Comparison of HIV-related vulnerabilities between former child soldiers and children never abducted by the LRA in northern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Thousands of former child soldiers who were abducted during the prolonged conflict in northern Uganda have returned to their home communities. Programmes that facilitate their successful reintegration continue to face a number of challenges. Although there is increasing knowledge of the dynamics of HIV infection during conflict, far less is known about its prevalence and implications for population health in the post-conflict period. This study investigated the effects of abduction on the prevalence of HIV and HIV-risk behaviours among young people in Gulu District, northern Uganda

How foreign and domestic pressures on NGOs shape service provision for HIV in Tajikistan: a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are key to an effective HIV response due to their ability to reach hidden or marginalized populations that may avoid interactions with state-run clinics and services. Over the past decade in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) region, funding for HIV programming has decreased, constricting NGO operations. Concurrently, government regulation has increased, including laws that complicate how organizations receive international funding. This study explores how this changing environment impacts NGO survival and HIV-related service delivery i

Virological Remission in Two HIV-Infected Children After Early cART in Libreville, Gabon.

Introduction: Early antiretroviral therapy has a positive impact on the follow-up of an HIV-positive child, allowing assessment of the child's clinical and biological course. We report two cases to highlight the effects of early triple antiretroviral therapy (cART) on viral remission with seroreversion of HIV-infected infants in Gabon. Case Presentation: We present two cases of infants born to HIV-infected mothers in Libreville (Gabon). The first infant was referred to the "Center Hospitalier Universitaire Mère-Enfant" (CHUME FJE) with a positive PCR result. He was born to a mother living with

PTX3 gene polymorphism associated with cryptococcosis in HIV-uninfected Chinese patients.

BACKGROUND: For Chinese Han populations, cryptococcosis are more likely to occur in HIV-uninfected patients instead of HIV-infected patients compared with other countries and regions, implying that there may be genetic predisposing factors for cryptococcosis in the Chinese Han populations. However, the retail mechanism has not been clarified. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to conduct an association analysis between the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of pattern recognition receptors (PRR) genes and the susceptibility to cryptococcosis in HIV-uninfected Chinese patients, which may provide new gen

Induction of Identical IgG HIV-1 Envelope Epitope Recognition Patterns After Initial HIVIS-DNA/MVA-CMDR Immunization and a Late MVA-CMDR Boost.

In the RV144 trial, to date the only HIV-1 vaccine efficacy trial demonstrating a modestly reduced risk of HIV-1 acquisition, antibody responses toward the HIV Envelope protein (Env) variable (V) 2 and V3 regions were shown to be correlated with a reduced risk of infection. These potentially protective antibody responses, in parallel with the vaccine efficacy, however, waned quickly. Dissecting vaccine-induced IgG recognition of antigenic regions and their variants within the HIV-1 Env from different vaccine trials will aid in designing future HIV-1 immunogens and vaccination schedules. Barriers and Facilitators for Clinical Care Engagement Among HIV-Positive African American and Latino Men Who Have Sex with Men.

Achieving optimal health among people living with HIV (PLWH) requires linkage to clinical care upon diagnosis, followed by ongoing engagement in HIV clinical care. A disproportionate number of black/African American and Hispanic/Latino men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV do not, however, achieve ongoing care. We conducted semistructured interviews in 2014 with 84 urban black/African American and Hispanic/Latino MSM living with HIV to understand their barriers and facilitators to engagement. We classified men as care-engaged or not at the time of the interview, and conducted content

Improved darunavir genotypic mutation score predicting treatment response for patients infected with HIV-1 subtype B and non-subtype B receiving a salvage regimen.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to improve the prediction of the impact of HIV-1 protease mutations in different viral subtypes on virological response to darunavir. METHODS: Darunavir-containing treatment change episodes (TCEs) in patients previously failing PIs were selected from large European databases. HIV-1 subtype B-infected patients were used as the derivation dataset and HIV-1 non-B-infected patients were used as the validation dataset. The adjusted association of each mutation with week 8 HIV RNA change from baseline was analysed by linear regression. A prediction model

Large cell lymphoma: correlation of HIV status and prognosis with differentiation profiles assessed by immunophenotyping.

Diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) and plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) represent aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphomas, particularly in the setting of HIV infection. Since the introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), recent studies have documented improved survival outcome in patients with AIDS-related lymphomas. This study contributes a South African perspective by correlating the HIV status and prognosis of DLBCL and PBL with differentiation profiles assessed by immunophenotyping. Analysis of the morphologic, immunophenotypic and clinicopathologic features of 52 cases of DLBC

The dual pathway of professional attitude among health care workers serving HIV/AIDS patients and drug users.

The professional attitude of health care workers (HCWs) who serve HIV/AIDS patients and drug users is important in implementation of the harm reduction program (HRP). This study was to explore the causal relationships between education and training, AIDS-related knowledge, attitude of supporting methadone maintenance treatment (MMT), risk perception, and professional attitude of HCWs toward serving HIV/AIDS patients and drug users. We distributed a self-administered questionnaire to HCWs who have served HIV/AIDS patients and drug users due to work in Taoyuan, northern Taiwan. Structural equati

Obstacles to creating an environment conducive to HIV prevention for young people.

The external environment of an organisation influences the desired goals and interventions of that organisation in many ways. However, strategies for influencing the external context to create a more enabling environment for the interventions of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) are often inadequately addressed. This article draws on an empirical multiple-case study conducted in 2007/08 of four NGOs providing HIV-prevention services to young people in several low-resource, high-HIV-prevalence communities in Cape Town, South Africa. In an earlier study, young people reported that the extern

Does concomitant hiv infection has any epidemiological, clinical, immunopathological and therapeutic relevance in leprosy?

Co-infection with HIV-1 and M. Leprae is a rare event in endemic areas for leprosy and HIV, such as India. Neither an increased HIV prevalence among leprosy cases, nor any rapid progression to AIDS was observed among dual HIV-leprosy infections. The current situation concerning continued new leprosy case-detection and gradual increase in HIV infection in India and a few other developing countries, such as Brazil, emphasizes the importance of monitoring the occurrence of co-infections. There is so far no change in the clinical spectrum of leprosy, PB/MB ratio, leprosy reactions and neuritis amo
