal lobe that was verified using angiography. The l…

A cholinergic explanation of dense amnesia.

Traditionally, dense amnesia in humans has been thought to be caused by damage to memory structures within the medial temporal lobe, either the hippocampus, the perirhinal cortex or a combination of the two. Recent work in animals has indicated that damage to the hippocampus results in memory impairments that are specific to memories for events. In contrast, damage to the perirhinal cortex impairs object memories in primates, which are likely to be analogous to human semantic memory. Discrete damage to either of these structures does not appear to result in severe and global memory impairments

The Protective Role of Aquaporin 4 (AQP4) in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy: Yes or No?

Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is the most common type of focal epilepsy in adults that resists the conventional anti-seizure medications (ASMs). The spontaneous epileptic seizures in TLE are initiated within one or both temporal lobes, resulting in memory impairment, mood disorders, and learning defects, and may induce the development of secondary generalized epilepsy. Furthermore, a brain water channel, aquaporin 4 (AQP4), is highly dysregulated in epilepsy. AQP4 is intricate in the regulation of neuronal excitability and the development of epileptogenesis and epilepsy. It has been shown that

[Cognitive Dysfunction of Pediatric Moyamoya Disease].

Moyamoya disease is rare and affects children and young adults. A substantial proportion of children with this disease experience cognitive dysfunction in some domains even in the absence of ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke. A characteristic feature is a decline in working memory, which is believed to be associated with reduced blood flow and disrupted microstructure in the frontal and parietal lobes. However, the involvement of the temporo-parietal-occipital lobes has also been reported. While successful bypass surgery can improve cognitive decline in some domains, especially the visual-motor p

Unveiling the Hidden Culprit of Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome Superimposing Postpartum Eclampsia: A Rare Case.

The rare yet potentially fatal neurological complication known as posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) can manifest during pregnancy. Alongside symptoms such as headaches, nausea, visual disturbances, and altered mental status, patients often experience seizures or loss of consciousness. Imaging typically reveals vascular edema affecting the parietal and occipital lobes within the subcortical region. We present the case of a 24-year-old patient who developed postpartum eclampsia followed by PRES. MRI findings demonstrated hyperintensities in the posterior parietal, frontal, and
